Are there any Jazz clubs in Sheffield?
If there is, do many people go?
If not, should there be a market for jazz clubs?

Just curious what people think and i wouldnt mind going to one just to see what its like :)

Hey,

Try the One Eleven Club www.oneelevenclub.co.uk/ (http://www.oneelevenclub.co.uk/)

Not been myself but my friends and family think its fantastic. Bit pricey though,

It will cost you £10 to get in on a normal night - maybe more if there is someone special in.

The owner is a pal, and I have to say that he's done a fabulous job that loads of people love. The food is great.

I just utterly modern hate jazz !:D

There isn't one. I always think the best dress code is to not embarrass yourself or others ;)

I've actually been looking into this recently - I hear that Pizza Express on Devonshire St have live jazz on Tuesday nights (or at least they used to). Drop me a line if anyone is keen on checking it out @ 8pm 26/10... dpw_nz@hotmail.com.

There's also a Sheffield Jazz Club who organise events on Ecclesall Rd. www.sheffieldjazz.org.uk

And - Amy Winehouse is in town on Sat Nov 6.

And - I just came back from the Showroom Cinema (missed my session by 30 mins, doh!) and they have free live jazz every Sunday from 12 noon until 2pm (http://www.showroom.org.uk/).

There you go - that should keep you busy.

Cheers
Daniel

OK - Just checked the Pizza Express website - doesn't look like they do live jazz on Tuesdays anymore.

Am keen on One Eleven this Thursday though...

111 is really nice. It's got a good atmosphere and the food is nice too (perhaps a bit salty last time I was there). OK, it's pricey - if you're eating and drinking it'll be an expensive night, and the £10 entry isn't waived for diners. But the owner's enthusiasm is infectious, the acoustics are good, the music's good, and the place is fabulously done out.

For me it's an occasional posh evening - something of a treat. I'm not a big jazz fan but I do like it, and the whole vibe of the place is, er, nnnice. Grrreat ;)

Last time I was there people just wore what they wanted, but there were quite a few folks done up all smart so I was glad I didn't wear skanky jeans

anywhere play free jazz 9apart from 2 hours in Showroon)?

I'm not paying £10 for the pleasure of sitting in a club. That is a joke for Sheffield imo (as I assume that the drink and food are both pricey)

Try Trippets wine bar on Trippet Lane. They have jazz on Thursdays, costs £2 after 9 o clock but if you go just before 9 you get in free.

Also the Boardwalk on Snig Hill, have the Dizzy Club 2nd Friday of each month - see Dizzy Club website.

This website should give you a lot more info:- www.sheffieldswingandjazz.org

Thanks for the info - ended up at Trippets instead of OneEleven Club last night and saw the band do a few songs. Nice venue though you'll need to be early if you want a seat with a view of the band!

It seems we were watching the Dizzy Club playing Trippets last night too (http://www.dizzy-club.co.uk/index.html). Not too bad I must say.

OneEleven Club have Omar Puente and band playing next Wednesday Nov 3 (check this review out http://talk.workunlimited.co.uk/arts/reviews/story/0,11712,1313403,00.html)... 5 pounds entry. Drop me a line if anyone's keen on coming along. I've popped my head into OneEleven and the interior is definitely as nice as the website pics!!

Also, and I'm plugging here, if you like DJ-spun jazzy music to imbibe to then I would heartily recommend Trippets on a Wednesday. It's all dimmed lights & candles, with a VJ big screen projection to add to the ambience.

So to the music - we go from Ray Charles, through Nina Simone, through Nat King Cole on the old-school side, but we also do contemporary chill of the likes of Fingathing, Blue States, Cinematic Orchestra, Nitin Sawhney etc. Then we have the the really modern jazzy danceable stuff from the likes of 4Hero, Fat Freddy's Drop, JLive etc.

And it's free!

Where abouts is Trippets Wine Bar? Trippets Lane yes.. but where's Trippet's lane? Give me a postcode and I'll look it up on multimap, but yell.com found nothing :|

The Wednesday night sounds amazing

E-Man - what a cool playlist!

I didn't even know anyone had heard of Fat Freddy's Drop over here. Some smooth NZ music alright!

I'll be down there one Wednesday soon...
