During the 60's in Sheffield we used to listen to these stations because the alternitive was the light program and the home service. It was always a topic of conversation at school. The reason for this post is I have just found a map as a teenager the stations I used to listen to I had an ex communications receiver ex mod bought from the ex army stors at West Bar. Who can remember 208 with Horace Bachelor and the word Keynsham

There was a pirate station that came on to the scene a bit later on called radio geronimo. it played all the 'underground' music. I remember sending off a postal order to an address in Harley st london hoping to get a T shirt with the stations name on. I never received the T shirt and not long afterwards the station went off the air but at the time, as you say, they were a lot more exciting than the beeb.

Hey that takes me back Horace Bachelor and his famous impladraw method.
Anyone know what he was on about?:loopy:

It was the "Horace Batchelor infra red draw method" for predicting the football results as a means to winning the football pools (Littlewooods, Vernons, Zetters etc.)

All an absolute load of b******s of course and if it was broadcast in this day and age then I have no doubt that good old Horace would rapidly become 'Batchelor Behind Bars', the thieving, swindling, God forsaken piece of s**t. :suspect: :nono: :gag:

I remember Radio Luxemburg on 208 meters medium wave, the top 20.
Radio Scarborough was my favourite in the late 60's.

Used to get radio Caroline in North Wales and radio London when living in Henley. Prior to the pirates, radio Luxembourg was the only place to go. Jack Jackson and Pete Murray used to host the Decca label broadcasts. Who used to host the HMV and Capitol shows I cant remember. There was another smaller label who had just 1 show a week and had just 1 or was it 2 stars who made it to the charts. Was it Oriole? Pye-Nixa had a show. I think Lonnie Donegan was with them.

Radio Caroline, began broadcasting at Easter 1964 from a ship anchored just outside UK territorial waters. Below are a some links to interesting sites.
There's a form of Caroline broadcasting today,a tribute site to em all and on the third link you can download sound files of the first show on Radio Caroline - Very First Weekend - Easter 1964 - Simon Dee - Christopher Moore

Hi MikeG I also used to listen to Radio London, they used to call it the Big L.

From memory (and it is over 40 years ago and the memory starts to fade) Tony Blackburn and Ed Stewpot were the DJs and Stuart Henry who's catch frase was "My Friends" I am sure he also was with Radio London.

Good memories in those days life was so easy and we all got on with each other the only issues we had to deal with was arguments about music and our parents when we wanted to stay out after 11 O Clock.

In the summer of 1966 I was camping with a friend at Skipsea, near Bridlington. We were on my small motorbike and one day we went to Bridlington. The boat trips were advertising trips around Radio 270 (I think). We thought that was a cheap trip as it was near Scarborough or Whitby,so we paid our money.Suckers it was in Bridlington Bay for repairs!!!! It later came into Bridlington harbour and somebody climbed the very high mast to do repairs.I remember the crew getting very upset with a passing speedboat as it caused the ship to sway violently.

Both Caroline and Big L are now broadcasting on the Sky Digital system if anyone wants to here them again.
My favourite was from the early 70's by the name of Radio Nordsee International ( RNI ). Now there was a proper pop pirate. Jammed, bombed, set on fire, and it still stayed on air until the Dutch passed their version of the Marine Broadcasting Act.
I've a picture of their ship the MEBO 2 as my wallpaper on the laptop.
Oh, what memories !!!!!

Thought I would resurrect this thread as someone on the forum asked me about some music played as an infill on RNI but I can't remember who it was. However, I think I have found what it was, better late than never. It's by Burt Baccarach and called South American Getaway. It can be downloaded from a Dutch site, PM me for details. Seasons greetings to all free radio listeners.

davep Thanks for your reply this was a period when we could listen to the current music that the state would not provided.
From the sixties when they started it gave us a great chance to listen to new bands and then we woulg go out and buy the records.
270,London,Caroline etc.
I remember having an old ex MOD Communications reciever tunned in with a map on the wall with each offshore station marked.
I had a Grundig 7 inch reel to reel tape recorder with the mike taped to the speaker so I could record.
If I remember Radio Londons charts started at 4, 270 was 6 and Luxomburgh was 10. Oh happy days

Which Radio Station was Stuart Henry on before he went th Radio 1 was it Radio London.
His line was "Well my Friends" and if I remember on Radio 1 he had a slot on Saturday morning called " She's Leaving Home" and he played the Beatles track of the same.

There was also Simon Bates who come fron the Pirate Stations to Radio 1 and had a slot called "My Tune" who else remembers

Radio Luxembourg is still going strong and you can listen live via the Internet - see http://www.radioluxembourg.co.uk/cms/index.php

In the 1950s it wasn't a "pirate" station as it was quite legal; it was just in another country where the UK authorities had no jurisdiction. Quiz shows such as "Double Your Money" and "Take Your Pick" started on Radio Luxembourg and I well remember the whole family gathering round the elderly Pye radio in its walnut cabinet.

Horace Batchelor's "infra draw method" was of course as effective as any other "method" for winning the pools. He employed a small army of clerks filling in coupons with random selections on behalf of a vast number of clients. Anyone who won was expected (though not legally obliged) to give Horace a share in the winnings, and enough did this to make Horace a wealthy old con-artist. He could never have got away with advertising his "method" in the UK, but fortunately for him Radio Luxembourg accepted his advertising money. Born in 1898 the son of a Bristol telegraphist Herbert Batchelor and his wife Blanch, Horace died in January 1977.

Anyone who would like to hear Horace's marketing patter, and the announcer spelling out K-E-Y-N-S-H-A-M can do via a link on this web page: http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/memories/snippets/snippets16.htm

Hmmmm. Didn't the line go "Keynsham - that's K-E-Y-N (pause)-S-H-AM - Keynsham, Bristol"? in which case was Sandie being ironic or just not "from the sixties"?

If your input is for spelling, then so be it.

If your input is for spelling, then so be it.

Not at all: I was simply recalling the delivery of the famous line and my reference to irony was because everyone could probably spell Keynsham as a result of it. I just assumed that's what had prompted your comment and I was teasing you in a completely friendly way.

The Captain of radio Caroline was a Dutchman and I believe the ship came to grief in a storm. He got a job as manager of a boat building firm in Brightlingsea Essex. I got to know him because I built a catamaran in one of the hangers. He committed suicide by riding his motorbike into a telephone box, he was doing 55 MPH.

Radio Luxembourg first of all used to fade in and out was most infuriating, it was fine when Horace was on! Then came the best Caroline - Johnnie Walker in all his glory fabulous radio voice still to this day and who could forget Emporer Roscoe - great music. Enjoyed the film based on it.

Radio Luxembourg, Caroline and London...all absolutely first class radio stations. Used to listen to all of them on my Ferguson portable which incidentally I still have although it no longer works. Better reception on the Pirate staions than on Luxembourg.
