View Full Version : Dave Godin LornaR 18-10-2004, 09:15 Dave Godin died peacefully in his sleep after a long illness on Friday 15th October. Damon 18-10-2004, 09:30 Oh...... that's sad. Very sad. I know Dave's lifelong love was soul music and he had much to do with that scene, but for me he was the vision behind the Anvil cinema during the eighties. And that place helped introduce me to a great deal of world cinema I wouldn't otherwise have seen, and Sheffield would have been rather less interesting during those grey recession years. In fact, Sheffield generally would have been a duller place without him. Trekker 18-10-2004, 09:39 Sad indeed. R.I.P. Chris M 18-10-2004, 13:17 Sad news , Never met Dave but loved his column in the old Blues and Soul Magazine. He brought a touch of class to the Soul Scene. Went down to London in the seventies to buy some records from his shop and have a chat. But would you believe it there was a note pinned on the door saying that the shop had closed early to enable Dave to travel up to Blackpool. I was amazed when he turned up in Sheffield to engage in his other great passion - films. A guy worth listening to - whatever the subject. Chris M 18-10-2004, 13:29 Lorna , Has the local press covered the news yet ? BoroughGal 18-10-2004, 15:29 Threads could do with merging..? http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19182 Chris M 21-10-2004, 15:20 I would hope there is a tribute to Dave in the Telegraph on Friday. So far no mention in the Star ?? Yet the Guardian and Independent carry tributes. Cheers Chris Mo 21-10-2004, 15:20 Anybody heard anything about funeral arrangements? Dug 21-10-2004, 15:27 His obituary was in yesterday's Independent. kolla 21-10-2004, 16:11 Dave's funeral will take place at 3.40 pm on Thursday 28th Oct at Rotherham Crematorium, Ridgeway, East Herringthorpe Rotherham, S65 3NN. There is limited parking inside the crematorium grounds, so it would be appreciated if you could park your cars on the road outside, unless you have special needs. The funeral directors are Co-operative Funeral Directors, Clyde Villas, Doncaster Rd, Rotherham, S65 2DA. Tel 01709 828818 who will advise as to flowers, if you would like to send any. Donations are still welcome to The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth, Devon, EX10 0NU . Cheques payable to The Elisabeth Svendsen Trust For Children And Donkeys. There will be a celebratory dance at the Hellaby Hall Hotel, Old Hellaby Lane, Near Rotherham, S66 8FN from 6pm until approximately 12am. Deep Soul music will be played from 6-8pm in particular. A vegetarian and vegan buffet will be available from 8pm. Hellaby Hall is about half a mile to the east of junction 1 on the M18 on the road to Maltby/Doncaster, it's on the left hand side. The M18 branches off the M1 at junction 32. . The practicalities over, there has been overwhelming outpouring of affection and respect for this amazing man. Dave often quoted that what lives on after we are gone is love and that's been proved in the last few days. He was always sorry to be missing his own funeral, he suspected it would be a joyous occasion. We'll have to make sure we prove him right. There are two stunning obituaries in the Guardian and Independent, which we have put on the 6ts website (http://www.6ts.info). The 100 + tributes to Dave in the Book Of Condolence on the site and tributes from David Nathan and pals are something else too. Please take time to read them at your leisure at http://www.6ts.info . Kind Regards, Kolla (on behalf of Ady Croasdell) Mo 21-10-2004, 17:55 Kolla, thanks very much for that information. I find it sad and really quite strange that the Star hasn't covered the item. theimposter 21-10-2004, 18:43 There is an article in The Star tonight about Dave Godin's passing. I was quite shocked to hear about it. It seems fairly mundane but I once saw him in Pizza Hut on High Street on Christmas Eve a few years back. His Deep Soul CD compilations are an essential for anybody's music collection. Chris M 22-10-2004, 07:35 This morning's Sheffield Telegraph has almost a full page tribute to Dave. kolla 22-10-2004, 15:16 Mo, Dave's family and close friends have said everyone who knew Dave, either as a personal friend, or indeed through his journalism, are all welcome to join them in celebrating his life next Thursday. I think it is going to be an incredibly emotional day. Just reading through the Book of Condolence online (http://pub18.bravenet.com/guestbook/1467978738) shows with out doubt what an amazing person he was and what a tremendous legacy he has left us. |
