Sheffield castle was where the Castle market used to be. When Castle market was pulled down, they found the ruins of Sheffield castle. As far as i was aware, the ruins were catalouged and then re-covered over.
I am sure that someone will be along soon who knows more on the subject. Maybe stwar would have had more luck posting this in the History and Ex pats forum.

As far as I know, Sheffield Castle (remains of) are about a third of a mile from the station and not visible to the public. (Except by appointment!)

The site at 'Manor' was just a fortified hunting lodge and manor house, not a castle.

Yup, that's right. The remains of the castle are underneath the Castle Market Hall (hence the name. The remains are still acessable via the basement but not generally open to the public.

Sheffield Castle itsself was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army in the English civil war.

Hmm, travelling north to York may have taken you through Connisborough and past Connisborough castle.
Was this thing far from Sheffield station? If not, it was probably a disused railway abutment :suspect:

During an archeological dig in the area infront of the Ibis Hotel about two years ago, Sheffield Castle (hitherto thought to be relatively small even in its heyday) was revealed to have been about the 13th biggest in England - so I've read.

That might not sound too impressive, but baring in mind how many big castles (like Sheffiled) have since been destroyed, this means that the Castle was bigger than the massive Warwick Castle which pulls in crowds of American tourists today.

The castle was rebuilt several times, before eventually being destroyed after the Civil War for supporting the royalists. The original mott and bailey castle was built to guard a site on the Don where the river was shallow enough to ford - right by the confluence with the Sheaf. So my school history teacher told us.

Because its walls stretched so far, it might be that it reached down to the station area, but I doubt it. Though I'm no expert.

If you can see remains excavated by the station, it's much more likely to be those of a few metal trades forges which existed in the area until the station was built. One of these was the Pond Forge, which gave the nearby leisure centre its name.

Are you talking about the deep excavation in front of the station where the car park used to be? I saw that there was some kind of old stone wall down there, but not sure what it was. Although, I know it wasn't the castle as I knew the location to that was some distance from the station.

To save you reading the above link, here's beastieboy's contribution that sums it up quite nicely:

It's the remains of an old dam built to use the power of the river for an old iron works, there was another dam further along. The dam itself is under Sheaf house and it ran down Sheaf square to Pond forge. It pre-dates the station and the only building from it's time is the Howard pub which the good old council wanted to knock down in this redevelopment too
