I made a start on knitting the Lake Park Hat (http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/lakepark/lphat.html) yesterday, and thought I'd share my experiences.

1. Knitting things larger than a sock is a pain in the bum on DPNs, especially when the needle diameter is over about 2.5 mm. Not sure why this should be the case, but it is.

2. I don't have nearly enough Addi Turbo circular needles.

3. It's knitting law that you will always have an Addi Turbo circular needle in your stash which is of the correct diameter but incorrect length for your needs.

4. Clover bamboo DPNs are worth their weight in gold.

5. Cheap bamboo DPNs are straight from Satan's bottom.

6. Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn is gorgeous; the colours are jewel-bright and the yarn itself is super-soft and stands up well to repeated frogging.

7. It's very dispiriting to have to frog Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn.

8. I seem to slip stitches knit-wise or purl-wise according to the whim of the moment.

9. Always make sure that when you start on a pattern that you've got the right side facing you (if that's what the pattern demands). The fact that it should be blindingly obvious due to the curly bit of stocking stitch forming the rolled hat brim is not necessarily the case at 2 am.

10. Alcohol and knitting is not necessarily a good combination.

Some really good tips there, thanks fot that! I'm sure most of it applies to any knitting of any sort!

I do like wooden dpn's, I have Clover ones and Brittany ones. I'm also waiting for a set of Knitpicks ones to go with the circular needle set I've already got.

I've never tried Cherry Tree Hill sock yarn, but it sounds like I might need to!

I don't drink alcohol when I knit, in fact, I don't drink alcohol at all, I haven't for 3 years! Not that I drank a great deal, but I got fed up with feeling rubbish after just one glass of wine or one can of whatever. I now drink water or tonic water if we go out!

My Friday night dilemma is whether I have a bottle of wine or knit. Unfortunately the wine usually wins. I did try doing both at once - it is never a good idea...I ended up with more knitting needle related injuries than you can imagine.

Have you got a long addi with the right diameter? If you have could you magic loop? If not forget what I just said:hihi:

Ive almost definitely decided that Im getting CTH solid in cherry for the sockathon:D

Dodgy stitches and the Magic Loop? :o Do you think I'm mad or what? :hihi: . Actually, I did think of that, but the one with the correct diameter is not long enough for the Magic Loop.

I've decided to knit it flat and seam afterwards. If I knit it again, I'll go for a circular though.

Almost definitely? The CTH is lovely though. Is that from Wooly Workshop? I've just been drooling over the Burgundy

Yes - it was a toss up between cherry and burgundy but I see these socks as more red than burgundy still:D
