My dog eats his own mess, has done for a long time now, he's fed twice a day, sometimes he doesn't do it for weeks then I'll catch him.
Whats with him????????
:help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:
our dog does this too, ive been told that its because they are lacking in a certain nutrient or something which apparently the dog thinks it can gain from eating its mess. dont know how true this is tho
only time my dog did this was when she had pup's..obviously she used to clean there mess when ever they did it.!
i never got used to it..used to make me gip big time.!!!!

Ok..im thinking about it..and ready to gip....nooooooooooo
Alfie still does this - he is 9 months.
He now only does it at home which is progress.
We have tried Deter tablets which did not work. The only way we have found to stop him is to watch him in the garden and praise him for going and give him treats for not eating it then clean up straight away or he will go back to it.
Hopefully we will break the habit soon.
One of my dogs does this :gag:
I read somewhere or was told its because they want more attention, not sure if this is right  He bloody gets enough!! It can't make them feel well can it. It might be to make them sick, they might prefer it to grass :gag:
Moonbird 03-03-2007, 11:58 Sometimes dogs do this because they have got into trouble for messing in the house or wrong place, its a quick way to remove the evidence then it becomes a behavior that they get used to.
Perhaps you could try taking him out on lead and make sure he doesn't get the chance to eat it, praise him lots when he poos but has walked away, hope you get this sorted its a pretty yukky habit :hihi: .
Saying all that one of my dogs is obsessed with eating cat poo omg that makes me feel ill, and her breath after is :gag: :loopy:
Lindseyw 03-03-2007, 12:51 My little one does this & it is something we are going to talk to Kim Hunt about when she gets here today so i will let you know !
BlackVelvet 03-03-2007, 13:40 we recently discussed this on a breed forum. It can indicate a vit B deficiency. worth having a chat with your vet for advice on this. Or it could be a habit/vice hes got into, which requires re-training and addressing why he does it
thank you everyone there is some very useful info, i think i'll talk to the vet aswell.....relieve to hear that other dogs do this too, thought i was the only one with a dirty sod for a dog:gag:
Brude only does it if he's decided we should have cleaned up by now
Sometimes he moves his from his 'pen' and plonks it in 'our' part of the garden
I'd make sure you aren't giving him any reason to feel it's his job to do the cleaning up, and remember when they do this it's usually because they are trying to be 'clean' and not 'dirty'
I'd check out what BlackVelvet said to be on the safe side though
We think Alfie learnt it from his mother as he was with her longer than I would have liked and mothers clean up after their pups and so the pups copy.
Lilly has eaten other dogs poo when we take her for a walk. We have only caught her doing it twice but it's revolting! I have no idea why she does it, maybe because she LOVES chocolate and the colour is obviously ..... well, you get the idea.
Lindseyw 03-03-2007, 18:35 Ok so advise I have been given is this.
It is usally caused by one of the below or a combination of both.
1) Diet - If said doggie is eating 'rubbish' they cannot digest this, i.e ceaser, pedigree chum, Bakers - you get the idea - look on the pack - if it has anything less than 20% meat content then it is 'rubbish' - most of them, after examining in the supermarket only have 4% - the remaining 96% is cereal or 'dirivitives' this is the rest of the animal - eyes, ofal, bones, skin etc.
The said doggie is not able to digest this very well, therefore when they poo alot of the above is in the poo, so they eat it again because it still smells of the 'food'.
Try a little 'live' yoghurt in a morning to help the digestive system along.
2) Habit - You will have to train them out of it with usual training methods.
Gonna have to stop reading this thread....makes wanna gip all the time...lol..

hennypenny 03-03-2007, 23:08 We have had to put the cats litter tray up on a platform, not because the dog was eating it, but she liked to get right inside the tray and roll in it

Hi,
So they eat their pooh because it smells of the food they eat?
The first time I ever caught my dog (sherman) eating his pooh was when he had been to the vets for his injections, they gave us a welcome pack with dry pedigree chum puppy food in. We fed him it n then caught him eating his pooh after that :gag: He hadn't done it before eating that :o :gag:
Maybe I should try giving him a desert..He might not be so greedy then ;)
add pineapple to your dogs food its safe and after eating it they wont eat the poo it produces, it does work. anna.x.
