View Full Version : Centre pull balls?
Lucy-Lastic 04-03-2007, 19:26 Do you guys tend to take your yarn from the centre of a ball or the outside? I know that if you take it from the centre the yarn stays where you put it - rather than bouncing about. Is there a reason why you wouldnt take from the centre?
I take mine from the outside of the ball, usually pull too much yarn out, get it tangled and have to ask my hubby to get the knots out :hihi:
I mostly take the yarn from the outside, especially the ones I've wound myself on the ball winder. The squat little yarn patties tend to stay sitting upright for quite a while, and when they don't, I pop them in one of those press-to-seal plastic bags.
I do sometimes ferret around for the yarn end on the inside of the ball; it's useful when you have to knit with two strands. I've just been using two strands of a Jaeger baby merino which comes in one of those saucer-shaped balls. I used both the inner and the outer yarn ends together, which was far less hassle than winding two balls. The two strands never tangled either.
I'm a centre of the roll user- it's just easier to not have the cats chasing the ball all over the place.
I use it from the outside, although like wheezy, I usually pull too much off and it gets tangled into knots and I have to ask my bloke to untie all the knots for me.
Plain Talker 04-03-2007, 23:09 like hecate, I also tend to take from the middle only when I am knitting two items at once, (eg socks or, perhaps the sleeves of a baby cardigan, something like that.) and I need to use the wool evenly. (frightened to go too far over the "middle" of the ball, and leaving myself short, perhaps)
I take it from the side too rather than the centre. I've never tried taking it from the middle before.
I usually take it from the centre so that it doesn't roll about. I haven't heard of any reason why you shouldn't pull it from the centre though. My mum only used it from the outside, but that may have been down to patience, or the lack of it. She wouldn't have been happy if it had got all knotted.

We learn something every day (or so I'm told!) :suspect: :hihi:
beansforyou 05-03-2007, 16:03 if i'm using my own handspun yarn, I take it from the centre.
If its a commercial yarn I take it from around the edge.

Why?
That's what I wanted to ask but I was told my message was too short and to make it at least 10 characters long!!!!

I can never find the end in the centre! After pulling lots of yarn out to try and find it I tend to shove it all back in and use the outside end :hihi:

LOL That's very often what I end up doing. I've found that it's much easier to find the end in the middle of the ball on those yarns that are wound to look a bit like a flying saucer (Rowan Tapestry (http://www.knotanotherhat.com/admin/images/products/rTapestry.jpg), for example).

 Because I make my own centre-pull balls when i've spun my own yarn, so I know where the end of the yarn is, I make it prominent.
Any commercial yarn I use tends to be cheaper acrylics and in balls where I don't think they have a centre pull, I have enough trouble finding the outside yarn
I don't really buy skeins of yarn (ie expensive) anymore, if I want a particular type of yarn, I make it myself, but I have a large stash of commercial from before I started spinning.
I think thats 10 characters..... :)
rofl.....I knew you'd have a good answer for that beans :)
