View Full Version : Burnley school first to allow parents to view kids' lessons via webcam!
skyfitsboy 21-10-2004, 12:25 A Burnley primary school is to become one of the UK's first to let parents watch their children on the internet, what a fab idea!
The pupils' mothers and fathers have a special password to allow them to log on and watch their children.
The Sheffield-based firm behind the scheme, Teletoddler Ltd, said it gives parents piece of mind and protects teachers from unfair accusations.
Sharon Wignall, whose son attends Sunny Bank, said: "The idea of just being able to log on to a computer at any time and be able to see what your child is up to is fantastic.
"I know Ellis is safe and I know what a fun time he is having. I can also see if he is up to mischief!"
Head teacher Barbara Cross said: "As well as the obvious advantage to parents, this system allows me and my staff to show our pride in our teaching."
The password-protected area of the site is encrypted.
Internet servers at the school are protected by a firewall and high specification security software, which warns the head teacher of any suspicious behaviour.

That's a really cool idea. Especially if the kids aren't told the camera's there. Then they'll be truly in awe of their mother's telepathic powers when she tells him off at the end of the day for cheeking Teech in History.
Trouble is, it's only a matter of time before the wee ones find out,and a well-aimed inky gambo puts the cam out of action forever...
Great idea... Live video feeds of school kids...
Unbelievable! Have you people no sense of decency?
Can't see the point of this.
If teachers really do fear false accusations to such an extent that they are prepared to being watched for 8 hours a day whilst performing their jobs then we really are on a slippery slope and I think that they are in the wrong job.
Have cameras if you must but to have parents tuning in is a bit over the top.
What does it give parents peace of mind from. How many of us really believe that our kids are at risk from their teachers in the classroom?

Goodbye Mr Chips... and peas.
I think CCTV in schools is a good idea - for both teachers & pupils.
On the issue of whether parents can view it over the internet it just sounds a bit of a novelty.
Nomme
I was certainly glad CCTV was used in Columbine... It made Michael Moore's film far more interesting.

They might be paid. My mate Jamie's worst job ever (worse than hop-picking even, was his first in London. He applied for a post in Marketing, with good prospects. Being given the job, he was rather surprised to be handed a furry loin cloth and a plastic club. Hewas stationed thus attired outside a Leicester Square and instructed to shout his pitch of "Urrgghh, urrgghh!" at regular intervals, while brandishing his club a bit. Bizarrely enough, he noted that the new Flintstones movie was showing at the nearest multi-screen. He later got a job in the Ukraine, which was better.

Um, Harry Potter films DON'T suck.
Prisoner of Azkaban was great IMO, very dark and a little bit scary in places.
Of course they're good... As long as your initials are JK. It's media-bandwaggoning that's got those books to where theya re. The films have been nothing special, so much so that I fell asleep during the one with the Quidditch game.

Three Men and a Little Lady, how did they get away with that
fnkysknky 21-10-2004, 16:44 I think it's a disgraceful and badly thought idea - anyone with the password can just log in and watch kids at school. They'll be scared s***less of doing anything at all. Big brother is watching you and all that.
I don't agree with this either, as it infringes privacy IMO.
An interesting idea. Hopefully it can be used to weed out the trouble causers.
It is a complete infringement of the childrens and the teachers liberty.
Imagine the outrage if all our bosses wanted cameras on us while we are working.
I would love to see what my child is like at school, but part of school is growing up and gaining some independence from your parents - you should trust your child to tell you what is going on if they need to.
And I really pity the poor teachers who are probably going to recieve more criticism than praise from a bunch of parents who have never tried to teach a class of 30 kids!
