View Full Version : Carbon monoxide detectors lauradrury 02-03-2007, 11:50 i bought a detector this morning and while it is plugged in it makes a slight buzzing sound is this normal dont want it to be faulty??????? Space 02-03-2007, 12:02 I wouldn't have thought it normal. Does it sound like a quiet static noise? roobarbpie 02-03-2007, 12:03 Mine doesn't buzz - so that doesn't sound right. I'd take it back. :) lauradrury 02-03-2007, 12:04 yeah static buzz really quiet lauradrury 02-03-2007, 12:07 its a plug in one by the way that cud explain y it buzzes what u think???????? BasilRathbon 02-03-2007, 12:09 You didn't buy it from Sven Books, did you? lauradrury 02-03-2007, 12:12 whats that? its a pro team one from ebay why??????? lauradrury 02-03-2007, 14:34 what was wrong with the sven books one???????? i have been in contact with seller and he says as long as it displays zero and set up went ahead ok the detector is working correctly. does anyone own a plug in one???????? mel77 02-03-2007, 14:40 I leant a hard lesson about carbon monoxide detectors.....i had carbon monoxide poisoning back in May so i got myself some Co detectors....anyway last week it went off, intermittant beeping (3 beeps) so i followed the instructions on the detector and rang Transco, they said it wasnt normal and went through all the gas insturctions and sent someone round.... Transco "Its the battery love....faulty" me "how can you be so sure?" Transco "well im not but it shouldnt beep intermittently and i doubt very much you have Co poisoning or it would go off constantly" ME "can you check the appliance for me?" (it was above the gas fire) i expalined what had happened in the past etc etc Transco "well i can do a visual check but we cant test for Co as its not in our job description" Me "well i could do a visual check its not that hard!?" Transco Looks at the fire.....hmmmm don't know" Gives me a sodding yellow 'appliance not safe' sticker and says don't use it until it's been checked by a corgi bloke Then takes the battery out of the detector and says Transco "it won't beeep now will it!" (once you take the battery out it's defunk, ie guaranteed for 5 years as long as you dont tamper with it) I have put in a complaint about this...:o :o My point is.....having this bloomin detectors is an expensive waste of time.... ok it's meant to be an early warning indicator but what happens if it went off a couple of times over a year? You'd have to have it checked by a Cogri bloke which costs everytime, just to make sure as it wouldn't be worth the risk of leaving it and saying oh it's the battery. As i'm paranoid about co monoxide anyway :( i don't see the benifit of having the detectors cos Tracsco can't do anything anyway so you have to pay out for peace of mind... I'm furious with Transco and written to Offcom to ask why Transco engineers in this day and age can't test for Carbon monoxide when they are a 'make safe' and 'first point of call' service!!?  I've had my detector replaced by British Gas as it's in warrenty and i've taken the gas fire out of the living room and will be replacing it with an electric one as i can;t cope with the worry and constant 'what if' neeeeeeeeeek 02-03-2007, 15:09 It's might have a small transformer in it if it's a mains one. Mine is mains and does not buzz. If you can hear it in the room when the TV is off I would send it back. I am sure it wil work ok but if it was mine it would drive me nuts. lauradrury 02-03-2007, 15:18 ok thanks it not loud enough to annoy u? u have to really listen im sure its ok neeeeeeeeeek 02-03-2007, 15:22 Transformers do hum a bit, you could always test it by sabotaging your boiler or running a pipe from the vent into your lounge. :hihi: lauradrury 02-03-2007, 15:25 hmmmmmmmmmmmmm mayb not Bonny 02-03-2007, 20:55 I have British Gas cover all my appliances and they do an annual check as part of the service. Anyway this year when the guy did the check he asked if I wanted a Carbon Monoxide Detector, as if I bought one when he was already at the house it was cheaper than buying one and getting them to fit it as there'd be a 'call out' charge. So, agreed to have one. We've got gas appliances in three rooms in the house so I asked if we needed one detector for the whole house or should we have one for each room. He just said "it's up to you" I told him I just wanted to make sure I was safe - but I don't know what the 'range' is etc and would appreciate his advice on what is appropriate. He again said, "well it's up to you". So, we just have the one, but I still don't know if it's sufficient or not??? So, long way of saying it, but surely if British Gas are supposed to be the 'experts' why can't they do the testing and give proper advice? mel77 02-03-2007, 21:15 surely if British Gas are supposed to be the 'experts' why can't they do the testing and give proper advice? I don't think any of them know what they are doing with co mon detectors to be honest, they all have differing answers and knowlegde, i've found it to be a pointless exersice getting any of them, mainly Transco and Birtish Gas to comit to any firm answers....!:( |
