View Full Version : The state of sheffield clubbing Pt 2
discodown 02-03-2007, 01:22 AM Its actually looking really healthy. :D
Theres loads of great things going on, lots of music genres being represented, there are venues trying new stuff and re-inventing themselves (uniq i'm looking at you!) and just generally I think the future looks bright.
The only little moan I do have is that it would be nice to see people like fatboy slim and morillo and sasha, tenaglia the genuine top drawer superstar legendary dj's but in general the quality is extremely high. That goes for the crowds as well as the dj's.
Things to look forward to this year would include the re-launch of matrix and keep an eye on void and shhh! because who knows what will happen.
To conclude, its not absolutely perfect but it is pretty damn good.
(who thought i was going to moan?!)
Agent Gypo 02-03-2007, 04:08 AM Hmmm, not sure I agree.
Some of the underground nights have interesting things happening.
I haven't been to Uniq yet so I can't comment on what they're doing. Strangely, I don't think any of my mates have been there yet either, but I'm sure I'll get along sooner or later.
I think I might actually vomit if Fatboy Slim or Sasha played in Sheffield. I had a great conversation with someone recently who described Fatboy Slim as 't'watstep'.
I'd love to see Aphex Twin in Sheffield. Sadly I can't afford to book him, and even if I could the chances of him being arsed to play are slim. I doubt whether there's a promoter in this city who could get him to play.
Us Clunge idiots do have some special things lined up though.... you'll see....

Thats right discodown  we have gradually turned the venue around with the incredible Urban Gorilla on board and also Tech noir, morning glory, creme de la creme and diasha and lots more in the pipeline too!!! so watch this space!! we are gradually putting UNIQ on the map!!
I had a great conversation with someone recently who described Fatboy Slim as 't'watstep'.
lol! I know he can't mix to save his life, last time I saw him at Glasto he messed up most mixes and that was on The Other Stage - I stopped for about 30 mins before leaving for something better.
BRINGITON 02-03-2007, 02:08 PM lol! I know he can't mix to save his life.
Agreed, saw him at Basics attempting a 'proper' house set (as opposed to a Students greatest hits set) and it was awful, wor lass could have done better.
Agreed Steve that there is somewhat of a recovery going on but slowly does it. Re the legends thing (in which Fatboy would not come close in my book, legends represent and change things, he's just popular) - I'm not sure what benefit seeing big names out would do except attract a bigger, more mainstream crowd, I'm not keen personally. That said we've had Derrick May a few weeks ago and have Sneak tomorrow so that's proper legends in my eyes. We've also had Ralph Lawson at UG lately - played the first ever record at Basics (and will prob play the last) so that's a legend right there for me!
I don't see why having 'big' names would define us any better. That said, everyone needs to experience a Tenaglia 12hr set at least once in their life, it will change you (nudge, nudge Plug!)

The above mentioned Superstar DJs have priced themselves out of the market and at the other end of the equation when people question paying a fiver or £6 to get into a venue then dont expect things to change too quickly...
Unless they drop their fees or people understand that it actually cost pounds and pence to put on an event then...dont hold your breath mate

True, and how many times have there been ace acts on for nobody to turn up? No wonder only the massive venues take the risk, the apathy in Sheffield's clubbing scene doesn't make it worthwhile for the smaller guys.

