I like the idea of writing about childhood memories as I have lots of those, and my own children are always asking me to relate them :) Makes me feel a bit like an old grandma really!

Once, when my kids were flagging on a long walk, I kept them going with stories of all the walks I used to go on with my sister when I was their age. One story in particular got their attention, especially as I had written it up in full detail at the time it happened, since our school homework at the time was to keep a diary of our summer holidays. After a thorough hunt through the attic, I was able to dig out my old school books and find my record of the walk as it was written when I was 12 years old.

So for this contribution I have cheated (sorry!) and reproduced my old school work.

Be warned, it's very long. But I do hope at least someone will read it, if only because it took me so long to type :hihi:

I enjoyed reading that contribution, sauerkraut.

It's a window into the past which evokes memories of the sense of adventure I had as a child too. :)

It's extremely well-written too. :)

Why, thank you! And well done for ploughing through it. I had to keep a diary for a month that summer and it's full of tales of all our walks and adventures. I used to go cycling with a group of friends as well and we were for ever getting lost. I still have no sense of direction

The great thing about where I live now is that my children still have freedom to roam and are able to enjoy the same kind of Enid Blyton style childhood I had. My daughters are avid writers too, but I doubt I could get them to post on here as they probably don't want me to know what they get up to :)

How right you are! It was 30 years ago and I still talk about it! Although I think having written about it at such length at the time also helped it stay in my memory.

I can only presume that as my wife shares the same uncanny navigational abilities as your big sis that they must be somehow related.

Many is the time she has spent all day poring over maps & using some sort of haphazard clairvoyance to get to where we shouldn’t be, whilst reassuring me that the sun always sets slowly in the East on Tuesdays….

A very enjoyable story Saurkraut, it certainly struck a personal chord with me
