Anyone involved in the NWOBHM bands from Sheffield in the early 80's?
Great times and over a quarter of a century ago now.

Just been thinking of the names of the local bands back then.

geddes axe, alyx, heritage, renegade, haze, fixer, tokyo, zayus, dedringer, seventh son, overide, panza division (rokka), prisoner (bitter sweet), fallen angel, limelight, big house USA and def leppard of course.

I knew most of them. I spent my youth trying to recapture Rock instead of embracing the Pistols, Stranglers and the Clash. Oh how it could have been so different.

Hello Phil,

Ah, yes jumpers for goalpost and all that stuff. Gigs at the Penguin over at Shiregreen. Gigs at the Wapentake when every other band in the area turned up to slag off whoever was playing... the politics between the bands. I'm sure theres more bands and venues I've forgotten if anyone wants to add to the list.

Who was that bloke who used to claim he was "better than David Coverdale"? He was in a band that played the Marples a lot (all of those bands did though). Many memories of bands going to see other bands just to slag them off! I'm sure that still happens, though. I also seem to remember the uniform of hooped t-shirts, Lewis bike jackets, RIDICULOUSLY tight stretch jeans and Hi Tecs with massive tongues (throw in a studded or bullet belt to finish)!

Ahh, the good old days of style...:hihi:

I know who you mean Maxfacta. He once told me in the Wapentake he considered himself the 3rd best rock singer in the world. He did name 1st and 2nd but I can't remember who he said now, but he was deadly serious.

I do remember his name, and the band but all I'm prepared to say is his first name was Andy...Same Geezer??? Big egos were a big part the scene back then in this genre as were the outragous clothing. This was the early 80's don't forget and I remember the 'new romantics' and the 'electronica crews' wearing equally disturbing attire and big hairstyles. Do you remember the NWOBHM local fanzine 'Skullcrusher' compiled by a singer in another band called Gary?...nice bloke he was. He was later in (a short lived?) project with Baz, the guitarist from Geddes Axe and Baby Tuckoo called Swampwalk...an hybrid band combining new metal and punk.

He had a seriously fit girlfriend though. I could never understand what she saw in him.

Hello Phil,

Unless you were plug ugly, you did have a pretty girlfriend if you were in a band. Same thing still applies at all levels doesn't it as many girls are attracted to muso's? I remember the stretch lycra trousers (if you can call them trousers) that many of the girls back then would pour themself into and the skimpy little tops they wore. Don't forget there were no 'soft porn' music videos on MTV back then...like there is now. There was always an abundance of rock chicks that used to wander around the rock night down at the Roxy virtually naked.

A few of them mentioned here:- http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=90681

Haze - I think are still going under various guises

Fixer - Turned into Fireflight and then imploded after the whole band was sacked one by one by the manager. I believe the guitarist (Steve) can still occasionally be seen playing under the name of "Groucho" around Chesterfield.

Def Leppard - Vanished without trace :hihi: :hihi:

Hello Till Man,

Yes, I remember him wearing the plastic glasses and moustache and doing the groucho marks impressions when he was with Fixer.

I think you'll find that Def Leppard are still massive in the US. I also remember Leppard being the most hated of the Sheffield bands because of their 'standoffish attitude', but in retrospect it was more likely jealousy with them getting the huge deal with phonogram.

Yep, that's him, still doing it.

I don't remember Leppard being particularly hated. The general opinion seemed to be (as I remember) that Joe had a huge ego and not much singing ability, but the rest of the guys were ok. Pete (Willis) didn't really do their publicity much of a favour in his "I'm drunk and I can fight anyone because I may be a midget but I have a huge minder with me" phase, but I guess we are all older and wiser now.

Oh, and Panzer Division turned into the Lonely Hearts, I gather Glen is still playing.

Another one for this list is/was Nicky Harrison's band Valhalla. I know they morphed into Haalem and the Schaeffer but have no idea after that.

Zoso (or anyone else) - I'm looking for anyone that was in (or knows someone that was in) Fallen Angel. Any clues?

PS: Had forgotten all about Groucho - memories eh!

I remember Fixer. For part of '78, my mate Mick used to drum for them. I was supposedly their engineer. Rehearsal room was somewhere just off Bramall lane. Fella called Jim on bass and vocals, and yes, Steve on lead guitar. 'Bright and Rosy' was their most commercial offering, closely followed by 'Elephants' - anyone remember that? Was a heavy, but commercial number. 'Bright and Rosy' featured slide; was the only time I saw Steve play a Strat. Very much a Les Paul user.
