View Full Version : Parkway accidents?
anyone know whats up with all the accidents on the parkway lately? tonight there was a huge ass accident that closed it off in both directions...
thats twice in two nights... means my folks taking forever to get home at night, whats the deal? they really should do something with the parkway other than random roadworks!!
There would be less accidents on it if they closed it! But that's just being silly
Brings us back to 'driving in Sheffield' from a couple of weeks back. Perhaps drivers using their mirrors and behaving less like demons behind the wheel is the answer.
Sheffield is the worst city I've ever driven in. I'd rather drive in Birmingham. You need your wits about you, but fellow road users are more considerate and AWAKE!
when did it happen? is it on any newspapers?? i wud like to know coz i have a personal interest in that road. any link wud be appreciated.

They imposed a 50mph speed limit which people don't stick to. Roadworks aren't to blame for accidents.

And what, pray, was a large beast of burden doing on the Parkway?
NatalieSheff 03-11-2004, 12:46 hate the parkway and the stupid airport. there are always works on there too. a friend of a friend had bad accident on there a few years ago on their way to gatecrasher from a different club. think some died bless them. there are too many accidents, we need more police about - cos i know just seeing a cop car slows me down
do you have any reason to believe that inappropriate speed is a cause of accidents on the parkway?
Maybe it's inappropriate panic breaking caused by speed cameras that is actually the culprit?
I came down the parkway at 9:30 last night and it was open then, what time was this accident? It was also open again this morning at 6:30 with no signs of an accident.

Well I ain't going into the whole speed cameras thing but if you are inappropriately panic braking for speed cameras then you were driving too fast in the first place and not paying attention which is just as stupid.
true. unless the speed limit is also inappropriate.
i just realised that the original post was from last month, so that explains why the parkway was open last night.
speed is not THE, nor even A, major cause of most accidents. According to the police and government statistics of course.

That is very true..but it is a main contribution. the governent statistic cover ALL roads. I would argue that speed is a major factor onthis type of road (dual carriageway) and it would be interesting to see a breakdown of stats to cover this...I stand corrected though if I am wrong.
Whether or not the speed limit set is appropriate (thats a whole other argument) the fact is not a lot of people stick to it and as you have rightly pointed out there is actually a lot of panic breaking when coming into Park Square roundabout.
The reason why I originally commented on the speed restrictions was because I recall an episode of Traffic Cops where one of the police drivers pulled someone over for speeding (70mph I think in the 50 zone) and informed the driver that the speed limit was set as a measure to help reduce accidents on the Parkway.
Just look at the comment above from Natalie. "I'll slow down if I see a police car"..why not just drive within the speed limt or slow down anyway. Its a reactive approach to driving which in my mind is the wrong way to go about it.
it's somewhere way down the list of causes of accidents.
It's a key factor in determining the severity of an accident, but inapproriate distance to the car infront, and driver inattention are the 2 highest causes i believe.

Very true.
I suppose its hard to determine the exact cause of an accident. You could almost argue that despite a driver not paying attention or driving to close to the car in front, had that driver been driving slower then the consequences of that accident would have been a lot less.
you could, but then you'd be focussing on the wrong thing really.
Focus on steps that will reduce the number of accidents, not steps that will reduce the severity of accidents.
So what would be some good steps to reduce accidents..for the purpose of staying on topic..how would you reduce accidents for the Parkway??
This is a genuine question by the way and not a sarcastic "so how would you smart arse" question. There seems to be a lot of harshness about at the moment and I would like to have a decent grown up discussion for a change.
it's a good question, and not one i have a magic answer too i'm afraid.
i suppose first we'd need to look at the exact location and circumstances of accidents in order to try to find some commonality between them.
it could be that in heavy traffic the speed limit is appropriate, in which case it could be looked at making it variable depending on conditions.
if there are common factors, such as a specific stretch of road, specific time, specific weather, density of traffic, type of car, type of driver, nature of accident. All or any of these would give us something to work with.
If it's a specific stretch then we could investigate what it is about that bit that makes it riskier or more dangerous than other bits...
it'd probably be rather interesting actually. but i'm sure the council just take the opportunity to stick up some more speed cameras.

Yes i knew all 3 of them who died in that crash, it was caused by them attempting to take the corner at 70mph in the rain, she was also an inexperienced driver.
The parkway should have GATSO camera's installed on it- thats the only way you will get people sticking to the limit on it, more police won't slow people down- it will just catch more motorist- therefore lining the pockets of the police even more.

So it wasnt the speed limit on the road which is what everyone has been saying. It was the fact that a person was driving at an inappropriate speed for their experience on that particular stretch of road and conditions.
the accident was around 5pm on monday im guessin.. because i was stuck at hackenthorpe for ages (5.30 - 6.30). traffic was not even moving. my mate cudunt turn onto a roundabout because they closed it off. havent heard what has happened since then. but its biggest back up of traffic ive seen around that area.

It was Lauren, Katie & Sam who lost their lives 2 and 1/2 years ago. The other guy in the car survived.
There is a candle and some flowers just after the Manor Park exit left in their memory. Ironically it was the "Welcome to Sheffield" sign that they crashed in to. A report following the accident, said it was placed in a bad spot.
Edit now I've read all the replies.
Scott> I left the club at about 3am that night because I had exams. It was raining horrendously. It was like driving through a river.
Yes, the driver of the car hadn't been driving very long :(
Apparenlty the Parkway becomes 50mph due to so many junctions. That's what was said on TRaffic Cops anyway.
bassplayer 04-11-2004, 07:43 Yeah, I remeber seeing a young lady and her partner at that site
early one morning and she was crying, it was really sad.
One thing to remember, a car cannot go fast by itself, its the drivers that do it. Its simple , just slow down!!!!!!!!!!!!!
where exactly was this particular accident then, it sounds like it was around the manor park exit on the way in towards town?
It doesn't sound like the speed limit had anything to do with it if they were speeding anyway, sounds more like the driver misjudging their or the cars abilities.

Jess-is this my sheffieldchick jess??) - yeah i remember that night- it was picotto 6hour wasn't it (btw its bladeclubber just in case you didn't know),
The official investigation said she was inconclusive - i just think they aquaplained or something as they went round that corner.
jessycar 04-11-2004, 10:11 I know it is :p It was the 6 hour, the last weekly too.
I thought they had decided the sign had been put in an inappropriate place?
Cyclone> it's just before the parking bay after the Manor Park exit and before you get to the Mecca Bingo site.
Yes, they split the blame between the council for putting it there and the driver saying that she shouldn't have been going so fast.
crap isn't it :(
jessycar 04-11-2004, 11:22 To be fair, people who have years of experience wouldn't have stood much chance taking the bend at 50mph which is what the road is.
I didn't actually know any of them but it still upsets me everytime I drive past :(
under the bad weather conditions you mean?
most traffic takes that corner at around 50 and in the dry it could be taken faster.

Most of the junctions have short acceleration lanes the 50mph speed limit makes sense.
jessycar 04-11-2004, 13:12 Cyclone> yeah, I got a taxi home from the club they were heading to about 3am and it was horrendous. It literally was throwing it down, it was awful weather. The taxi driver had the wipers on the faster setting and you could still barely see it was coming down that hard & heavy.
Common sense says you don't drive as fast when its chucking it down with rain.
