View Full Version : The modest genius that is Coldplay.
The new Coldplay album will be a work of genius (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6418595.stm), according to Chris Martin of Coldplay.
Coldplay, second only to James Blunt in terms of musical talent, expect to release a new album some time this year. I, for one, cannot wait.
FallenAngel6 05-03-2007, 12:20 Arent all these new singers British as welll...i could have sworn Coldplay were British and Kaiser Chiefs! I love their new song Ruby it is soooo catchy lol
from fallen
NEKRO138 05-03-2007, 12:48 Ahh Coldplay. The most over rated band in the world.
alternageek 05-03-2007, 12:56 someone needs to tell mr martin that only noel and liam gallagher are the only british pop stars allowed to make those claims before their records are released.
Corr_Blimey 05-03-2007, 13:34 Not Coldplay's biggest fan but you have to accept they make good music.
A little too squeky clean for my liking though.
PuressenceUK 05-03-2007, 13:40 Coldplay - where do I start? Would love for them to play somewhere cold, like say the South Pole, with no thermals till they all freeze to death.
Chris Martin modest as ever there. Shame no-one has pointed out to him that he can't hold a tune, can't hit high notes and is responsible for the worst noise pollution ever to infect my ears.
Absolute bobbins.
In case you hadn't noticed I don't really like Coldplay that much.
I like the scientist but hate most of the other cack they have come out with, and I can't stand chris martin for some reason.
I don't like Kaiser Chiefs new song, thought their others were better but that's just my opinion.
I like Fratellies
Not Coldplay's biggest fan but you have to accept they make good music. ...
It's music for people who don't like music, just like Simply Red were in the early 90s. People buy it because everyone else does. And Chris Martin's whiny voice sets my teeth on edge.
This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6P-2GY-SgA) is better :| .
Chris_Sleeps 05-03-2007, 17:42 I don't mind them, its like a lot of pop music; it's good when they are a small band, but when the whole world is worshiping them you tend to think "they're not that good".
LordChaverly 05-03-2007, 17:48 The word 'genuis should be used more sparingly. Beethoven was a musical genuis, as was Mozart and Schubert. At best, the members of 'Coldplay' probably have very slender talents. To invoke the name of 'genuis' in this context is to devalue the meaning of the word.
...but when the whole world is worshiping them you tend to think "they're not that good".
Or alternatively, when they're actually not that good...
carcrash 05-03-2007, 18:01 I like the structure of one or two of their songs, yellow + fix but I'm not that keen realy

Yeah I also want to hold up my hand as a non Coldplay fan (can I put Keane and David Gray in here at the same time please?)
However in all seriousness, I love Simply Red.:| Sorry.
I'll get my coat.

David Gray's  in my book

That book being 'Annoying artists of the late nineties' ?
That book being 'Annoying artists of the late nineties' ?
Never read it;)
But I've read the "Simply Ginge, ugly, loads of money & what attracts birds to me" book:D
babyboom 05-03-2007, 22:08 I love Coldplay and would rather listen to them than Mozart.
neeeeeeeeeek 05-03-2007, 22:13 Porcupine Tree's Steve wilson or posibly Toby Marks aka Banco De Gaia are as close to genius as it gets.
:)
Preacher Man 05-03-2007, 22:45 I once had the fortunate pleasure of seeing Coldplay perform at V festival a few years ago. It was the day after I had watched the chilli peppers perform and Coldplay were a delight to watch, superior in every way to the wild thrashings from RHCP.
I also had the magnificent honour of witnessing sir (should be in my opinion) David Gray a few years later. My soul wept listening ot his haunting ballards. James Blunt is the young pretender but i want to hear his next album before i put him in the same catagory as the previously mentioned geinus of Messrs Martin and Gray.

I love sarcastic people. I love the idea of ballards uprooting themselves from the end of a road and haunting people even more. Especially ones owned by pop star David Gray.
Preacher Man 06-03-2007, 11:25 im not being sarcastic. i think james blunt is a poet with the potential of bettering dylan!!

Really? Well, I beg to differ. Even though Dylan was only a fictional rabbit, he played a mean guitar. Just ask Doodle or Zebedee.
alternageek 06-03-2007, 11:56 That book being 'Annoying artists of the late nineties' ?
say what you like about gray.
hes one of those artists that loves to record and is happy selling 1000 records as well as selling 1000000. is he the next dylan? no, not even close.. does it come across hes enjoying what hes doing? yes.
btw im not a huge david gray fan, but i was dragged to a show of his at madison square garden - about 8000 people - and even at that size he KNEW how to make it feel intimate and made it feel like there was only 100 people there. i was totally blown away. imo a live show is what makes someone stand out from the crowd. if you dont have it live then you dont have it at all.
now james blunt and james morrison i think are flashes in the pan and nothing special.
ive also seen coldplay live (dragged oddly enough by the same person who took me to david gray) twice and they didnt impress me much. i thought they were eh and martin was trying to be something he clearly was not
King Rat 06-03-2007, 13:15 Of all the depressive weedy suicidal studenty type UK bands Coldplay are probaly the best of that ilk.
im not being sarcastic. i think james blunt is a poet with the potential of bettering dylan!!
You're spot on there. Revel in the magnificence of this Blunt stanza:
My life is brilliant
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
It's positively Shakespearean.
Preacher Man 06-03-2007, 13:42 im glad that it is you who shares this passion with me hecate. i am honoured to share the connection and bond we do regarding the mecurial Blunt. i feel the following lyrics to be of such outstanding beauty they have moved me to tears many a time!
I just can't believe that it's over.
We were chilling out on the sofa,
Digging how the guitar goes,
In a song that no one knows.
I like Coldplay but god they're depressing. They're essential break-up songs aren't they?
As it James Blunt, who makes my skin crawl - but he is a nice writer.

