My dad has always been into photography and of late has been heavily into digital photography. He has a real talent and is starting the process of setting up a business. He has just done the photos for a second wedding and has a third lined up. He really excells in scenic photos though and makes cards or just pictures. Where can he start? They already have a market stall and sell greetings cards. Would e bay be a good place to start? What do you reckon?

Ebay would probably be a good place to start. If they're of certain localities around South Yorkshire or across the country. I'm pretty sure most of the people who search "Sheffield" or "Rotherham" with an intention of buying something on Ebay are older people with disposable incomes looking for that type of thing.

Another possible idea would be to take pictures of the locale and put them on postcards for Rotherham, Sheffield or Barnsley - in Doncaster last year a market trader lamented there wasn't any postcards of the local landmarks anymore, like in the past and commissioned 8 to be produced by a local photographer which he sold at his stall. Can't remember how many but it must have been in the high hundreds of each.

It got in the local paper and think it did well. I bought all 8 anyway - at about a quid a pop not sure what profit was gleaned but if it would get in surrounding local papers it would also get your Dads name around as a photographer. Plus a greeting cards stall would be perfect to sell them from and might get additional custom on that side from people coming to purchase the photos or postcards.

There's always the possibility of having a small website as well and sell them through Paypal. Use someone like Getdotted.com - about £13 for two years unlimited hosting and maybe just use a standard template and free software to update it.

If he's a good photographer he should try selling his photos to stock photo websites. Don't know how much money you can make out of it but I know a few professional photographers who've gone down that route.

Cheers guys. His stuff is really good. Someone he knows has started setting up a website for him as the stuff's so good. And he does Sheffield scenes! Thanks for your ideas! x

Hi, I know this thread is really REALLY old but I only just found it and I'm not sure if it's relevant anymore.

There's a great website called www.etsy.com which is for handmade products. It's american based so prices are in dollars but there are people from all over the place on there. The fees are so much cheaper than eBay too - it's only 20c to list for four months so that's like 10p and the final sale fee they take is about 2%.

Anyway, hope this helps. Check it out.

He can sell his photos online. but the opportunity I see is selling his service in your area. Try looking up free ads sites , like adpost, which cater to your area.

For free ad sites try typing into google "free ads" - another free one is topclassified.co.uk - these are useful for people starting / wanting to avoid any costs.
