it's a sequencer, keyboard, virtual mixer and effects unit all in one.

i stayed in bed for years on end writing test-card music.....and some of the results can be heard on my new test-card music website.

I bought my first guitar in 1983 and immediately begun writing songs. You only need three chords to write a decent song and I used to just strum around and form a song which would be captured on a cassette recorder. I then started to write stuff down and have written and recorded ever since.

I'm more lyrical than musical when it comes to song writing so in the early days it would usually be my lyrics onto my fellow guitarist's chords and occasionally I'd add a middle eight or suggest a key change or something. But I always wrote on my own as well and these were my real personal songs with lyrics first to which I added sparse chords, usually open chords which simply created a backdrop to my lyrics (an example: one entire song utilises the chords E / F#MAJ7 (open E) / A (open E) and B (open E)).

I've written and recorded, mostly onto CD, around 40 of my own songs. The vast majority of these are solo recordings where I play all the instruments although there are one or two with Jes, the guy I learned guitar with in 1983/4 with whom I wrote and recorded on a number of occasions.

Despite playing guitar since then, I drummed in a number of groups between 1985 - 1998 the most notable gig being the Rock Garden, Convent Garden in 1993.

I play the odd solo gig these days. I intend to record some of my older stuff when we finally move house and who knows, maybe write a new song or two?

Ten years ago or so I could knock out 2 or 3 songs a day. These days I'm lucky if I can manage 1 every 2 or 3 years...

Yes. I make music by applying friction to strings with my right hand, and varying the length of said strings with my left hand. Does this count?

My old band had our Peel Session repeated on Marc Riley's show on BBC6Music last night so I'm due a lovely PRS cheque

I write the lyrics for our band, and occasionally hum a tune in my head which the guitarist turns into a song.
