Where is a really nice traditional pub. I have a friend coming over fom peru, and would like to show him a old, nice traditional pub. One which feels like a nice country pub perhaps. Cheers!

The Grouse, Froggatt. Log fires, proper ales, proper food and you can take t'dog in. Tradition at its best. Cheers.

Bath hotel off west street is nice and cosy. Went in last year when it was snowing and it was almost Dickensien in it's quaintness.

The Strines or the Ladybower down the A61 are great for proper country pubs, although the Strines can be a tad steep.

Cricket Inn, Totley. Ded friendly, real ale, good food, restaurant separate, dogs allowed, cricket pitch (mebby not this time of year!), classic country pub, only just out of town.

Got to be the Brown Bear! Good ale at good prices, and I've seen a few dogs in there too ;)

I'll second that, Fabrice is a very pleasant and agreable landlord !
To avoid on the Sundays coz of them hikers, they take over, quite literally ;)

The Bath is ace. Red Deer acceptable (though I have suffered from dopey bar staff the last 3 times I've been in - obviously not employing maths students).
Try the 'Valley of Beer' - tram down to Shalesmoor - Cask & Cutler and then Gardeners, Kelham Island, Fat Cat all in the general area. Also Fagans on West Bar.

I like the Red Deer, Pitt Street (near West Street). Also the Crown Inn between Dore and Totley.

The best one to try is sheffieldpubs.fsnet.co.uk

they generally give a little pic and biog of each pub. As a traditional pub i don't think you can go far wrong witht the red deer or maybe the noahs ark at crookes is a very good one. Depeneds where you are. The red lion and rutland in town are also very good.

Would have to agree with this, and add the New Barrack Tavern and Hillsborough Hotel to the list as well, have the finest freshest beers around and really friendly staff and customers

It's great down there. I'm a (very) regular at the Hillsborough and, walking over from Longley, I often go down there. The only reason I didn't mention them is that they are very much 'inner city' pubs, not the requested country pubs. Still, well worth a look!

Fat Cat gets my vote every time.
Head over to Kelham Island Museum first to get the history of Sheffield, then give your Peruvian friend a pint of Pale Rider...

Sportsmans at Lodge Moor. Good ale and good pub grub up to 9.00 pm.... may be frequented by older clientele though. Good atmosphere.

Drive out towards Fox House via Totley/Owler Bar, then you come to a junction where you curve round to the right to Fox House. You turn left there and the Grouse is a short distance down there.

If you want something more in the city try the Red Deer, just off West Street, this is like a traditional country pub but in the city centre.

Another choice might be the White Lion at Heeley, they have maintained the old fashioned multi-room layout with wooden panelling etc.

Best 'proper' pub in town is the Dog and Partridge on Trippet Lane

I agree the Fat Cat is a good pub and Kelham Island brew good beers.

But why do I have a suspicion that Wicko Boy may be a little biased.....
