Hi,

My mum has asked me to ask you whether theres any health and hygiene courses out there for a small fee or for free. My mum has asked the council and initially told it was free and now she's found out that it's going to cost her £50 and that she's going to have to take 2 afternoons off work for this.

So are there any that would be better suited? She's taking this course because she wants to open up her own cake shop.

Thanks

I think the course is 'Food Safety'

Castle college have this course. It takes 1 full day on a Monday.
Give them a ring, they are very helpful. If they don't do a course they generally know someone who does.http://my.sheffcol.ac.uk/index.cfm?PID=3732A3CA-D3DA-4F34-B378-51818C41A6FF&cmd=Course&Course=BFH001

Found this link where they do on line courses from £17.50p

Thanks Expitlad! uve been great help! i was just wondering if u need a certificate if you've got a food technology GCSE because I'm thinking about setting up a cafe and I looked on that site and it basically teaches you the same things that I learnt in Food Technology. Should I still take it?

Anyone who works in the kitchen area/food preparation area must have the basic food hygiene certificate as a minimum.

You could ask the council. My feelings are it will be who issues the certificate that matters. It needs ( I think) to be a registered body, with regard to food safety. If you have the GCSE, you'll fly through. It might also be worth doing as there may be slight changes since you took the exam. I'm sure if you set up the business you'll be able to claim back some costs as legitimate expenses in setting up a business.Good luck with the café.

It is recommended that such a worker has a certificate, now called
The Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering.

The environmental health department of the council carry out this course, yes there is a small charge.

The course last 6 hours, but can be taught over 2 periods i.e. 3 hours one week 3 the next.

If you are setting up a catering business it is sensible to get the correct, free information from the environmental health dept before you start this can save a lot of grief and money in the long run.

Hi Guys

I was recommended to do this food hygiene course. I was told it's the best online one available, I did it and found it really easy. Took me about 2 hours and I received a certificate through the post 2 days later. Easy:

Go to www.food-certificate.co.uk and take a look for yourselves.

Hope you find this useful.

Amanda :hihi:
