My memories of school dinners at middle school are ones that still make feel a bit iffy! The playground at Shiregreen middle were next to the kitchens and I can smell the aroma of overcooked carrots and cabbage mingled in with the sickly sweetness of something with jam in and custard even now :gag: :gag: :gag: The food at Comp' were quite good as a rule though :)

Had a spat of taking packed lunches -'just cus my mates did'....but went back to school lunches.

Most of my favs already listed - spam fritters, cheese and onion flan and on Friday...Fish and Chips - that was the day we all used to bolt down the food in the hope of getting some seconds.

Only one I can recall I was not too fond of was the Irish Stew.

As for the puds - Jam Sponge and Custard - has to be No 1 for me

i used to love school dinners.

i remember the cheese croquets...they were my fav, also remember the sausage pie...that was lovley too. cheese flan also went down well.

does any one else remember the pastry and mincemeat they used to serve up?

i used to love the deserts mainly cos i used to like the "skin" that would top the custard and loved the wagon wheels mentioned above. australian crunch was on the menu in my secondery school and even though i went to the shops for lunch would always pop into dinner hall to buy an austrailian crunch...yummy

You mean you had a choice?? - when I was at school (mind you this was in teh 50's and 60's) you ate what you were given. If you didnt like it there were usually two outcomes - depending on the teacher on 'lunch duty' :

1. You left your food and went hungry
2. You left your food but was then given a reprimand/clip round the ear for being so ungrateful - especially when there were 'so many starving children elswhere in the world'

I certainly remember at junior school the headmaster taking the last option - woe betide any kid who left any food on his plate - depending on his mood you would either get a fairly stiff telling off but kept qiuet-ish....or... if he was in a bad mood - the whole school would know how ungrateful you were because of the 'starving kids etc etc'

Many was the time I ate some food (cannot remember what it was now) with my nose pinched between my nose like some foul medicine

I hate to admit it now but I used to nick rolls from the canteen each lunch (had a routine well worked out and never got caught!), so I could afford fags with my dinner money to sneak up the playing field with! They were always delicious on home made bread and I feel quite guilty for it now, being a reformed character!

I remember that shepherds pie was my favourite. We had half moon shaped spam fritters with tomato sauce that was warm, like tomato soup. I hated it when school mash had lumps in though. I also hated it when it was new potatoes too. I only really liked school roast potatoes. When they occasionally gave us chips they were limp and soggy.

I remember when it was "meat" I have no idea what meat it was, probably lamb, but it was always fatty.

At secondary school after a few years they brought in a cafeteria type choice system. Basically this was the same old school dinners, but you could have a salad instead. There was a choice of pudding, stodge and custard, or cheese and biscuits or yogurt. I cant say I really enjoyed them, but I tried sandwiches and soon got sick of those so went back to dinners.

I have the cheese flan one.

For the pastry

8oz Plain flour
2oz lard, 2oz butter

(rub together to form breadcrumb texture, add a few spoons of water and mix to form dough)

For the flan bit

Small onion chopped
3 eggs
half pint of milk
loads of cheese (grated) preferably mature red cheddar.

Roll out pasty and line a flan dish, part bake (either prick pastry with fork or fill with baking parchment and hard peas)
Add onion to part baked pastry
Add cheese until nearly full
Combine egg and milk and add to dish
Decorate with tomatoes (optional)
Baked in hot oven (180) for about 30 minutes

Serve with chips and beans

My school used to do 'Cheese & Potato Pie'. It was mashed potato and grated cheese mixed together and put in a pie dish.
About 2 fork-fulls of it would fill you up and start coming out of your nose.
We still use it as a metaphor for when something sticks in your throat and makes you retch.

I dont ever recall school dinners being 'Yummy'. Worst of all, I had this horrible teacher who took great pleasure volunteering for guard duty in the dinner hall each and every dinnertime and she wouldnt let you leave until you finished every last crumb off your plate. She was evil... I am surprised I dont have some sort of eating issues/disorder now.

Yeah! Cheese flan!!! It was made in a massive steel container and if you were dead lucky you'd get a corner bit with two sides of pastry on. Mmmmmm.

Oh my fave was that custard/Manchester tart with coconut in. Christ that was gooooood....

We never had croquettes though - i first had them when I was a student - Tesco used to do them.

This was all only at primary mind, secondary school dinners were spew apart from the sandwiches and those 3 inch thick pizzas.

I thought at first some of you folk were joking when you said you liked the school dinners. Then, I read that you were offered scrumptious morsels like cheese croquettes, ice cream with butterscotch sauce, and angel delight. In my day (now doesn't that date me?) at High Storrs GS for boys, we sat at long tables, 14 to a table, with the table prefects at the head of the table dishing out the food. Table prefects were coveted positions because on the rare occasion that something tasty showed up (roast potatoes with grated cheese stands out) they could help themselves to an extra portion. I speak from experience. But, prunes with watery custard, sago pudding, grissly stew and peas that we used to call "bullets" and flick at one another, were some of the staples. One day my pals and I decided to seek respite from this unappetizing fare and we were spotted wandering around the streets eating fish and chips. Well, of course, the headmaster called us into his office and gave us each six of the best for tarnishing the image of the school. After all, shouldn't the punishment fit the crime?
