View Full Version : Knots in yarn :(
Lucy-Lastic 02-03-2007, 10:32 I decided last night to cast on Dew in the Tapestry yarn that I already have - its going pretty well and Ive done 1.5 repeats but my it is a very slippy yarn (Ive been doing it on metal needles as the bamboo 5mm ones havent arrived and am having trouble keeping it under control):o Going great guns and its looking good then oh whats this ...a knot and its lost its nice varigated effect at the join - its just a swap from one colour to the other:( I undo the knot and knit both ends in to find the join is at a place where I need to drop stitches so its not a nice join now:( Im not even sure if the knot joined the right bits of yarn together - and you know how anal I am about those things:hihi:
Some of you have used Tapestry before - Im guessing there is a repeat in the colour stripes - could this knot have mucked up the pattern? Another Q when you join a new ball in do you find the right place in the next ball - or just join it?
I think you should complain to the manufacturer. Someone once told me to do that. If we don't complain and accept knots, then they get away with it! We have a right to knot free yarn!!
Sos, can't help you with the stripey bit! :suspect: :hihi:

Here's (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f40/ppn_2204/Tapestry.jpg) the pattern repeat on my semi-frogged bit of Tapestry knitting. It's a wide piece, so the stripes are very noticeable.
I haven't had to join in a new ball, but I'd be tempted to find the right place in the yarn, depending on what the colour repeats looked like in the pattern I was knitting.
knitbird 02-03-2007, 17:43 I've made the Dew scarf in Tapestry, and had a knot in one of the balls. I joined the yarn in as usual at the end of the row, and it didn't mess the stripes at all. Dew is quite a textured pattern; change in colour is less noticeable than in stockinette stitch. It should look absolutely fine!

Did you knit it for JLP btw?? :suspect: Im wondering whether to tink back as the join was mid row and redo it at the end. BTW I cant decide which is the right side - Ill pop some piccies up later for a straw poll:D
The 2nd one i'm doing in Tapestry doesn't seem as good as the first. It seems thinner than the first lot. I had a knot in it too and it just didn't look right so i've undone it all again:rolleyes:

:( Jules how did you join the yarn btw - I tried felting and it didnt want to go?
I just carried on as i usually do, but like I said, I've undone the whole thing now cos I wasn't happy with it

curlywurly 03-03-2007, 09:24 Hello!
I haven't posted on here in a while but still read and catch up on the knitting world!! Thought I'd share this with you, I've been working on a project that uses tapestry, and lo and behold, I came to a knot, so decided to check the rest of the ball and there were 2 more knots!! :o And where one knot was, the colours blatantly didn't match so had to scrap that ball and use another, which again had another knot in!!

That really isn't good enough. Knots are an irritant anyway, but in a self-patterning yarn they're incredibly annoying.
I haven't come across a knot in my Tapestry yet (about half way through the first ball), but I shall see what happens and report back as the Branching Out progresses. I wonder if it could be a batch problem? Have you all bought your Tapestry fairly recently and in and around Sheffield? It could be worth investigating with the manufacturer.
I bought both mine from JL in Sheffiled, one lot (the first branching out) before Christmas and the other 2 weeks ago:rolleyes:
Lucy-Lastic 03-03-2007, 12:30 Mine was JLP Sheffield Pot Pourri lot number 010B1
curlywurly 03-03-2007, 13:35 I too have been using Pot Pourri purchased from JL. I have emailed the manufacturors but yet to receive a response. Like you said it could be a faulty batch, but still it is very disappointing to finds knots!!
curlywurly 03-03-2007, 13:38 Purchased in January too.
Lucy-Lastic 03-03-2007, 13:47 Yup mine was bought in January:( Rowan seem to be especially bad at having knots:suspect:
I bought mine well before Christmas (October, I think, though it might be earlier) in Nottingham John Lewis. It'll be interesting to see whether I get any knots :suspect: .
I did read somewhere a while ago that yarn manufacturers believe that up to 3 joins in a ball of yarn is acceptable - I shall go and have a look around for where I might have seen it.