I certainly have tears of some description rolling down my cheeks after reading that! :hihi:
JFKvsNixon 06-03-2007, 14:00 im not being sarcastic. i think james blunt is a poet with the potential of bettering dylan!!
I'll bet that you also think that he is a better drummer than Keith Moon.
Preacher Man 06-03-2007, 14:13 i would, and he was better than richard starkey..
JFKvsNixon 06-03-2007, 14:21 i would, and he was better than richard starkey..
I heard he discovered the Americas.
Preacher Man 06-03-2007, 14:34 now your being silly sir! although i did hear a rumour they found an almost exact likeness of James BLunt carved into a murial in one of the great pyramids!! Maybe his god given talent is actually that!
NEKRO138 06-03-2007, 14:52 I saw James Blunt's face in my soup the other day. I held him down and tried to drown him but he simply drank his way out of trouble.
deadheadfred 06-03-2007, 14:54 When you feel quite hungry, and you want to eat
When you won’t eat fish and you won’t eat meat
When the food you want is a tasty treat
Stuck in the ground
Throw the veggies in a pot,
Just add water, make it hot,
And I will try to cook you.
Chris Martin = Miserable Vegetablist.
Preacher Man 06-03-2007, 14:54 see!! he is intelligance as well as talent, that was quick thinking..
Agent Gypo 06-03-2007, 16:28 Coldplay. Probably the band I loathe more than any other.
Having heard each and every music-by-numbers track from their second album, I have no interest in infecting my ears with their drivel ever again.
Chris Martin is fast becoming as annoying as Bono too.
The only thing going for this 5hitarse, dire group of so-called musicians, is that they aren't Keane.
Coldplay, second only to James Blunt in terms of musical talent
Being told your second to James Blunt must the ultimate insult for anyone with even the slightest bit of musical talent.
deadheadfred 06-03-2007, 16:48 Being told your second to James Blunt must the ultimate insult for anyone with even the slightest bit of musical talent.
True, very true.
So Chris Martin, having not even the slightest bit of musical talent, can't be insulted by the comment.

Hands that man a tenner - if you want truely miserable student based tracks check out my signature (even though me and the band have not been students for 10 years)
Preacher Man 06-03-2007, 23:02 I certainly have tears of some description rolling down my cheeks after reading that! :hihi:
tears of bitterness perchance? a deep loathing because you acknowledge the profound greatness in his work but know that you yourself fall miserably short of matching his subtle turn of phrase and his intuitive reading of human emotions!
i know you shed tears of bitterness because i too share your pain.
I think James Blunt is over rated. He had one good song that soon got on your nerves probably due to repeated radio and TV play.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers now theres a band - in my opinion.
And The kinks
Lucy-Lastic 07-03-2007, 13:08 Dont know if I should admit this but I actually really like Coldplay and David Gray:o Not sure Chris Martin can sing and he is an arrogant so n' so, but I love the instrumentals Im afraid. Dont know why you have a downer on David Gray:suspect: Am I allowed to say I also like Snow Patrol and Athlete ..... or are they bands I sholdnt like too:hihi:
White ladder was a great album but since then don't think david has done much.
Lucy-Lastic 07-03-2007, 13:34 White ladder was a great album but since then don't think david has done much.
Indeed - hes been a bit quiet. Stuff from before then was great too - I shouldnt be admitting that I like his music after such a slating on this thread should I:blush: :hihi: So then which bands should I like as Im obviously liking the wrong stuff:D
Dont know if I should admit this but I actually really like Coldplay ...
:o For that, you should be condemned to knitting only with scratchy acrylic and bendy plastic needles! :hihi:
It's all a personal choice I think. If we all liked the same it would be a boring world. I personally like Chilli Peppers, Beatles, Kinks, Fratellies, The Smiths. And a lot more.
Banjo Griner 21-03-2007, 19:21 Coldplay, second only to James Blunt in terms of musical talent
Good one. Beethoven, Hendrix and Scruggs are in bits over that cracker.
Coldplay are a bunch of James Blunts.

I'm guessing you missed Keane off that list as well.
