View Full Version : Dog Poo - 42 dollops!

Just been to the Co-Op on Gleadless Road, Heeley, and passed 42 dog poos on the pavement, in what was only a 3 min walk!! :shakes:
Some had already been walked in, and others were ripe, waiting to ruin someone's day. This is not only gross to look at, a health hazard, and very inconvenient (I had to weave all over the place to avoid them at either side, and bang in the middle of the pavement), but surely dangerous for people who might slip on them?? My mum trod in one once, and really hurt herself when she fell, as well as having the hassle of acquiring a disgusting odour.
Does anyone know if wardens actually patrol areas looking for offenders, cos there's definitely plenty around Heeley?:help:

That's just horrible- I really get annoyed at owners who don't clear up after their dogs, especially on pavements.

Strangely I noticed the same thing (not 42 dollops though) whilst walking down Stannington Road to Hillsborough this morning.

Spent most of the walk angling my son away from it all the way down.:gag:

The people who are supposed to stop this are the dog-owners. I've just been up Blackstock Road and a gentleman showed me the disgusting mess on his lawn. Because it's open to the pavement, dog owners let their dogs onto his lawn to crap. On the pavement 2 yards away from the edge of his lawn is a bin and a notice warning owners not to let their dogs foul the footpath.

Is there anything we can do about it?

pet-walkiz
03-03-2007, 14:18
At pet-walkiz we pick up all mess inc dog hair when we brush/groom the dogs out doors and if there are no bins available, we carry it around until we do find one. once a lady tutted at me when she saw a pile of mess and told me i should take my dog elsewhere...i was on my way back from the open fields with a clients dog and the mess was done by someone elses dog. so those who dont pick it up leave it for others to blamed for it.
Ive even picked other dogs mess up!!
Also, ive seen people with their dog on a lead and stand there whilst the dog and let it mess on someones path or garden just gazing around as if they cant see what their dog is doing, and then have a sneaky look to see if anyone saw them, then quickly walk away.what is also annoying is the kerb egde as passengers un-beknowing stand in it then get into the car!
its tempting to offer the culprit a poop bag but never knowing the response its probably better to pick it up yourself.

There should be an on the spot fine of a minimum £1000 for dog owners or the dogs taken off them. Also people in the public should be rewarded money for reporting people who do this nasty deed. Absolutely disgusting

Any idea who it can be reported to? It would be difficult to report the offender, unless you knew their address, and had proof it was their dog's mess. The only way I envisage this situation can be improved, is to have more wardens patrolling heavily-pooped areas, specifically looking for offenders. They could be financed by the fines imposed, and would probably generate enough money left over to give the NHS or public transport a financial boost too (especially if your figure of £1000 applied!)

I hadn't set out with that intention when I left the house, but was so appalled at having to dodge so much of it, I thought I'd back my comments up with some hard facts (accrued on my return journey) to bring the point home!

I think it is disgusting when people do not clean up after their animals. I have 3 cats who go outside but they dont go off my garden and always come back in the house to the litter tray when they need to "go"! A neighbour of mine has been known to take her very large dog for a walk and when its done its "business" wipe its bottom and not pick the mess up! I went out and told her to clear it away or I would clear it up and put it through her letter box! She has never let her dog do anything near my house since!

I had a go at a guy I saw making a poor attempt to cover up with a few leaves a large poo I'd just seen his dog do on a very narrow footpath the other day. He claimed his dog had "never done that before" but you could tell by the way he was sweeping leaves over it with his foot that he was used to doing it. He also said it was O.K. because it was at the side of the path and people only walk down the middle. When I pointed out that kids tend not to walk down the middle he said that was their fault. He also called me ignorant at which point I pointed out that I wasn't the one who'd just broken a law but he'd obviously got it into his head that he'd done nothing wrong! It annoys me that I had a dog for 11 years and always cleaned up after her & then you see lazy gits like that!

On my walks with my dog I regularly see piles of poo just left. The majority of them are on the field but the amount that are on the pavements, right in the middle of them too are disgusting - especially as most people have said, there are dog poo bins only a few yards away.

The amount of times I have seen plastic bags that people have used to pick their dog poo up with just chucked on the floor is ridiculous. Why pick it up and then just leave the bag there anyway???

I'm a dog owner and I just find it incredible that people can stand there with a dog on it's lead whilst it fouls the pavement.
I don't like it either when people walking in the park simply ignore the fact that their dog is poo-ing in what is a childrrens play area. I'm sure in Hillsborough park they have fenced off small sections which are for dog toilets and there are signs asking that you clear up after your animal. So what possible excuse could the young guy I saw have with the dark brown staffy looking the other way as his dog leftit's sizable pile near the lake.

Can I just point a few people in this direction (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=192316)?

How can a city that thinks treating its streets as an open sewer is okay, complain at dog poo on the pavements?

