Hi,

I am currently starting my own deli business and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good web designer/creator who could just create a basic but trendy site. Obviously prices need to be reasonable but as with everything I know you get what you pay for.

Thanks

Hey,

I actually work for a company called Global4 web design. We cater for all needs and have some of the best technical guys who can develop whatever site your looking for. Another thing is we actually hand over all administrative rights so you can update anything you like as and when you please but we are also there should you require anything more advanced.

As for prices, as you said it all depends on what you specifically want but we do a pay monthly scheme which is proving popular.

If you have anymore questions please contact me, Steve Roberts on 07704758817 and please feel free to check out our website www.global4webdesign.co.uk

I design sites but can't offer my services for this project - but can offer some tips to help you find someone who can:

- ask the designers what they know about SEO (search engine optimisation) and how sites they have deployed rank. They'll talk about meta tags and keywords if they know a bit about it. Then YOU search for them, as they will know the tricks to find their own sites. ;) This is key for a business site to be successful.

- Make sure it's accessible. For example, the rock site listed below uses images for the text, not actual text. This looks very cool but does not help the readability of the site on different screens or by visually impaired. For example, since the text is fixed (it's a picture) it can't be scaled up or down. This also affects the SEO. Fine for a band, not great for a business.

- Ask the designer if they use valid HTML. This means the site meets web standards and can be read on lots of different computers without errors. Yup, most people use IE but there's also Firefox, Opera, Konqueror, Safari users etc. to keep happy too! Lots views is lost business.

- buy your own domain name! Don't let anyone else own it if you can help it!

Hope that's useful to start with...

All very good points

However to ask those questions and be sure of the answers you would need to know what you are talking about as you ask the questions if you're not going to be fobbed off !

True!

Employ a good 'BS detector' and you'll figure out if you are getting honest answers.

Or post the answers here and I'll tell you yay or nay!

You'll find out that every man and his nephew know someone who 'designs' websites. How to choose is a whole different ballgame!

Regarding the 'valid code', get a URL off them, stick it in here:
http://validator.w3.org/
to find out if there's any errors.

Final tip:

If anyone recommends 'frames', run. :D Frames are like a scrolling window within another window. Templates are a much more elegant and workable solution. Frames are generally used as a bodge. I know, I used to use frames until I cracked php templates!

Good luck!
