View Full Version : Boredom of my baby dwarf hamster, kiytu
elephantnellie 04-03-2007, 12:38 :help: ok..so i've just bought a dwarf hamster. he is called Kiytu (said like "key-toe") and he is very friendly he has learnt to use a litter box i made for him... thing is though, i think he's bored. i only got him yesterday and the cage i have is quite boring as i couldn't afford anything extravigant...it is a Rotastak cosmo pod...but i know i can add things to it. does anyone know of anything i can get to stop my baby hammy getting bored?
Ideas would be much appreciated :)

Ginger_Kitty 04-03-2007, 12:43 cardboard tubes.... our old hamsters loved either chewing them to bits or running in and out of them :)
cardboard tubes should keep him occupied and give him something to chew, when i used to have a hamster i used to hide bits of cucumber in them aswell.
elephantnellie 04-03-2007, 12:47 thanks :) i have just put in a cardboard tube and he looks a bit scared of it. i'm sure he will love it soon :) thank you :) xx
Ginger_Kitty 04-03-2007, 12:50 hell get used to it :)
you never need a paper shredder when you have a small rodent :D
It might also be worth getting some decent woody things to chew on, he might like those too
oh and a wheel if he's not got one (and earplugs for you for when he goes mad on it in the middle of the night)
If he likes chewing, you could also get a couple of safe fruit-wood branches, which haven't had pesticides on, that you can wash thoroughly and give him something to climb up and chew on.
Any garden fruit tree can be the donor for safe branches to chew for animals- and you can change them round for variety too.
elephantnellie 04-03-2007, 13:02 :) thank you for the ideas :)
I am going to try pets at home for some bit and pieces today. hopefully, i can have a less bored hamster by this evening :) x

The little grass houses they have at pets@home are good my hamster used to love those
I was in Middleton's the other day and they have a selection of stuff you might want to look at. It's right at the end of The Moor.
I have no idea how the prices compare with elsewhere though.
I often see balls and toys which you can fill with treats. They are supposed to be for cats and dogs but something like that might keep him amused if you can find a hamster sized one.
Birth-Peace 05-03-2007, 09:44 Hi there Sweetpea.
Make sure that there is loads of sawdust (or whatever you use) for him to bury in, and scatter the food amongst the bedding so he has to go digging for food too.
Get a ball for him to run around in, he will terrify the cats :hihi: :hihi:
xx
BlackVelvet 05-03-2007, 09:55 get a cardbord tube, put some treats in the middle, then stuff the ends with kitchen roll. Just another variation on chewing the tube, and he gets a reward for his efforts . coconut shells are another good one, either with or without the coconut in. again, avoid any that may have been sprayed with anything nasty
elephantnellie 05-03-2007, 19:25 ooo the coconut sounds good :) I got a special ball for him which is for dwarfs especially :) i also bought a wheel to attach to the cage plus some wood things which he especially likes to throw at the cage in the middle of the night hehe!
and LesleyB, middletons is where my baby hammy is from :) was it all the reduced stuff in the corner near the animals? i might go back :)
Thankyou guys x
BlackVelvet 06-03-2007, 09:01 Hey!, no problem  i used all these tricks when i had gerbils in my younger days. I have the kids pestering now, but told them they have to wait till they are a little older (like about 12) and better understand the responsibility of looking after them like i did. as my mum made sure i took care of them.
elephantnellie 06-03-2007, 23:39 aww animals are the best.i am 15 and i have 3 hamsters that i have bought myself and a rabbit too. i have kind of ended up with 2 more hamsters as my friend is no longer able to look after them. they are a breed of chienese hamster..very very small. they have a different cage and stuff but they seem to HATE cardboard tubes. they are sisters and they are quite stuck up. they are also very bitey. this might be because they weren't very well treated from a young age though. i think i will try some new tricks with them soon. maybe they will like jars. my other hamster kiytu does :) x
elephantnellie 06-03-2007, 23:40 i treat them all like royalty :)
Hi Samantha,
Unlike syrian hamsters who are solitary animals, dawrf hamsters prefer to have company so this could explain Kiytu's boredom? If possible, it might be a good idea to get another dwarf of the same age and sex to keep him happy?
My two russian dwarves, Phil and Fern, used to love living together and would run on the same wheel all night long - great fun to watch! ; )
carpetviper 07-03-2007, 13:09 I have two of the russian dwarfs and they love it when you bore a hole in a coconut they spend hours chewing it out and storing it in their little hidey places.
elephantnellie 07-03-2007, 23:01 i have 3 hamsters, 1 russian and 2 others but they live in a different cage as they are quite vicious and they attack my little Kiki. i may consider getting another hamster instead of my mice. thankyou :)