ARF! brilliant.
Dirtbag that I am, I must confess to liking some of fatboy slim's stuff and owning a few of his early records, but over the years I have come to find something extremely shallow and grating about both the man and his music.
He comes from the same school of ripping things off and adding a half-arsed breakbeat (and possibly an irritating looped vocal) as other tw@ts like Moby.
Off topic, sorry. :D
scottf 02-03-2007, 04:19 PM Its a well know fact that he gets terrible stage fright (same as michael stipe from REM) and get through a bottle of vodka even before he gets on stage- could explain a few things.
green 04-03-2007, 04:08 AM i have to say ive seen the fatboy several times over the years, last time at glastonbury when he was the radio 1 stage straight after the cuban bros, and he played an absolute blinder.....in fact i dont ever remember a bad set....
i think people read too much in the papers about people and let this pepper their mind.......dont !
Carborundum 04-03-2007, 11:56 AM Sheffield clubbing is crap at the moment ... I never thought I would hear myself saying it but theres actually more going on in the Casbah these nights :)
discodown 04-03-2007, 10:14 PM so in general then people aren't as positive about this as me?!
Pipine 04-03-2007, 11:59 PM I'm hoping a trip to Shhh / Void is going to remind me whats good about clubbing cos its been a long time, several years, since I had proper good night out. I've had bits of nights that I've enjoyed but nothing along the lines of nights I used to love at the arches, remedy, scuba etc which were amazing from start to finish.. I find the crowds aren't as friendly and the music is too patchy recently.. I'm stood around waiting for a decent tune to come on or running away from some hard and heavy ear splitting track thats been put on. The atmosphere is never quite there.
I've resorted to indie nites instead.. at least you can guarentee you'll want to dance all nite. Which is a shame cos I love dance music.
Maybe I'm just going to the wrong nites..
Stormy 05-03-2007, 02:11 AM so in general then people aren't as positive about this as me?!
Im positive about it. There are loads of good nights in sheffield at the moment. While we may not be getting the likes of Trentmoller who is playing in Leeds on Friday (grrr) theres certainly a good selection of nights and DJs. It kinda fell a bit flat when Fez and Pravda became Vibe but its picking up again. At least with small underground nights you cant accuse them of selling out which has happened to other big clubs around the country.
grownsy 05-03-2007, 04:05 AM take this how you want to take it, went to plug last night, loved Sneaks set,had a wicked time, shame the place had a few too many bell ends in there...... please please re-open kingdom and a place that people who like speed garage can go to and not complain in the bogs that the place isnt playing speed garage!!
oh, be the way, this isnt a dig at speed garage or people who listen to it...
Sneak was awesome

I've noticed that about plug since kingdom shut. Plug is immense when they close the Live and Earth Room off from Neutral (.Zero) and have seperate events (Like the Zogg nights and when Mason played Twisted--how GOOD was that night) but when its all one big club its not so good, too many pissheads wanting a fight bringing the atmosphere down. Come on Plug lets have more seperate closed off events! And book Mason again while you're at it, best night ive ever had at Plug!

By the way those people do not read flyers. They probably thought it was reflective night.
...... And book Mason again while you're at it, best night ive ever had at Plug!
He's back in June, and we have him sorted for 1 more date in 2007. That literally was one of the best sets in Neutral for a long time..... the boy has talent!
Agent Gypo 05-03-2007, 04:48 PM I'm hopefully having my first visit to Club Shhh soon. Last time I went to that venue was for the Headcharge birthday, which Dirty Cheese were at.

Saffy 07-03-2007, 07:28 AM I've been totally spoiled by Southport I'm afraid ..
Delboy71 07-03-2007, 12:52 PM I've been totally spoiled by Southport I'm afraid ..
Get yourself to Creamfields this year Saffy. And you Steve!!
bladesufc1 07-03-2007, 01:01 PM Get yourself to Creamfields this year Saffy. And you Steve!!
hear hear!! EVERY CREAMFIELDS KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER, and eddie helliwell, gets better and better each year there, he normaly plays late in the morning, but his tent is full to the top AWSOME
Stormy 07-03-2007, 01:17 PM Aye Creamfields 06 was excellent but I heard GG was even better so we're off there this year. No line up confirmed yet but suffice to say, I CANNOT WAIT!!!
fnkysknky 07-03-2007, 02:00 PM I'm really happy with Sheffield clubbing at the moment. Looking through the listings there's stuff I want to go to every weekend which is a sign of times being good. A few years ago I used to see stuff once or twice a month I actually wanted to be at as opposed to going out for the sake of it :)
JerryJackson 07-03-2007, 02:29 PM hear hear!! EVERY CREAMFIELDS KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER, and eddie helliwell, gets better and better each year there, he normaly plays late in the morning, but his tent is full to the top AWSOME
Creamfields is awfull!!! I've been twice now and on both occasions its been crap! Thousands of scallys in tracksuits wanting to beat you up!! Many elements of past events have also been poorly organised. Global Gathering is better and i see Gatecrasher are doing another Summer Sound System this year which will be cool, and its in Leeds.
The better of all festivals which unfort doesnt run anymore was Homelands.

