View Full Version : Favourite Songs
Viper_GTSR 22-10-2004, 21:25 I'm curios to what kind of music people listen to, so in this thread post one of your fav songs and why, i think it should b quite good lol.
I like the new Kelis & Andre 3000 song, Millionaire, its got a good beat and the words make sense if you listen to them properly.
I also like the boogie pimps song, Somebody to love,( i know its a bit old(ish) but o well) that has a major part to do with the actual video, the one with the flying babies, and the woman aggggggghhhhhh.....
lol
Viper_GTSR 22-10-2004, 21:26 i ment curious sorry bout that people...
Don't know about fav songs (Anastacia's 'Left Outside Alone' is my fav for 2004), but I'm sick of all these rip-off songs. Yet another one has made it to the number one spot - Eric Prydz with 'Call On Me'. Oh, right, let's take a perfectly good song (in this case Steve Winwood's 'Valerie') rip off a portion of the chorus, add a predictable boring dance mix, and there you go, number one in the charts. And how the hell do they get away with renaming it? It's not 'Call On Me' it's bloody VALERIE. Isn't it about time this blatant plagiarising was stopped.
I heard somewhere that this song reached number one with the fewest sales ever for a No. 1 hit. Can't believe Stevie Winwood would alllow his music to be destroyed in this manner for the paltry royalties he'll receive from it.
Viper_GTSR 22-10-2004, 22:56 True, although you have to admit the video is quite, um, entertaining lol. But i agree with u, people change a few words and add a new beet and you have yourself a 'new' chart topper
WallBuilder 22-10-2004, 23:24 Only one? Stuff it I'm going to mention two.
Firstly , Paradise by the dashboard light by Meatloaf. I like this one as I can remember in the Wap the lads and lasses singing along to it with great emphasis. I used to play it in my car which I think my girlfriend found highly amusing as I used to tell her 'I'd heed it's warning'.
Secondly , 'The Timewarp' one of the few songs I actually know the steps of and even though I've now heard it hundreds of times I still bop around the house blasting it out whilst doing the housework.
Tee hee. Can't imagine you with a feather duster WB! Does it go with the biking boots? :suspect:
Viper, curious? the edit button at the bottom of the post will let you fix that.
WallBuilder 23-10-2004, 00:58 The frequency at which I do any housework usually means I have to use something slightly more substantial than a feather duster, that's why I always play my music loud to drown out the sound of the hammer and cold chisel for the thickening layers of fungoid matter on the work surfaces and to try and remove the black tide mark round the bath and let's not even talk about the loo, those congealed lumps of vomit stick so tightly to the pan walls.
Any girls out there like doing housework? I'll let you listen to any of my cd's.
Just one!?!?!??!!?!?! lol dam you viper for making me choose.
One of my favourite songs is a led zeppelin song (surprisingly) -'the rover'
It has a really strong solo and chorus riff that cheers me up every time I hear it.
recommend it for download
I also like a song by the fun loving criminals called 'scooby snacks'- great bassline and lyrics.
Viper_GTSR 23-10-2004, 09:21 cheerz for that Strix, keep it in mind for next time.
Well OK if you really cant choose just one then say a few but not your entire collection lol.
I dont know how many people will like this song but the new eminem song is quite funny if you listen to the words and watch the video, heres a link to the video just incase it helps ;)
http://www.musicbrigade.com/?movie=01JY10003714
enjoy!
My all-time favourite song is 'Daydream Believer' by The Monkees. Reminds me of great times I had in the 60's.
I'm going to have to cheat....
Neil Young's 'Like a Hurricane'
Manic Street Preachers 'Design for Life'
Pulp 'Common People'
Toad the Wet Sprocket 'Something's always wrong'
My favourite songs are very dependent upon my mood - those are the 4 I'd listen to right now!

The composer Philip Glass
What i find really sad are people who refuse to open themselves to the possibility that other types of music rather than the stuff they listen to in their club of choice, may have it's merits.
Unfair to name one, but UB40's Food for Thought always hits a chord (no pun intended)
Changed my mind – Steve Harley’s ‘Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)’ is DEFINITELY my favourite track.
It’s really weird but I always thought that the lyrics for ‘Food for Thought’ started with the verse ‘I’m a Prima Donna, Dancing in the Dark’. However, I’ve recently looked the lyrics up on the net and found that they are completely different to what I was expecting and are as follows:
Ivory madonna dying in the dust,
Waiting for the manna coming from the west.
Barren is her bosom, empty as her eyes,
Death a certain harvest scattered from the skies.
Skin and bones is creeping, doesn't know he's dead
Ancient eyes are peeping, from his infant head
Politician`s argue sharpening their knives
Drawing up their Bargains, trading baby lives.
Ivory madonna dying in the dust,
Waiting for the manna coming from the west.
Hear the bells are ringing, Christmas on it's way.
Hear the angels singing, what is that they say?
Eat and drink rejoicing, joy is here to stay.
Jesus son of Mary is born again today.
I’m not even sure that I know what they mean. Does Ali Campbell or whoever is the author of the lyrics know something we don’t?
P.S. Does anybody know anything about the story 'the mouse that roared'? It’s something that I have always intended to read, but somehow never seemed to find the time (though I must have read practically everything else under the sun, as I tend to spend an awful lot of time in bed just reading books). Is it possible that I might be suffering from depression or some related psychological health disorder? Sometimes I think I am going mad, and even thought that I could give up smoking simply by drinking cups of tea and chewing on a handkerchief (oh no, I bet your’e beginning to think I’m going mad too…). God I could really do with a fag right now, but have just thrown all my smoking material away…

That used to be my favourite song about 14 years ago, when she did it at Manchester Apollo (first proper gig I went to!). Even had the single (it came with Christmas postcards...)
Favourite songs at the moment are 'Pin' (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), 'Set You Free' (N-Trance, found a really good version the other day), 'Do You Know' (Angel City) and 'Forget About It' (Alison Krauss), though it changes daily!

