Soft Cell singer Marc Almond is fighting for his life after a serious motorcycle crash.

The pop star is understood to have been riding pillion when the bike was in collision with a car.

He was reportedly thrown on to the road, suffering serious head injuries.

Both Almond, 48, and the rider, who also suffered severe injuries, are in hospital after the crash near Cannon Street station in central London.

Soft Cell scored a No.1 hit in 1981 with Tainted Love.

A spokesman for City of London Police said: "We can confirm that at about 4pm on Sunday there was a serious collision between a car and a motorcycle at the junction of Cannon Street and New Change in the City of London.

"Both the motorcycle rider and the pillion passenger are in hospital. The rider has severe injuries and the pillion passenger is critical.

"City of London Police are investigating the collision.

"We can confirm that one of the parties was Soft Cell's Marc Almond."

The vehicles were a Suzuki bike and a Vauxhall car, the spokesman added. He could give no information about Almond's injuries.

as someone whose teenage years were the 70's and early 80's Marc's music with his band Soft cell, were a HUGE part of my "youth", and hold great memories for me. (some of them melacholy, others not)

I am really glad to hear he's improving.

Hmmm! He made some cracking songs? :? ... Tainted Love... Is that the only song people can remember? I agree it was a classic tho!

I liked Bronski Beats (Jimmy Summerville (<< spelling?) & Marc Almond)... 'I Feel Love'... That was another classic

Not forgetting 'Somethings gotta hold of my Heart'... Gene Pitney & Marc Almond :)

I was totally gutted to hear about his accident. I have been a huge fan of his since my teens and think he is a very talented man. I have loads of his solo stuff and really like the diversity of his music.

Lets hope he makes a full recovery. Fingers crossed!

"Torch" & "Where The Heart Is" are excellent single, as was the album "Non Stop Erotic Caberet".

I too am glad he is showing signs of improvement.

The original was not by a band, but by Gloria Jones.

She later became Marc Bolan's girlfriend and in fact was driving the mini when Marc cashed his chips.

Dave Ball and A N Other formed The Grid, who got to No. 1 with "Swamp Thing".

"Dance" record with a banjo. Think it was about 1996.