This is the only city I have lived in where being able to walk along the street and urinate at the same time is regarded as some sort of achievement

Until the 'culture' of revelling in [squalor] is broken, the rest of us have no chance of seeing civilisation

Yes, something has provoked this rant, and I can't even take consolation in the fact that my own dog has more respect for this city than some of the scum born and bred here, because it's inflicted upon us all

There are 'scum' in every city, i have seen filthy individuals using the streets as a toilet in most of the towns and cities i have worked in.
Including a woman of at least 40yrs of age squatting behind a taxi on Mathew st in Liverpool one Saturday evening (not my favorite memory of the place)
Also a group of 5 lads in Bristol urinating against the club wall they were hoping to get in to, whilst in the queue.

There is little difference between 'scum' who foul the streets and 'scum' who deliberately allow their dogs to foul the streets in my opinion.

Dogs sh*tting everywhere is one of the few things that actually gets me angry. And never more so since I became a mother - your child is just simply not free to run around! Parkland or not! All the time - you have to be on Sh*t Alert.

The selfishness and downright thick b*stard stupidity of dog owners who let their dogs dump anywhere and leave it there astounds me to be honest - a lot of these people have their own children..! I often fantasise about smearing the sh*te on the owners house door, shoving it messily through the letterbox, depositing it back on their doorstep etc :hihi:

And if you're going to be stupid about it....

anybody living within a 3 mile radius of the city centre should have no right to own a car. They don't need one, clog up the streets making parking difficult for visitors to the city who wish to boost the economy by bringing their money here to spend

Brude is trained to use a shower tray in our garden. When we visit another city, we make good use of available dog bins - having chosen the location suitable for toileting a dog. He's also trained to use the gutter to urinate in such circumstances - usually a drain.

Banning culture works for more than one group in society, and there are things way up that list above depriving people of the ray of sunshine having a pet in their lives brings

I really don`t think there is any excuse for not picking up dog mess there are a number of places for people to get free dog bags although since June last year these bags have been nappy sacks which I find too thin for the job so as a responsible dog owner I know buy dog bags from the shops but for those who don`t or won`t buy the bags you could always put 2 nappy sacks together to make them thicker, it really annoys me when I have to navigate myself, children and dog away from any mess so as not to stand in it.

I always pick my pooches poo up and NEVER walk her without at least one carrier bag in my pocket. Often I will also scoop up any other that has been inconsiderately left behind by other owners. With no bins in my area I carry it for our entire walk and dispose of it at home.

You should be able to report non-poop picker uppers to the 112(?) community police people, however this would only be of use were you to see the incident occur and you knew where the owner lived.

Would a return to people having to register their dog help? Then maybe people could be traced?? However I feel that the council wouldn't be prepared to back it. It's up to us to get it back to the social taboo it once was, and more fines need to be issued and publicised.

How ridiculous Strix, get a grip - the sentence needed no punctuation further to what was already there, as the words alone "dog owners who let their dogs dump anywhere" were quite adequate. Feel free to demonstrate where extra punctuation would have made it clearer to yourself that I did not mean that I thought all dog owners are thick and selfish? What I said was in no way 'ambiguous', it clearly stated that I consider dog owners who do not pick up their dog mess to be selfish and stupid.

And 'relish' being your choice of word - but I do find the idea of smearing abandoned dog sh*t back onto the owners door rather amusing - send it back home, why not. Makes a change from it being tramped into innocents home carpets, trodden into shoe soles, getting onto children's hands, clothes etc.

Well, the day I am found guilty of actually smearing dog excrement on the offending dog owners property with intoxicated joy, then you will have every right to shout that at me. Until then - there is a world of difference between thinking something, and actually performing it.

but your post is exactly why people think it's okay to vent their anger upon every dog and their owner
Well, I can't see how myself - no dog owner can surely be held guilty unless their dog is seen taking a dump and the owner seen walking away and leaving it on the ground? Which is sadly the way it is, as if you knew which dog every abandoned dump came from it'd be easy to 'return to sender' and deal with the offending owners. Its a shame if you personally have found yourself bearing the brunt of non-dog lovers blame, for dog mess around the city.

If you see a dog owner letting the dog cr*p on the pavement, why not point your mobile phone at them and pretend to take a picture? If they ask what you're doing, tell them you're going to send the picture to Environmental Health?
You could also tell them that anyone allowing their dog to repeatedly foul the pavement is likely to have their dog taken away from them and destroyed - most dog owners are so simple they'll probably believe you.

My wife and I own and walk two dogs. Each day they are taken for "walkies" and YES they do make some "deposits". These are carefully picked up in bags and put into the available bins. Every day we are amazed at the massive amounts of dog poo carelessly left on pavements and grass verges. We see many dog walkers with dogs of varying sizes and never do they seem to clear up after their dogs. The laws should be enforced more often, and maybe the message will get through to them. Let me tell you that it doesn't just stop at the pavements. The parks are being spoiled by these irresponsible people. Their dogs are just let loose to do whatever, despite the danger to children playing with balls and other toys. I even saw a dog walker using a sling to send a hard missile a long way for their loose dog. Remember----David killed Goliath with a sling !!!!!! A couldn't care less attitude prevails !!!

