In the late 50's a Pack-a-mac craze hit the UK, every body had one, they were great you could fold them up small and they would fit in your jacket pocket and very handy if you got caught in the rain..They were made of thin PVC all grey and semi transparent..later they became popular with flashers who walked about at night with no trousers and a torch in the pocket..so i got rid of mine.

Hee Hee.......and what happened to Rainmates?
They were compulsory for old women on a day out at Skeggy!
My partner still has his Pack-a -mac.
Is it worth something.
Is there something he should tell me.?

not true only old women wore rainmates, only women with grey hair with blue rinses so the blue didn't run, SO THERE!
LOL - Rainmates!! :D
As worn by both my grannies - and you know what, I bet my surviving granny still wears one when it's wet.
In fact... you often used to get Rainmates in Christmas crackers!!?? How rubbish must those crackers have been?

I've never got anything as good as a Rainmate out of a cracker! just a silly little spinning top, or a tiny plastic animal.:(
were they also known as a mackintosh? always remember my grom telling me not to forget it on days out
Charles Macintosh invented a fabric waterproofing process in 1823 which became the Macintosh raincoat...after that all raincoats were called Mac's.
My dad loved pac a macs, both myself and my sister had them.
If I remember correctly they were an aufull orange shade and we had to take them everywhere. I could never manage to get mine back into its packed state though. I was only 5 at the time.
I remember wearing it on a school trip to whirlow farm and a goat having a nibble on the arm I dont think my dad was amused with me
I remember our mom use to call rain coats Berberies (spelling ) ?
she use to say ,it's going to rain, take your berbery with you,
they were well made then, mostley dark green belted, lined pockets.

My mum would make me take one on school trips. Even in the summer "just in case it rains".
If you wore it when it was windy and the sun was out they used to go all soft and stick to your bare skin and they smelled like lilo beds.
