I noticed that the Esso fuel place on Chesterfield Road just opposite Derbyshire Lane has closed practically overnight - it's now all boarded up and already looking pretty derelict!

Does anybody know why it's closed or what the plans are for the land it's on?

Shocking .Imagine my horror last night when I went up there for some emergency fags after Swiggys shut.

Can we expect an apartment block in its place? Time to consider giving up smoking, Dick?

I think it's because my mate, who not only used to live on Binfield Road, but was also the most prolific dope smoker on earth has moved out...

He kept that place going with his regular sojourns for rizla, pringles, ginsters and the like.

One of the women who works there mentioned that the forecourt has been bought by another company. So there may still be a garage there in the future. Bit of a bummer having to travel to fill up.

Plenty of petrol stations have been closing down for the last few years, probably due to supermarkets introducing their own stations with lower prices. There are 2 on Ecclesall Rd that have been fenced off for at least a year and now look a complete mess....... the land they stand on must be worth a fortune, why is there no redevelopment?

Yikes,

I swear I saw it open as I drove down Chessy Rd last Saturday night back from work...
There goes the only shop open late...

First Esso in Millhouses, then Texaco in Beauchief...
How long will BP in Totley hold ?

Yeah, you have a Co-Op though that is a late shop - think it is on Ecclesall Road.

well, as i used to work for bp, totley will be closing in sept/oct 2005, according to my sources, as bp have sold off all thier sites, thats why the bp at meadowhead is now snax 24, and totley are looking for a buyer. the one at moonshine lane is now owned by the guy who i previously worked for at bramall lane, till they "ousted him", who, by the way , was a top bloke, i worked for him 5 yrs!!

The bp at Toley has already closed some three weeks ago, and word is that TESCO Express are moving in the site (after redevelopment). That should of course mean numbered days for the Spar which is vitually next door.

tab1 - I've heard the same story about the Totley garage. It's all closed down at the moment, but there's no sign saying 'for sale' or 'acquired by' or anything like that.

But folks living neraby are convinced it's gone to Tesco's.

The one at Beauchief has been converted into stone-clad apartments that are let out for a small fortune.

The one at Woodseats, just after the bottom entrance to Graves Park on Chesterfield Road, has also had flats built on it, although lost of them seem to be unfilled.

And I'm sure the one at Abbeydale, near Hastings Road, has been sold for the building of flats.

Don't be surprised to see fancy apartments constructed at the Chesterfield Road, called something like Heeley Heights, with estage agents' blurb going on about panoramic views over he city centre.

And the thing is, Chesterfield Road looks so seriously strange without it.

When I drive down there at night, it cries out: 'please, can I have my petrol station back?'

There has been a large number of petrol stations close in the last 12 months.

The main run into town from Ecclesfield used to have 6 to choose from - Ecclesfield Common, Cross Hill, Barnsley Road x 3, Netherthorpe Road. Now only 2 of those are left - Morrisons on Ecclesfield Common and the Shell on Netherthorpe Road.

Does anyone know what is being built here? Is it going to be more houses or something more useful??
