what happened? It seemed to go downhill when they moved from the forum to the devonshire street shop, always seemed a bit high street in there.

The rents must be sky high for those units, Alley closed down last week as well as it's Chapel walk store.

I don't think its the rent entirely thats a problem, its not muc different to other stores in sheffield.
(about 20k/yr, similar unit for example in eccesall rd is 15-20k/yr)

*Sarky mode*
The problem is that division street is full up with skint wannabes that just look and don't buy.
*Sarky mode off*

How many shops have closed on divi street recently?

Most people just look at the £140 jumper to see whats in and the hit TK max or M&S and get the same thing for £35.

aye, apparently too high rent verses shop income.
a real shame, a super nice scene and everything around sumo really, plus they had some real nice clobber in there.

"Too high rent against shop income" - basically it means the owners of the shop didn't run the business right.

It's sad when any business goes belly up but part of running a business is making sure that you can afford the cost of doing business.

SUMO? I must of missed that one. And I go down there irregularly.

Presumably they were selling more than those thong things Sumo Wrestlers wear.

Hair Varnish and buckets of throwing salt?

Bit of a limited market in Sheffield.

I am still wondering why you would pay £140 for a jumper if you can find the same for alot less somewhere else.

venger is baffled by that one :gag:

Fashon can be a very confusing.

It's a shame Sumo has gone, there arn't many original clothes shops in Sheffield. Hopefully they will re-open in Leeds or Manchester.

Could it be that the gear they were selling was way over-priced? Didn't bother me when I shopped there, but the prices on Sheffield's so-called 'golden quarter mile' are taking the p iss a little.

Everyone knows the mark up is ridiculous. I think Sumo's problem was their market was skaters. When skater-chic was 'in', more people were shopping there. However, now that day has been and gone, the only people still dressing in this way are the kids pelting about on skateboards, and they're not likely to have that kind of disposable income.

With regards to the other shops you mentioned, they were also a bit keen with the old price gun.

Personally I miss the scene around Devonshire Street when the forum first opened. Now I think that whole area has disappeared up its own ar sehole.

Shame. I think Sheffield is losing its identity a little.

A friend of a friend of the guy who ran Sumo said that the rates doubled in the last year and they just couldn't afford to stay.

Hey, they might get a cheaper unit in Meadowhall ?

Long live city centre shopping !
