And now for something a little less contraversial...

Anyone know where I can get a chess set around the city? Ive tried what I thought were the obvious places without result...I'm getting fed up with playing against my phone :P

WH Smith have always done a standard staunton wooden set half size with a folding board for as long as I remember.

if you look in the "pound" shops around The Moor, you can pick a chess set up extremely cheaply.

I do know that "poundzone" (down the side of Burtons on the Moor, past Oxfam) have a "megazone" section (slightly higher prices, but has a variety of goods (shop used to be a "BeWise") and, I think they have a glass chess set in their store for under about a fiver (I may be slightly out on price, but, meh, it is reasonable, anyway)

also "the works" (branches on The Moor and at Crystal Peaks) sell sets, and they are quite reasonably priced.

Are you just wanting any old chess set or one specially carved out of wood?

I always think that a hand made board can not be beaten.
I used to work with a guy that lives on Meadowhead and his hand made chess boards are the best i have ever seen. In fact the last time i saw him, he was making jewelery box's for Harrods.
I have had a quick look for his buisness card but can not find it i'm afraid.

I nearly always see chess sets when I go to car boot sales. A few weeks ago I bought a very nice glass chess and draughts set in perfect condition for £1, from the car boot sale off Bowshaw roundabout! :D
