View Full Version : DVD rental/council rant
Far be it from me to start such a trivial thread when many more serious issues to discuss, but where on earth are you supposed to rend dvds/vids when you live in the city centre?
After 18 months in Leeds have just moved back to Sheffield City Centre. Previously lived on Devonshire Green and used to rend vids from the shop on the road that has now been closed off because of Forum extension. Been there tonight and it's turned into a non-dvd/vid renting Spar!!!
Surely with the new city centre population there must be a captive market? (note to self: possible business opportunity???)
And that leads me to another question. Has the increase in city centre living led to an increase in support services? Eg new doctors surgeries etc?????? As a former employee of Sheffield Social Services I know GPs in the city centre are V stretched dealing with homeless, drug addicts, street drinkers and asylum seekers. I am not in any way trying to lay blame at any of these groups of the community, but would like to raise the question as to whether developers take this into consideration, or indeed the council when granting planning permission,
As I said, I used to work for the council and know the best way to try and address this, ie write to local councillor. It might not sound revolutionary, but believe me, as a former council officer, I know when a councillor gets on your case, you jump!!!!!!! Otherwise there's a chance the big D (disciplinary) comes into play.
Results depend on who the councillor is tho. You either need a big cheese in the ruling party, or a loud voice in the opposition.
kittykat 17-07-2003, 22:19 have you tried blockbuster on eccy road?
i might be totally wrong but im sure there was a Blockbuster Rental Vending machine in the NUS Nelson Mandela building
like i say, i could have drempt it
Tony Ruscoe 18-07-2003, 07:49 You weren't dreaming this time RPG - I can confirm it's there!
Tom in Bradway 18-07-2003, 12:00 The Central Library on Surrey St has a reasonable selection of DVD's, Vids and CD's to rent. Alot better value than Blockbuster too, bout £2.50 a week or something. Admittedly, they don't have ALL the latest releases. Still worth popping in though!
"Eccy road" and the NMB aren't quite as close to Devonshire Green as the Spar shop was  Call me lazy, but most films released these days aren't worth walking that far to rent out :P
alchresearch 18-07-2003, 18:01 You're best off finding a contact who can do you copies for a couple of quid, although I certainly don't condone it. ;-)
DaBouncer 18-07-2003, 18:10 Why not rent via the web?
Or just use iMesh or Kazaa... not that I condone that behaviour... ;)
Contact for copies eh... hmmmmm
alchresearch 18-07-2003, 18:29 With DVD writers (for PCs) at only £99 and blank DVD discs at just 75 PENCE each, I think the DVD movie industry is going to have a Napster / Mp3 style battle on their hands very very shortly.
DaBouncer 18-07-2003, 18:33 I reckon it's already started mate!
supremeedito 17-09-2003, 13:12 Forget Blockbuster-type services, I use an online DVD rental service based in Sheffield called DVD Showtime. You pay a monthly sub for a given number of disks at any one time and all postage and packaging is including.
They have a great range and you can swap each disk five or six times a month - post office allowing.
My membership costs £18 a month for 3 DVDs at a time. If I watch them fairly promptly and drop them in the post (pre-paid) asap then I can get up to 18 different disks a month. They all have plenty of TV series so I get to catch up with Farscape etc which is often on when I am on campus.
I reckon it is much better value than shop-based service and I don't have to drag my arse to Eccy Road every day.
Classic Rock 17-09-2003, 14:33 London Road has a largish video hiring shop. Think they do DVDs too.

Yes, it's already happening. DVD software allows you to copy an original easy enough and dead easy to rip it with. I've also seen 3 DVD quality new films fitted onto 1 DVD
im trying dvdsontap.com , postage paid and u get unlimited # of DVD's for £8 each month, only one at a time mind. Thy have a 14/30 free day trial if u wanna give it a try.
I have been wondering exactly the same thing as blondee...
So thought I would bring this topic back to peoples attention.
Where can I rent a dvd without walking miles?
I don't have a car and I don't want to pay a monthly supscription. The library idea is good, but not if it's 8pm on a sunday night and you decide to chill out with pizza and film.
Copying dvds from friends is fine, but can't always plan ahead.
So since this topis was last discussed, has anything changed does anyone know?!
Surely there must be somewhere round West Street that rents films?!
Blockbuster on ecclesall road is quite a long way, I wouldnt walk there in the dark, and is a hastle to take it back too.
Jackson's by the Arts Tower has a really dismal selection.
Any ideas?!

do they send your top choices out on the list? or is it hit and miss?
alchresearch 23-01-2005, 12:55 I rent mine online. I think it's much better value for money than a traditional walk-in video shop and there's a much bigger choice of classic films.
The only drawback is that you might not get the latest releases first, but I've put a new film on my selection a month or two before release and in the case of two films, got them on the Saturday before the release date of Monday!

Yes, Apollo Video on London Road do DVD's, but not in the same quantity as Blockbuster, it's a fairly small shop and they don't have many copies of each DVD. It is cheap and friendly though, unlike Blockbuster.
Yeah I noticed that too - used to go to Choices in Hillsborough when I lived there, and still do if I can be bothered to drive there, but usually my boyfriend just gets me films off the internet or borrowed from mates.
I think the Vlockbuster machines in both Sheffield Union and Hallam Union have been taken away in the last couple of months - well they're not where they used to be anyway!

You're paying a lot for your DVD writer there, try £38 instead..

I think you should have checked the date of my post - writers were that price back in July 2003!
