Its good to be back chatting to the gr8 folk of sheffield! artisan 26-02-2007, 19:28 Cape Town was the first place I ever saw outside of Europe. After an 11 day run from Rotterdam, I went up on deck and there was Table Mountain, dirrectly opposite us. It is a sight I will never forget. That and the system of government. Everywhere else we went in the world a crane was used to lift the massive bunkering pipes into the bunkering station. In SA it was team of 12 coolies, an A frame and a white overseer. To see bars and shops etc, with 'Whites only' and 'Blacks only' entrances was strange indeed. We once arrived, and had on board some high ranking Indian young women, they were relations of top Orient Line owners I believe. The athuorities tried to insist that they go through customs with the Bangladeshi and Pakistani crew. (A physical inspection of forearms was required in those days) The Captain refused to let this happen, and would not bring the ship in. (Idont what his bargaining tool was, as we had no oil left, and needed 6000 tonnes to get to Perth) After some bargaining lasting some hours, a seperate inspection was held for the girls. It shows the stupidity of the apartheid system, they were still not allowed to be inspected with the rest of the passengers, as they were 'coloured' The fact that in money terms they could probably have bought the ship and half of CapeTown made no differnce. |
