View Full Version : An advance note for the next knitalong: socks?
Just a note in advance of a possibility for the next knitalong. LisaH suggested a knitalong for sock knitters using the Bayerische (http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2006/09/bayerische_sock_part_ii.html) sock pattern.
Do we have any takers?
If some folk don't fancy a sock knitalong, we could have two running at the same time if someone wants to suggest another pattern?
Oh God.
OK, I'll give at a go... :P
Count me in too. Got loads of yarn!
Can I make a start on the current one please ??? Hehe
I would have a go as I think they look really nice but I have never done socks on circulars before so I think I would have to have the time to devote to it. I will have to see at the time!
Nope, sorry, never knitted a sock in my life, and after thinking about it, want to leave it a little longer till I do.:( Would love to do another knit along though :D , so I'll have a think about a pattern, and look at what anyone else has to offer.
Glitter Star 08-03-2007, 16:55 What a fabulous idea! I love knitting socks and I was wanting to branch out with a pattern. It looks difficult but I will definitely give it a go. I love all things German, so the Bavarian pattern is a winner for me in every way! When will that start? Tomorrow?
...When will that start? Tomorrow?
Whoah there! . No, the next knitalong won't start til after everyone's finished the Branching Out knitalong, and there's been time for everyone to sign up to this one, buy their yarn etc :) .
Glitter Star 08-03-2007, 17:02 I'm afraid I'm just one of those knitters who loves starting new projects. Try as I may, I just can't curb my enthusiasm. Those socks will be the only thing I think and dream about now. I'm already wondering whether to go for one colour or to knit them with the patterned opal stuff. What do you think?

Oh I can relate to that entirely! I like to get stuck in quickly too, so I think I might knit something else (something small) once I've finished Branching Out and before starting the next knitalong. Having said that, at the rate I'm going I'll probably finish the Branching Out knitalong last  .
For the Bayerische pattern, I'd recommend using a plain yarn, or one with quite a subtle variegation. I think that the self-patterning Opal yarn would mask the lovely intricate cables.
I'm going to be using a plain yarn, though I'm not sure which I'll go for yet. I like the green in the pattern photo, though I've not made up my mind.

We could do Bayerische for those who feel up to the challenge and plain socks for those who have never done socks before?
EDIT: Oh yeah sorry forgot to say of course I will be up for a bit of Bayerische - um but I will undoubtedly be very slow:o
Glitter Star 08-03-2007, 17:11 I think you're probably right actually. The green in the photo is lovely but I seem to have knitted with a lot of green recently. Which yarns would work well because I would love to knit some cashmere socks and this might be a good choice of pattern. Any recommendations for suitable or luxurious yarns?

Two sock knitalongs sounds like an excellent idea to me  . It would be a good opportunity for new sock knitters to get into it, and for middling sock knitters like me to do something a bit more daunting.
Lucy-Lastic 08-03-2007, 17:13 I am still seeing these in red:D Not found a suitable red yet though. Trying to kick my green habit atm so green is out for me:thumbsup:

I like Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock (http://www.getknitted.com/acatalog/Shepherd_Sock___Solid_Colours.html). Posh Yarn (http://www.poshyarn.co.uk/shop.html) do a pure cashemere sock yarn, though you have to be quick when buying from there, as they seem to have changed how they sell their yarn (the stock page is updated once a week, and it's first come first served).
Wool4brains 08-03-2007, 17:22 I have made socks in pure cashmere and although they are soo soft they don't wear well. My mother went through hers in the first month and has been darning them regularly ever since. She says they are worth it because they are so soft, I wouldn't give them house room.
edited to add: As the Posh Yarns sock yarn is 70% merino it will wear much better, if you don't want to be continually darning then I'd look for something that wasn't 100% cashmere.

If you want a solid colour you can email Dee and she'll do a custom dye for you. it takes a few weeks normally, but ensures you get exactly what you want.
I don't think I've seen any of your knitting yet, Amelie. Are you going to join in? ;)

There are a couple of possibles in Lornas Laces - otherwise Im wondering about Rowan 4ply soft (I quite like honk 374) - or I might look to see whats available in Opal Uni - or Cygnet or something else entirely:hihi:

Posh Yarns also do a pure cashemere sock yarn, though I agree that although the socks would feel luxurious if you used that yarn (or any other pure cashmere) they wouldn't be at all hard-wearing.

I have some Opal uni, though I find it a bit harsh and scratchy.
The LL Cranberry or Manzanita are quite nice reds. The Chocolate shade looks good too.
I've got some Lorna's Laces in Aslam shade, got loads of other as well though.

Nope! I don't like KAL's, and put all my knittng up on my blog to be admired and loved by all my minions ;)
I started printing the pattern out for this earlier just because I had the printer on. Be careful, the pattern is in 2 parts and the first part is 16 pages long!!!! Most of them are comments, so you just need to print pages 1-4
Lucy-Lastic 11-03-2007, 20:23 Cheers for that. I had heard that we might need to copy bits and paste them into word (or another wordprocessor of course:wink:).

I was going to copy and paste the relevant bits into a Word document, and scan the comments for any useful ones with tips and the like and add those too. I haven't done a print preview of the page the pattern's on, but sometimes the formatting can be a real pain. For example, the Lake Park Hat pattern prints direct from the web page with a tiny font and huge frame margins.
EDIT: Just done a print preview and it doesn't look good in Firefox; images and bits of pattern all over the place.
I was using Safari on mine, haven't looked through Firefox
I think I will take part in this KAL. I've a bit on yet though. Could we start it sometime in April please so that my fingers can finish what I'm at now?
Does anybody know if Eunny has made a downloadable pattern yet. There are the start of the pattern on one page of her blog and then it goes on to the second part of her blog and I'm wary when it says "of course this pattern hasn't been test knitted yet"
But count me in in April.
Lucy-Lastic 12-03-2007, 10:37 I cant see a PDF yet but there are loads of Bayerische socks out in blogland so the 'pattern' must be ok:)
Turra, April will be fine for the next knitalong :) . After all, the 'official' start date of the Branching Out one was only a week ago (and I'm still stuck on 15 repeats ) .
Can we have something else along side the socks? I don't want to/can't do socks

Lisa has already suggested a plain sock knitalong to run at the same time as the more complicated Bayerische pattern. Do you not fancy learning how to knit socks?
If there are no takers for the plain sock knitalong, feel free to suggest another pattern to run in in the place of that one.

S'all right Wheez old bean. You and me can find something else to do - the idea of socks doesn't appeal to me either as its 1)small needles and fine yarn 2) you have to make 2 - exactly the same!
I think we've established that there's enough interest in the Bayerisch sock pattern for that to be the April knitalong, with the possibility of a plain sock knitalong for those who don't fancy the Bayerisch pattern.
Watch this space for the 'official' sock knitalong thread.
Closing.
