View Full Version : Fox Hagg/Redmires Walk - Sunday 4th March

Following heavy debate on Sunday's Bradford Dale walk (well, alright, a chinwag over a pint 'n' sarnie!), Taxman has suggested the following walk for Sunday 4th March. Some of the group has done this walk before, and it was quite popular.

A circular walk around Fox Hagg, Wyming Brook, Headstone and Redmires, starting at 11.00 am.

Car drivers can park in the car park at the Sportsman Inn on Redmires Road (maybe pop into the pub first to ask them if it's OK to park there!).

For public transport users, Taxman suggests you take the 51 to the Lodge Moor terminus, and the walk begins on the opposite side of the road about 50 yards up from the bus stop.

Should take about 4 hours, but can be made longer with extra turns. I would imagine there will be well-earned refreshment at the Sportsman afterwards for those who have worked up a thirst :)

I`m ok for this one, in fact will someone tell the Sportsman to make sure they`ve got some of their fabulous meat and tatie pie left for when we get back there please! (See Rivelin Valley walk 17 Feb)
If anybody living on my route there wants a lift, just let me know. I`ll be getting there via Grenoside, Wadsley Bridge, Hillsborough, Walkley, Crookes.

Sorry, I don't know what came over me. I'll try and exercise more self-control in the future.

Anyway, are all the walks on Sundays now?

No offence taken Tricky, just cost you a pint, and a half a lager and lime at Wednesdays meet to prevent the slandered parties from taking out litigation on you thats all!

Regarding the recent spate of Sunday walks......We had one on a Saturday a few weeks ago for a change, specifically with the non-Sunday people in mind, but guess what? Yep, just the normal Sunday crowd turned up? In fact, there were 2 people who would have come on that walk had it been held on a Sunday, but couldn`t because it took place on the Saturday!
And of the regulars who come most weeks, Sunday is by far the most convenient day it seems. Maybe you`d like to arrange one yourself in a few weeks on a Saturday, and maybe we`ll do 2 that weekend!

Didn't have you down as a lager and lime man Scubz. You're right of course, I should have a turn at organising a walk - something to discuss on Wednesday over a lager and lime perhaps.

Back on subject - I can recommend this walk, it's a good'n.

Hi Kitty

Its a very informal walking group, no rules and no set plans apart from the starting time and place, and no walk leader as such.
On this walk, as you can see, it starts at the Sportsman Pub at Lodge Moor, and obviously finishes there.
We dont walk very fast, and we stop all the time to take in the views, look at birds/animals whatever. There are usually one or two camera people present too, who linger a lot taking piccies!
Some people take food with them, some get something at either a cafe if there is one, or at a pub, and some people dont seem to eat at all (not me hehe)
There is a wide range of ages from 20`s to late 60`s, there are some couples occasionally go, and some people take their dogs.
Hope this helps, if there`s anything specific you want to know, pm me. Would be really nice if you could make it to a walk, its always nice to have new people

Had Shower before I went - Got a Shower when I got there - Had to have a Shower when I got back to wash all the splashed up mud off.
But I had a very well cooked hot meal at the Sportsman at Lodge Moor and would recommend it to everyone. A really well cooked hot meal.
See you all at Wentworth next week and hopefully with a few more faces.

A rather wet day was had by the hardcore walkers - Scubz (thanks for lift back !), taxman (cheers for showing us where we were going !), ItIsNow (hope the hair wasnt ruined by the rain !) and Albert (hope you're Ok after the fall !).

It started off not too bad, path was a bit slippery then rain came and cameras were put away and rain capes donned. After traversing paths that no sane mountain goat would attempt, we went over a hill we had been on before few weeks ago and then down beside the streams and boulders. Was nice despite the rain !

The weather wasnt kind to us and even the hardcore have their limits when there is a pub nearby :P So we cut the walk in half and doubled back but went along a different path, passing insane mountain bikers that descended down madly steep hills without a care in the world :loopy:

Went to the pub via roads lined with walls with cut out sections in (bit odd) and dried out a bit after that

Not many photos due to weather etc... have a look in the Fox Hagg part of the Walks section at :

Hope to see loads of people next week - should be a good one :)

Enjoyed a nice walk, with good company despite the weather.
So nice to be with easy-going people who can be easily persuaded to "chuck the towel in" and head for a pub when the weather dictates this is what we ought to do!
I can recommend the carvery at the Sportsman Inn at Lodge Moor to anybody, but if you`re going to park there before you go for a walk, make sure you tell the rottweiler who`s on patrol duty first!

Glad u like 'em :)

Foolow was fab that day - just me, SHSheff and A N Other - huge grey clouds looming on horizon (see 2 shots of farmhouse with red shutters in the 'Buildings and Walls' gallery) yet sunny enough to get the pic of the Well Dressing and other places. Never seen them b4 and they were fab

Thanks for showing your concern but after having had that meal I'd forgotten all about it. It is just a pity that the weather changed and we could not complete the set route but there is always another day.
Thanks for the pictures.
