I am getting married in July next year, so when should I think about getting the dress? I'm all excited about it and want to get everything sorted ASAP, but is it too soon to get the dress?

View Full Version : How soon should I start looking for a wedding dress? swfcgal 05-03-2007, 09:04 I am getting married in July next year, so when should I think about getting the dress? I'm all excited about it and want to get everything sorted ASAP, but is it too soon to get the dress? Bago 05-03-2007, 09:25 No, start as soon as possible. You can start trying different ones of different shapes ans styles to fit you first. It depends on your body shape, and you may find a design better fits you than another. So I'd try and narrow down choices as soon as possible. This part isn't even involving the alterations, and changes yet! LJB23 05-03-2007, 09:41 Yeah get trying them on, if you find the one then get it. You need to go back a few times anyway to check for alterations so it's not too early no. willman 05-03-2007, 12:25 my daughter bought bridesamaids last yer October actually. and weddign dress in januray in this year for July 2008 wedding. hers is now being made in her rough size, (6) ready for adjsutments for shoes etc when it has been made and the ensemble has been collated. charlie9865 05-03-2007, 12:32 im getting married june 2nd this year.I got my wedding dress weeks after wedding was booke.we booked it august last year i think. charlie x x swfcgal 05-03-2007, 14:48 Oooooo good! I'm all excited about it and want to get everything sorted ASAP, but is it too soon to get the dress? Next year? Planning ahead a bit here arnt you? Anything could happen between now and then. LJB23 05-03-2007, 15:19 I think you'll find a wedding takes a lot of planning. And what do you mean anything could happen, hopefully fingers crossed for her it won't. If we all thought like that no one would get married. artisan 05-03-2007, 15:47 I think you'll find a wedding takes a lot of planning. And what do you mean anything could happen, hopefully fingers crossed for her it won't. If we all thought like that no one would get married. No it doesnt, we have been married for over thirty years, and planned ours in about two months, big reception and party, and a good time was had by everyone. As well as all our family and friends we even dragged our neighbours in so they would not be disturbed by the noise. The more you plan these things, the worse they are. Let it go with the flow and have a good time. swfcgal 05-03-2007, 15:50 Next year? Planning ahead a bit here arnt you? Anything could happen between now and then. With two kids (both under 6) to run around after, I need to plan ahead or nothing would get done! :D LJB23 05-03-2007, 15:52 My friend got married last year and it took a lot of planning, maybe things have changed in 30 years plus it takes a lot longer to save as they now cost more. There's no harm in planning after all you want it to be perfect Ginger_Kitty 05-03-2007, 16:03 It only takes a lot of planning if you make it complicated. I bought my dress about 4-5 months before my wedding, i'd only started looking a few weeks before. We planned the whole thing in 6 months.... and had a break in the middle. I can understand that arranging it round kids etc takes more but it needn't take over your life for 18 months... LJB23 05-03-2007, 16:05 I suppose it all depends on what type of person you are, your circumstancesand how big the whole thing is artisan 05-03-2007, 16:12 My friend got married last year and it took a lot of planning, maybe things have changed in 30 years plus it takes a lot longer to save as they now cost more. There's no harm in planning after all you want it to be perfect I agree completely, it is a lot of fun, but with weddings things can and will go wrong. The most expensive one being the dressmakers and caterers going out of business. You can be sure the banks will always take the money, and leave you floundering. :( swfcgal 05-03-2007, 16:12 It's not a big wedding as such, we are having approx. 100 guests and that's mostly family! Another reason we are planning ahead is the financial side of it, it will take us a year or so to save up as my OH is the wage earner and it is only his wage coming in. Ginger_Kitty 05-03-2007, 16:19 I'd say get the venue booked and paid for (if they need payment upfront) and the registrar (or vicar!) just to make sure you have somewhere to go...(oh and a photographer) then relax for a bit and get your dress and adult bridesmaids etc at the most a year before, (other wise you'll have to have endless alterations if you lose/put on weight) and leave the baby bridesmaids (if there are any) til much later as kids grow quickly. you're probably better getting quotes from florists etc and setting aside some money each month to allow for it, weddings cost money at the end... ours did anyway, so if you put it aside in another account then you know you will have enough at the end. Set a strict budget for your dress... an upper limit that you will not go beyond, that makes that easier moneywise too. So even if you haven't bought it already you know the maximum it will cost. you could always have an informal look and try-on early to see what suits and what you can get for your budget.... swfcgal 05-03-2007, 16:24 The venue and the registrar are provisonally booked, it's just deposits that they will need upfront and the registrar's fee isn't due until about 3 or 4 weeks until the wedding. ( I checked that bit out :) ) And I think I'll go and have a look round a few dress shops just to get an idea of styles and then maybe wait for the January sales! :D Ginger_Kitty 05-03-2007, 16:30 I think its best to work out how much you want to spend... and how much each bit will cost... then work out the priorities... and what can be sacrificed if something gets expensive (meals for wedding breakfast are amazingly expensive!!!) that was over half of our total cost!!! January sales sounds good :) you'll have time from then til july :) swfcgal 05-03-2007, 16:35 We aren't having a wedding breakfast, nor a sit down meal for that matter lol. We are provisionally booked in for 4 o'clock for the ceremony then the reception is to be held straight after and we are only having a finger buffet as it works out over 10 quid per head cheaper lol! Ginger_Kitty 05-03-2007, 16:37 damn good idea!!!! we decided against the usual type of reception and had a carvery buffet thing, kinda a combination of the two at £18ph then stuff the evening do... we hate loud music and stuff so we sent 'em all home at 4.30 ;) artisan 05-03-2007, 16:37 We aren't having a wedding breakfast, nor a sit down meal for that matter lol.