There wern't as many scallies last year, the change of venue has helped. The only gripe I had was the crap soundystems in certain tents, namely the Chibuku Tent which was far too quiet and the GOODGREEF arena which had an echo......
Damon 07-03-2007, 03:06 PM ^ Clubbing is for dark sweaty rooms, not fields and tents and daylight. And I speak as a veteran of Tribal Gathering's glory days of yore...
I've never escaped that creeping feeling of wrongness whenever I've spent a night partying on mud and grass.
JerryJackson 07-03-2007, 03:08 PM Yeah i've heard better reviews from the new place, but i think i've been put off for life now. I tend not to do the big events anymore, mainly cos im getting to old!! ha ha i'm tempted by this years summer sound system tho!

wow.. i've never seen 1 bit of trouble, global is good, i must admit
fnkysknky 07-03-2007, 03:31 PM I just hope the supposed line up I've seen for Summer Sound System isn't correct, it's bordering on awful if you like house.
grownsy 07-03-2007, 03:37 PM I just hope the supposed line up I've seen for Summer Sound System isn't correct, it's bordering on awful if you like house.
spill!! the beans
fnkysknky 07-03-2007, 04:00 PM Don't know how correct it is (if at all) but.....
http://www.efestivals.co.uk/festivals/lineups.php?hits_seen=0&Year=2007&FestID=1834
Supposedly Mr Scruff is doing a 6hr set, which normally would be ok but at a festival??? Can't be serious.
JerryJackson 07-03-2007, 04:15 PM Maybe i wont be going!! ha ha
tommyB 07-03-2007, 04:32 PM For me, the resurgence is mainly due to the quality smaller nights that are popping up around the city at the moment.
Of recent you have nights like Club Pony, Natural Shy, Kabal, Wall of Balls, C90, Technoir that are giving a fresh attitude towards the scene here. It must be hard because of the lack of venues around but they all seem to be doing what they can with what they've got.
And for whoever it was that was on about Aphex Twin, there's a certain rumour going around that someone in Sheffield has indeed managed to book him but when and who remains a mystery!! :suspect:
Solomon1 07-03-2007, 04:38 PM when Mason played Twisted--how GOOD was that night........best night ive ever had at Plug!
absolutely agree stormy!....was like being in ibiza all over again
still missing scuba though.......
dj4321 07-03-2007, 04:42 PM I've been totally spoiled by Southport I'm afraid ..
If you love Southport, you may want to check out upstairs lounge bar. From soulful house to disco to funk to nu-soul. friday and saturday nights.
Solomon1 07-03-2007, 04:52 PM I'm hopefully having my first visit to Club Shhh soon. Last time I went to that venue was for the Headcharge birthday, which Dirty Cheese were at.
where's shhh?
fnkysknky 07-03-2007, 05:02 PM where's shhh?
Down at the Wicker Arches, it's not the old Arches though - other side of road.
bladesufc1 07-03-2007, 05:09 PM absolutely agree stormy!....was like being in ibiza all over again

imagematters 07-03-2007, 11:02 PM Hi Pipine yes sheffield music scene does seem to be taking a turn for the better. We have had the pleasure of hosting over 30 events at Shhhh and just three in Void but last weeks Off The Rails was an awsome event, and this week at Shhhh we have be -nice (take a hint from the title) with Nik Denton AJ Cammilla Danny K Jody Schoffield, Carl The Don plus more 12 hours of clubbing heaven all for a fiver beat that you uptown boys and girls. lol
imagematters 07-03-2007, 11:18 PM Club Shhhh is at 130 The Wicker just before you get to the wicker arches on the right hand side of the road. Club Void is just past Shhhh on the right hand side where the old Mazda dealership was it is owned by a pair of Lovely people called Carl and Tracey, who are trying really hard to inject some quality into thw sheffield music scene, make sure you get down there and show some support, if you want the scene to grow and prosper, All the pennies they gat from running their nights go towards the restoration of the building, which they hope to develop into a musical hub for the Sheffield music scene with recording studios , sound stage web radio etc etc as well as having 5 rooms with capacity from 200, 150 ,500, 1200,and 1800 now that is a super club Lol
Solomon1 08-03-2007, 07:28 PM Damien is still alive, he's working on tunes at moment, and his website will be fully working soon
