I'm looking for new job opportunities in Leeds city centre (as there are few opportunities for town planning consultants in sheffield)

Is this a viable option? i don't really want to move to Leeds as i'm quite happy here so I was wondering how long the journey takes you...

i anticipate a start time (i.e at work by) of 9am and finish at 5.30 say

the other alternative is manchester but i imagine that this would be a longer journey?

hiya
i live in sheffield but work in leeds. the charity i work for also has offices in Manchester which I work in from time to time.
I go by car because I need to trek about leeds and have to do childcare run back in sheffield. I leave home just before 7 and am usually at my desk for 8 (Im through the city centre). I leave at 4 and am home for 5. BUT if you do the rush hour run it can take up to 1hr 45 - 2 hours!
Ive done the manchester run (city centre) by car and its never taken less than 2 hours - train takes 1 hr so if youre working central Manc thats much better. It always takes an age to get home from manchester too.
Hope that helps

Central Manchester is a lot easier to get to and from by train than Leeds is. To get into Manchester for 9:00 you can get the 7.36 service which usually arrives before 8.40. The trains to Leeds are a bit funnier in the way they run, some taking just under an hour, some taking over an hour and thirty minutes. If you are within 5 minutes of the station you can get the 07:51 and get into Leeds for 8:50. If not you have to get one at 7:15 and get into Leeds at 8:27.

Coming back is worse from Leeds too. Trains from Manchester to Sheffield are roughly every 20 minutes in the rush hour. I used to get the 17.40 and so got back into Sheffield at 18:40. If you finish at 17:30 that means you have to get the 17:40 so you don't get back until after 19:00.

I've done both commutes many times, I can definitely say that I much preferred travelling to Manchester. That may not be the case for everyone though.

i think this comes down to if youre travelling by train or car
Leeds better by car if you avoid rush hour - manchester bad anytime
Manchester better by train

I did this for about 6 months, travelling by train. I'd have to get up at 06:00 to get to work for 09:30, and would leave at 17:30 to get home at about 20:00. Unfortunately, the buses and trains don't link up too well, so much of that time was spent simply waiting...

I commute by car everyday which i don't mind but i work shifts so not much on the roads

If i had to do it by train, i would get another job as i sometimes work twelve hour shifts and with commuting times, it would be more like a 16 hour shift

if you are travelling by local train to l**ds  there are 2 trains an hour (not including the Virgin train) the slowtrain leaves about 10-past the hour (about 8 mins past, IIRC) and that one stops at all points  between Sheff, Barnsley, Wakefield and l**ds. It's a long drag, taking an hour and a half, often more, to get between Sheff' and l**ds.

the fast train leaves sheffield at 10-to the hour, (51 mins past) and has only three stops, (Meadow-hell, Barnsley, and Wakefield Kirkgate) before arriving in l**ds. It takes about 55 mins, to an hour. It's much better, rather than hanging around travelling for an extra half-hour.
