View Full Version : The Empire Bar
slimsid2000 22-10-2004, 14:00 What do people think of The Empire Bar (in Charter Sq.)?
I have been here a few times over the years but would be interested in hearing other peoples views of it.
Empire Bar is great coz of the cocktails!!!
richynomates 22-10-2004, 14:47 ...but they have the worst staff, service and attitudes in the whole of sheffield.
even with 20p cocktails, it wouldn't be a good night...
I agree that its got **** staff, but if the cocktails were 20p it would definately be worth it!!!
It used to be a great bar but as usual it's gione downhill and the place is becomming a chav's hideout since the start of the year. They do some fantastic cocktail jugs which is still a good enough reason to go in and is the only reason that's keep the place going.
I hear on the grapevine they're changing the cocktail menu very soon.
Yeah the only reason I still go (sometimes) is for the jugs!! The bouncers there are total w*****s!!
mimicraze 22-10-2004, 15:40 how cheap are we talking?
not reyt cheap really, a tenner a jug or twelve quid for a mega jug!! They are nice though!
Robbie Loving 22-10-2004, 19:39 plays good music,
used to be really full on fri and sats, but not so

didn't you leave?
I don't like Empire, underage haven, always extremely busy, not a pleasant atmosphere. Pretty much everything i dislike on a night out.

You say it is a chav's hideout. What exactly do you mean by this? Does it have a problem with violence or drugs for example. I have never much witnessed this but then I don't go that often and wouldn't necessarily know what to look out for unless it was really obvious.
I used to go there quite a lot and the cocktails are great but it is a complete chav hangout now. Also full of teenagers - the last time I went in I felt like the oldest person there, I reckon about 90% of people were underage. It's like a playground full of underage fashion victims!!
I'm afraid it's a NO for me also.

I've never seen any fights in there but they type of people that are fashion victims, plenty of Stone Island & Henry Lloyd jumpers about that only Popeye the sailor man would be seen wearing so it's becomning a Chav's & Spiceboy hideout.
The music too is mainly hip-hop & R'n'B they play in Empire whjere as before (when it was good) they played a wide variety of music.
Like it. Good music, good drinks, no problems with the people.
bean55788 26-10-2004, 22:25 empire is to small, bouncers need teaching some manners and they need a new air con system
slimsid2000 29-10-2004, 14:43 What other pre-club bars in the city centre or Ecclesall Road area do people prefer and why do you think they are better?
:help:
Carborundum 31-10-2004, 19:06 Empire is full of young townies - I would avoid it only been in once in 5 yrs
Carborundum 31-10-2004, 19:07 The Pomona on Eccy Rd is very good pre-club bar
Never been a massive fan of the Empire - I haven't been for years and have no pressing desire to ever return.
One time a drunken fool in a checked shirt threw up all over me in the gents toilet. However, he did shove a twenty sheet into my hand immediately afterwards.
I suppose there are rougher places, and, admittedly, I've enjoyed a lovely pair of jugs from there before now...

Why is it a better pub?
I have never (I don't think) been in there so have no personal experience of it. The only thing I know of it was that it was once in the news because someone was stabbed in there. However, this was years ago and could well be an isolated incident for all I know.
The Empire bar has quite a few pretty girls in it (and sadly a few not so pretty ones). Does the Pomona attract more or less nice girls than the Empire bar?
(This is a genuine question and would like to know).

mjlacey21 01-11-2004, 14:19 If the stabbing incident was the one in about 2000 I think it was outside the pub and not really anyhting to do with it. It's certainly not in the slightest bit rough. I don't think there's a whole lot between the Eccy road pubs, they all have a fair mix of students and locals. Have seen a lot more underage types in Empire though so if you pull, check the ID!

Thanks for the advice. I certainly wouldn't want an underage girl. Perhaps I am not that good at guessing ages but I have never seen anyone in there who I would have thought was under 16 . However, I could well be wrong, and this is certainly a consideration to take into account.
I'm not sure I understand the point about students and locals. Are one lot rougher than the other.
(BTW, I am both a student and a local)
mjlacey21 01-11-2004, 14:30 Currently at work I'm sat near a 16 year old who certainly looks older than my 22 year old baby face - beware!! Hope you have a a good night wherever you go.
the empire bar isn't on ecclesall road though.
I'd have said that the Devonshire Cat was a much nicer pre club venue. No underage drinkers that i've noticed, no townies, quite a few people on their way to corp later on, but they're all friendly.
mjlacey21 02-11-2004, 10:13 I didn't say the Empire was on Ecclesall, I meant that for pre-club bars if he was considering Pomana than most other bars on Ecclesall would be similar. Don't really feel that Devonshire Cat has the best atmosphere for a pre-club bar, well not for me anyway. It's nice for a drink after work or a quiet one though.
NatalieSheff 02-11-2004, 13:00 i have to say i hate this bar, and the door staff and the smell and the music and the people in there! no offence but its underage heaven and its soooo unclean, it needs a good revamp - i have heard this is happening in very near future, to make it appeal to early 20s. more like the matrix i think (which is ace)

no underage drinkers in dev cat??
its a haven for it, as you state, a pre bar for corp, which is FULL of underage drinkers
NatalieSheff 02-11-2004, 13:12 sorry i meant i hate the empire bar yuk yuk yuk
Carborundum 06-11-2004, 11:41 The Empire bar smells ?? what of ? is there a townie chav smell ?

Carborundum 07-11-2004, 10:01 All those "Morons" who organize the Brt awards ten ang give them out must be as wrong as this "moron" then - becasue they have scrapped the dance music categories because of lack of demand and the genre being out of fashion and replaced it with a live act award already - but then anyone who read newspapers would know that ...

Eh? Do they host the awards at Empire now?
slimsid2000 09-11-2004, 14:49 What do people think about the girls who go in there?
Some of them are quite pretty (although not all).
I have noticed that quite a lot of them seem to smoke which to me (although I am only speaking for myself) is a turn off.
What do other people think?
I am supprised to read in the star tonight about the Empire bar.Having its licence suspended.I not been in for a while but it was that bad.
