I would recommend giving it a try. I've just started an evening class in Farsi as so far I can only speak English, and I am enjoying it!
DO IT!!!
I did a few lessons of japanese when I was in 6th form, but I had too many other things to get done so I ended up quitting after about 3 weeks... which sucked cus I wanted to learn japanese :(
my girlfriend is currently doing a degree in japanese at Sheffield Uni... but hopefully they wont push you as hard as they have her... she's already expected to know 2 alphabets of around 90 characters and about 100 kanji words... and thats in just 3 weeks... lol
I've always been interested in Japanese culture and so learning Japanese was the next step. I took lessons for a while then had to drop out due to pressure of work and other 'stuff' that happened in my life.
I really enjoyed it - it was challenging but great fun.
I still have my interest in teh culture and history of Japan and will one day return to the language!

Don`t study anything if school will be boring without it.
You will soon get bored with the course if you are not interested.
Try and study something you are interested in.
Cheers,
Go for it mate

Glad to see that you are interested in Japan.
It may be challenging to learn Kanji characters. My daughter is bombarded by Kanji homework and tests under closer scrutiny by her mom everyday. It is tear-provoking scene.(Sometimes she really sobs.)
But I am sure that you can enjoy learning it in mom's absence.
;)
I echo those who say go for it. What have you got to lose?

I dont see why not its something to add to application forms/CVs in the future to make you stand out a bit more.