You ought to see at my sister's house! Its supposed to be a reasonably nice estate in High Green as well. Owners have let their dogs poo on the pavement at the front of her house, and in the corner of her front garden! Absolutely digusting it is! It makes my blood boil. She's had a sign put up by the council, but whether it'll make any difference or not, I really don't know!

I have done events before to highlight this issue - getting children out onto their local playing fields, parks, sand dunes etc and sticking little flags in to all the poo they find. Makes quite a shocking picture!
I also like this little effort... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3856215.stm

But we never did this! Mayybe we should start... http://www.boingboing.net/2005/01/23/planting_flags_in_do.html

Many years ago we had a dog,and picking up your dogs poo was something new.The amount of poo deposited was bad then,I can"t imagine what it would be like if responsible people did not clean up after their dogs today.
People used to snigger at me when they saw me with my poop scoop.
I used to go mad at my OH for not wanting to take the scoop when he took our yorkie out.
I solved that problem one year on April Fools day.
I wrote a letter as though it was coming from a local person who had seen him let the dog continually do its business in the street. The letter said that the writer was very irate, and if "you do not clear up the mess after your dog has defecated on the pavement then you will be prosecuted"
The look on the OH "s face was priceless!
But,it did the trick, and he always took the poop scoop or a bag afterwards! I was so pleased! Victory!

because they dont put bonemeal in dog food now.

There are no excuses for not picking up after your dog- it is sheer laziness. You can buy a box of 100 dog poo bags from any pound/ tat shop for a quid.

Thats dutty that, its like that on arbourthorne road it just stinks of turd lol, id have to move i couldn,t put up with that day in day out.

Yes got a dog and totally agree, poop needs picking up !

Can I just raise a point though.

I was walking my dog early the other morning on the Sportsman field, Lodge Moor.
This field is a right minefield of poo and my kids play on here so it concerns me.

Anyway my lard head of a dog decided to have way more clearouts than usual and Im really sorry to say I got caught out with no bags left.

Looking around with no one in sight, a car with another dog walker in turns around in the car park.
A women inside with her window up starts waveing her finger at me.
As I approached the car she then sped off down Redmires road.

Oh, how I could have done with asking her if she could spare a bag.
With no one else around I abanded it to the rain, shouting at the dog on the way.

My point is, if you come across someone with a dog pooing and leaves it behind.
Please don't mump under your breath, tut, wave finger or even run home to come on here and rant in a all knowing way.

Approach them, It maybe someone you can help like me ( if your a dog owner with bags that is )
If it's someone genuinely leaving their poo, then chances are they'll be so ashamed, embarresd or whatever, they'll pick it up.

If you do get faced with an aggressive nature then move on but at least you tried.

Cities in Sweden have dog latrines in all the major parks. Dogs know where they can and can't go and for the most part the latrines are well used. They also get to sniff many different smells and seem to really like it. That said, they do hum a bit (the latrines), but at least you know you can enjoy the park without slipping in a turd or sitting down under a tree only to discover you now stink of dog pish.

I'd like to have seen you do that :hihi:

Was it a protest? :D

:hihi: LOL - I really must wean myself off Pedigree Chum. Actually, the pavements were swept recently, so the dog poo count has fallen, but it's amazing how quickly they're reappearing. I'm surprised the council aren't enforcing the 'fouling rules', as they'd make a tidy packet (....there's a joke in there somewhere).

I"m sorry to say I chickened out,and left it there.

:hihi: that reminds me the other week i was walking to the shop without my dog and a young chav lad with a staffie was walking on the opposite side of the road, i saw the dog starting to squat and the chav started looking shifty, trying to pull the dog away as if to show me it wasn't his dog doing it :loopy: anyway he began to walk off to i shouted 'excuse me' he said 'yes' so i passed him one of the many nappy bags i constantly have stuffed in my pocket, the look on his face said it all but he went back and picked it up :hihi:

There are 'scum' in every city, i have seen filthy individuals using the streets as a toilet in most of the towns and cities i have worked in.
Including a woman of at least 40yrs of age squatting behind a taxi on Mathew st in Liverpool one Saturday evening (not my favorite memory of the place)
Also a group of 5 lads in Bristol urinating against the club wall they were hoping to get in to, whilst in the queue.

There is little difference between 'scum' who foul the streets and 'scum' who deliberately allow their dogs to foul the streets in my opinion.

did the taxi still have the wheels attached :hihi:

As I explained to someone else who asked the same thing, because it adds weight to my observations and brings home just how bad the problem is, rather than saying 'a lot'. I hadn't intended to count it as my job for the day!

:!: UPDATE:!: Just walked the same route, and there are now several 'NO FOULING' signs sprayed on the pavement, and it's been swept again! Maybe someone from the council has been reading this

Whoever did it, let's be thankful and try to keep it clear from now on. I imagine the stencils have been rendered with washable paint that'll fade in 6 months. though hopefully the message will stay in people's minds forever.
