Lickszz 21-10-2004, 21:42 I suggest you try the market or perhaps the outdoor one on the moor. Btw, If a book about failures doesn't sell, is it a success? WallBuilder 21-10-2004, 21:44 Have a nosy round Hunters Bar and Sharrowvale there used to be some good ones in those areas pdoran 21-10-2004, 21:46 I havent seen any book shops on the Moor? Wallbuilder - any chance of being more specific, I dont really know that area very well. Lickszz 21-10-2004, 21:47 Not a shop, an outdoor market stall. pdoran 21-10-2004, 21:50 Originally posted by Lickszz Not a shop, an outdoor market stall. Ah right, I see. Where is the market? Excuse my ignorance! lol mr craig 21-10-2004, 21:51 Anything in particular your after??? You could always try the charity shops. Lickszz 21-10-2004, 21:51 In the middle of the Moor. It's only there certain days though as far as I'm aware. pdoran 21-10-2004, 21:53 Originally posted by mr craig Anything in particular your after??? You could always try the charity shops. I will check out the charity shops yes. Its mainly history books, we will be after. Does anyone know if the market is on this Saturday? ptigga 21-10-2004, 22:35 Originally posted by pdoran I will check out the charity shops yes. Its mainly history books, we will be after. Does anyone know if the market is on this Saturday? The second hand book stall is outside Yorkshire Bank at the bottom end of the moor (cross over the bus gate). He's there on Wednesdays and Saturdays and sometimes Fridays, but I haven't seen him for a while. If I see him tomorrow then I'll ask him if he'll be there on Saturday. He's got mostly fiction paperbacks. There's a couple of second hand book shops on West Street. One is between Mappin Street and the tram shop and the other is the Oxfam bookshop opposite the Swim Inn (which is brilliant). That's all I can think of at the moment. WallBuilder 21-10-2004, 23:06 My info may be a bit out of date but here goes. If you go along Ecclesall Road past the old Wards brewery you'll come to a big roundabout, that's Hunters Bar. Turn left and there are two roads there. One road is going uphill and there is a pelican crossing at the bottom literally yards from the roundabout. There is or was a decent bookshop there on the right, otherwise as you turn left at the roundabout there is another turning left immediately which is Sharrowvale. If you go along this road there are or were two second hand bookshops on the right about 100 yards apart. If you're after specific books though I've found the net is a good place to lok. kittykat 21-10-2004, 23:19 I get all my second hand books off www.abebooks.com OR the oxfams. They have some gems in the oxfam shops. Zebra 22-10-2004, 00:42 In my experience that bloke outside the Yorkshire Bank is a right stroppy old so and so. Unbelieveably rude for someone who works in his business. I've recently found that the Barnardo's near bottom of Moor has a new section at the back stuffed with books, many of them text books etc. Absolute BARGAIN! Oxfam is usually pretty great, just downt he side of Woolies on the Moor. A.B.Yaffle 22-10-2004, 00:59 There is a Help the Aged bookshop at Broomhill, which has quite a few history books (quite appropriately lol). metalman 22-10-2004, 10:17 I have to say I don't think I've bought a book from Oxfam for years, ever since they started charging the same prices as Harrods for everything. Walk into any Oxfam and you'll see they've got loads and loads of books... because they're all too expensive to buy. Many's the time I've seen books in Oxfam which are more expensive than the same book being remaindered in the Works or wherever. I can't help feeling they'd do better to price them cheaper and actually sell them and get the money, rather than have them sat on the shelves for months. Unfortunately all the other charity shops have now followed suit: they all have nice laminate flooring, and bookshelves full of nice new looking chick-lit. Trouble is, that's not really what I'm looking for in a charity shop: I'm looking for a load of old books, probably fairly tatty, at a low price. But now anything old gets funnelled off and somebody in a back room looks it up on abebooks and then either throws it away or sticks it on eBay at some extortionate price. I know charities will say that they have to maximise their profit for good causes and so on, but all it means for me is that the prospect of finding anything interesting in a charity shop has decreased to approximately nil. Consequently I would say that nowadays I do most of my book-buying at car boot sales, which in my view have taken over the role of charity shops in this respect. I know that doesn't help the original poster much because it's the wrong season now, and if you're after anything specific you have to look through piles of rubbish to find it, but that's just my twopennorth. ptigga 22-10-2004, 11:15 Originally posted by metalman [Rant about charity shops] I find the Oxfam on West street is much improved since they transformed from just another charity shop into a worthwhile second hand bookshop. As an example I recently picked up a good quality second hand paperback of "Day of the Triffids", a sci-fi classic, for £1.50. The same book (new) was £7 in Waterstones. I'm happy. I don't want tatty books in my collection. I want second hand books that have been well looked after by their previous owners. There are lots of charity shops in Sheffield where you can get yet another tatty Danielle Steel paperback for 50p. Oxfam adds value by having better quality stock, and I'm prepared to pay a bit more for it; especially as the money is all going to good causes anyway. Oh and there's another place which is absolutely heaving with Second hand books; but it's not for the claustrophobic. Lazy Days on Baber Road on the way up to Walkley. You'll need to ask either the eccentric old man, or the eccentric old woman and you'll be shown down to the basement is. The collection is astounding. metalman 22-10-2004, 13:07 To be fair to them, the Oxfam bookshop on West Street is by no means the worst when it comes to pricing (that dubious honour in my view goes to Oxfam in Broomhill). But I still reckon I could turn up a decent copy of Day of the Triffids for less than £1.50. The Shelter shop in Broomhill is a good example of what I was on about though. Not long ago they had quite a good selection of books both oldish and newish, and they were quite reasonably priced. So I used to buy the occasional one or two out of there most times I went in. Then all of a sudden the whole shop was painted a garish shade of red, the laminate flooring went down, and the bookshelves were refilled with only new-looking paperbacks whose price had increased dramatically. Result: I haven't found anything interesting in there since. I can only hope for their sake that other people have flocked there and bought lots of things. I have to agree with you about Lazy Days though - that's a great place! More like the sort of thing I mean! To get back to the original post: if you want a proper second hand bookshop (where things are sorted into categories), the only ones I can really think of in Sheffield now are Rare n Racy on Division Street, the Oxfam on West St., the Help the Aged in Broomhill, and possibly the Porter bookshop on Sharrowvale Road if it's still there. Going further afield, there is a really good one in Holmfirth, Scarthin Books at Cromford near Matlock, and also a very good one in Buxton. theflyingfish 22-10-2004, 13:11 Oxfam broomhill and Oxfam West Street, also help the aged broomhill, are all good for 2nd hand books. Also Rare and Racy at Devonshire Green is very good. The one on Sharrowvale Rd closed down this year. lectrolove 22-10-2004, 13:15 [QUOTE]Originally posted by WALLBUILDER [ There is or was a decent bookshop there on the right, otherwise as you turn left at the roundabout there is another turning left immediately which is Sharrowvale. Granma 22-10-2004, 15:04 PORTER BOOKS, 366 Sharrowvale Road, (other end from Hunter's Bar) are still there. Text & other books. Open Sun.- Sat. Granma wicko_boy 22-10-2004, 15:32 Rare and Racy on Devonshire Green I also recommend... PopT 27-10-2004, 22:02 You could try the charity shop halfway up King street just off Fitzalan square.