The only 'Mouse that roared' I'm aware of is a film with Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford and David Kossoff(?). It's about this small European country called Grand Fenwick that declares war on the US in order to get defeated and then receive aid from the victorious US. (It's an old film...:) )
Quite amusing.
Joe
Thanks for that info Joe - quite enlightening!
Oh, btw I've changed my mind again (I’ve got a large and eclectic record collection!) – now I like ‘Reward’ by The Teardrop Explodes (Julian Cope’s old band). This if off ‘Kilimanjaro’, which is an excellent album (check out the tracks ‘Treason’ and ‘Poppies in the Field’ as rather good also).
A couple of funny coincidences here – the first band I saw live was The Teardrop Explodes (I was only 12 and was so excited that me and a couple of school friends were jumping up and down on the seats at the City Hall!). Also, my partner gave me a signed copy of Julian Cope’s ‘The Megalithic European’ for Christmas (she works in a bookshop, which is rather handy sometimes!). How cool is that? I was totally made up – managed to get one for my sister too, so she’s pretty happy too!

StarSparkle 13-04-2005, 12:02 I think I've just heard the most beautiful song ever - Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah". Exquisite beyond words - I can't stop listening to it.
It got me thinking about other songs that make your heart melt - you know, those songs that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, give you goosebumps, and are so perfect they just make you want to cry.
Some songs / parts of songs that to me are sublime, that are as close to perfection as is possible:
1. Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah"
2. Marion "Sparkle"
3. Only Ones "Another Girl, Another Planet" - especially the soaring guitar
4. Only Ones "Prisoners" - we helped each other over the wall, over the wall
5. Manics "Little Baby Nothing" - rock 'n roll is our Epiphany
6. Frankie Goes to Hollywood "The Power of Love" - I'll protect you from the hooded claw; keep the vampires from your door
7. Oasis "Don't Look Back in Anger" - don't look back in anger I heard you say - at least not today
8. Radiohead "Creep" - you're so f*****g special, I wish I was special
9. Smiths "There is a Light that never goes out" - And if a ten-ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side - well the pleasure and the privilege is mine
10. Pulp "I Spy" - I will take you from this sickness, dinner parties and champagne, I'll hold your body and make it sing again.
Sorry that went on a bit!
Anyone else want to list the songs that make their heart melt?
StarSparkle :)

Does the whole goose bump thing for me....
Everyone's Gotta Learn Sometime...The Korgis
I Fall Apart- Rory Gallagher
Like a cat that's playing with a ball of twine,
That you call my heart,
Oh but baby is it so hard,
To tell the two apart?
And so slowly you unwind me,
'Til I fall apart.
I'm only living for the hour,
That I see your face,
And when that happens,
I don't wanna be no other place,
'Til the end of time,
You'll be on my mind.
I don't mind,
Waiting for your love,
Borrowed time,
I've got plenty of,
Rain or shine,
Please bring out your love,
Make it shine,
Like the stars above.
I'm only living for the moment,
When I hear your voice,
Oh, I'm waiting,
I don't have any choice,
And the day is long,
So won't you come where you should be.
Like a cat that's playing with a ball of twine,
That you call my heart,
Babe, is it so hard,
To tell the two apart?
And so slowly you unwind it,
'Til I fall apart.

In a parked car
In a crowded street
You see your love
Made complete
Thread is ripping
The knot is slipping
Love is blindness
Love is clockworks
And cold steel
Fingers too numb to feel
Squeeze the handle
Blow out the candle
Love is blindness
Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my love
Blindness
A little death
Without mourning
No call
And no warning
Baby...a dangerous idea
That almost makes sense
Love is drowning
In a deep well
All the secrets
And no one to tell
Take the money
Honey
Blindness
Love is blindness
I don't want to see
Won't you wrap the night
Around me
Oh my love
Blindness

Mr Roger Sanchez ... Another Chance
There is a hymn we sing in church, "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind", the final verse always brigs a tear to my eye. The words are thus:
"Breathe through the heats of our desire
Thy coolness and thy balm;
Let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
Speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire,
O still small voice of calm!"
Another song which always moves me if I'm in the right mood is "Set You Free" by N-Trance.

I hate to be horrible but it could be looking at Annie's face that makes you cry, if you watch the video.. IMO she's not the best looking of ladies...
Cutglass 15-04-2005, 08:29 Hey LOL @ Rich, it's not her looks, it's her haunting, mellow voice that does it for me, but another bunch of stuff are the Bladerunners songs. It's one of my all time fave films and when I listen to the soundtrack, I just give in and start welling up.
