View Full Version : Anyone Interested In Making A film..?
Dronfeldian 12-02-2003, 07:09 Would there be any amongst us all who can make a film based in Sheffield. Looking for Ideas and locaiotns and moods to recreate Sheffield. WANTED - People fomr all areas.. what we start out as fun could turn into something we can all be proud of. Its just an idead but it could work - and it could be fun. Ideas - Equipment.
It struck me the other day when I was watching directors of other such classics that it really is easy when you have an idea to turn it into something that all can appreciate..
What Do you think....
DaBouncer 27-09-2003, 15:23 First I'd say you need a good script before embarking on making of a film. What sort of film would you be interested in making?
Do you have a budget or are you just gonna wing it. I'm in the middle of writing a script at them moment, but it IS top secret and probably would be better off in a more renoun city such a Manchester or London.
I agree with DaBouncer, if a film is to be any good then first you need a great script, if you don't have that then you have nothing. If you are interesting in screenwriting, take a look at the book Story by Robert McKee (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0413715604/qid=1064683127/br=3-2/br_lfncs_b_2/202-2552095-5219026) (which was lampooned in the film Adaptation).
Phanerothyme 27-09-2003, 19:15 I am also writing a film script (larval stage atm) for a SF film set in near future sheffield. Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire are mostly underwater and Sheffield is a waterfront city.
I had a similar idea some time ago when I was into the Visual Graphics side of things on the PC, had all the software for it too like Adobe Premier and Combustion.......the idea I had was to make an existing book into a movie using some locations in Sheffield, I was thinking of a Discworld book (Terry Pratchett) being made into a film as I know that Terry Pratchett loves to see films that fans have made, and one perfect location is that weird church near Sharrow, I think it's Cemetary Road church, has weird shaped doorways and a spooky looking derelict building, very scary place.
First you need lots of money!!!

What better way to help increase a city's renoundedness than make a film in it? :D
(nb., is renoundedness a word??)
kittykat 28-09-2003, 00:53 ooooh i would love to make a film as long as i can have the main part and the main part is a glamourous young woman. If filming was scheduled round me id work for free too.
Lets film it in a nice leafy suburb like ecclesall - maybe it could be a murder mystery

Ooooh you are awful!!
Internetowl 28-09-2003, 12:30 or how about a disaster movie....set in S10. A jumbo jet loaded with nuclear waste crashes in Endcliffe Park and T020 is called up to clean it up and still be home in time for sunday tea and cakes...

Get some (semi-prof) experience first... The MA Screen Arts students at Hallam are always looking for helping hands on their shoots - they'v got all the equipment, knowhow and a few ideas to help you get started.
There must be some kind of community film project going on in a city of Shef's size - that would be an ideal starting point.
Making films ain't easy, folks.
Phanerothyme 28-09-2003, 13:26 that depends on your approach. lo-fi scriptless arthaus shorts can be quick to make.
tinajones 28-09-2003, 13:34 all you need is a dv cam and something like avid or premier on your computer. quite easy to do these days - some of my friends who do loads of stuff come from arts backgrounds and the others just have a genuine interest and passion for film.
some courses just make you a pea in a pod, so if its creativity and fun your after i'd just experiment! super 8 is great fun too and projectors and cameras can be picked up quite cheap from second hand shops. you have to send your film off to kodak central to be processed but its a reliable service.
DaBouncer 28-09-2003, 14:27 Nice to see my revival of this OLD thread caused a debate.
Well dont chaps!
Yes Robert McKee's 'Story' is a very good book.
Anyone interested in learning to write scripts could benefit from ''Teach Yourself Screenwriting'' by Raymond G Fensham.
Then you can sign up for an edition of Final Draft 6 to help with writing the script (format and such). I also recommend reading a few screenplay books to movies you have seen. To get an idea of how they are written too.
Mine is nowhere near finished yet... keep changing my mind and going in other directions. But it's coming on strong!

That would be S11 then.
PS. GIVE IT A F**KING REST
waxy chuff 28-09-2003, 15:59 Yeah, good luck with making films on your desktop.
Surely no one is suggesting illegally using a copy of AVID?!
You can make films in this manner, but why not learn a wee bit about how to actually use your bleeding equipment, otherwise most of your efforts will be pis*poor wedding-video quality nonsense.
By the way, you can start working on your masterpiece whilst doing this.
I have seen some very good amateur shorts, but I've seen far more shocking ones, where really good ideas have been let down by poor implementation.
Well, didn't know this thread would still be in existence, old thread, but, still around, lol.
Well, I have got back into the film production and editing scene, I have posted elsewhere about wanting to create a film based in Sheffield, but, I am still waiting for a script, which should hopefully be done soon.
Kry, ive just read 'weerz me dad' by fred pass again, this would be a great idea. Loads of people would like to see how people lived in the 40's in working class areas, i think.
I'm up for it AND I have experience in various ways, I also have various people for acting content. There's loads I can do but I'm currently on my third script and film with my drama class so I'll be busy for a little while.
However, if anyone wants to help out and gets back to me very soon I could make use of people in a big way and it would shape the script I'm writing at the moment.
It's a ghost story, mostly centred around kids and it will be shot Blair Witch stylee because I'm not much cop at that side of things and found my first employed person from SHU to be useless and a let down, the second has taken longer than I like editing so I'm doing it myself.
So, if you want to do a film early in 07 and want experience rather than money - I'm your woman!
I'm also interested in other projects though.
the Sheffield film has already been made and its called F***ing Sheffield and is a documentary in the doc fest and will also be dhown for a few days afterwards at the showroom
First you need lots of money!!!
No, first you need dedication and an idea then you need help then if its good you get lots of money
Diabolique 20-10-2011, 18:06 yes very much would like to, ive written several screenplays
This doesn't appear to such a popular thread so I suspect this might take quite a bit of work to get going but I'd be prepared to give it a shot. I have little/no experience but am willing to turn my hand to anything.
