Is anything gonna happen with that old building?
I drove past it yesterday. It seems to substantial to be left to rot, although I suspect that's what will happen. There's already broken windows

The old school is in the hands of the council and despite many requests as to what is to become of the school nothing has been done. A petition was raised and passed but as always nothing has been done!

Typical. You'd think they would at least board the windows up

Sorry, don't recognise this statement at all. What petition ? As the local councillor who has been working on this I can give you the actual facts. The Ann's Road School building will be auctioned. As this is a Grade 2 listed building, there will be strict conditions on the redevelopment. The proceeds from the sale will go into the schools budget for the rebuilding programme. However, £250,000 of this will go towards youth work in Heeley under the Heeley Vision for Youth programme which I pulled together last year.

If you look at the next edition of Heeley Voice, you will see an article by me explaining how local councillors lobbied to get money back into Heeley, specifically into the Ann's Road Youth Centre.

If there has ever been a petition, neither Heeley Development Trust nor local councillors have ever seen it. You may have seen the consultation document which I took round at last year's Heeley Festival, asking for local views on the future of the building. Nearly everyone voted for the building to be sold and money re-invested into the community, which is exactly what I am doing.

The building has been secured. Part of it is being used by Heeley Development Trust and you wouldn't want them to board up their windows would you ?

Thanks for the explanation, and I for one am placated by your plans. I did dread the building falling into disrepair, but now have hope.
Good luck, and I look forward to reading your article when it it published.

PS The building would make a great recording studio!

Bushbaby. Thanks for a lovely post. It would be great if we could persuade any future developer to provide community facilities like a recording studio. We will be extending the Ann's Road Youth Club, but I don't think it would have the acoustics of the old school building. I will, however, drop a word in the ear of the other Directors of Heeley Development Trust if you think there's a need locally. Let me know.

The overall impression of the old school is not very nice and a concern of some of the parents is that the building will be made inot flats like so many of the old buildings are! More expensive unaffordable living quarters! Any News on the crossing? Ive not heard anything since was told may have to wait another year!

Yes, I do take your point about affordable housing and I'll be doing what I can (within the constraints of Planning Law) to impress upon the planning officers that this is what is needed in Heeley. However, I am well aware that local people are worried about the creep of single persons/student accommodation from the Sheffield United end of Heeley bottom and I'm afraid that this might be construed as affordable housing. It's a fine balance as we have to wait and see what planning applications come in and I think they may be limited by the fact that we have a Grade 2 listed building, with all the restrictions that this brings. I promise you that I'll be watching this every step of the way.

I've just emailed the Road Safety team over the crossing, as the last I heard was exactly what you've heard - that we have to await the outcome of the decision over the Broomhall crossing. As soon as I've had a reply, I'll post here and get back to the brilliant woman who's been talking to me about this very issue for the past few months and who seems, like a lot of you, to be able to bring up a family on her own, get into further education, do voluntary work and campaign all at the same time.

It don't matter who gets the building just as long as it stays up. I'd rather see it being used than un used. I was a pupil in the nursery and infants 30 plus years ago. I remember Miss Bathmaker and I lived on Sturge Street.

There are a few places around Heeley named after people. eg... Olive Grove, Albert Road, Richards Road, Alexandra Road, Edwin Road, Myrtle Road, Spencer Road, Moffat Road, Gerard Street etc, etc...... . Wouldn't mind knowing what the Church is called at the top of Kent road.

Albert I guess is Victoria's husband. Spencer....Frank?

I'm puzzled about Ann because if it was Queen Anne it would have an "e" at the end, but it doesn't - and I don't know of any "Ann"s without the "e" who would merit such a tribute

Some of the roads and streets do have regal names but that dose'nt mean they were named after royalty. Most likely named after councillors or the like. Back then most people had royal names. Many estates have a running theme when it comes to naming the roads and streets. Whats a Sturge ?

I lived on Sturge Street years ago until they knocked it down (Now the upper field on Richards Road). Just wondered what a Sturge was. Carl Sagan is/was an inspiration to all that come/came across him.

Hi Sagan1, Heeley Dev Trust are trying to secure funding to bring the old school buildings back into use as a community hub, there are details of the progress that has been made so far here (http://annsgrovecommunityhub.wordpress.com/).

re photos, have you been in touch with Heeley History Workshop (http://www.oldheeley.org/)?

When is work actually due to start?
As far as I had heard there was £250,000 thrown their way a few years ago which little has been done with and around £700,000 has just been awarded again.
Just wondering when we will see this money being spent on the building.

part of the building has had a new roof & new glass in the windows. the outside areas hace been cleared of debris.

probably not, but where do you think council bonuses and golden handshakes come from.
my gf used to go to anns rd as did her dad and uncle. she still has family living in heely, so we pass quite often and would love to see the building reused. lets hope it dosent turn into another mosk or finishes up like the old picture house where legend has it that as planning permission couldnt be gained for the developers ideas it mysteriously burned to the ground and hey presto, build what you want.

bogwoppit
19-03-2011, 14:55
Yes I agree (not that I have any problem with the mosque).
I too have always lived in Heeley and went to Annes Grove.
I am just conscious that there has been three quarters of a million given towards this project and very little has happened. I think the people of Heeley have a right to know exactly how this money is being spent, and so far I wonder where the 250 thousand that was awarded a couple of years ago has really gone... This is money which is being channelled away from other projects in Heeley so we totally have the right to know that every single penny is being spent on what it should be being spent on.

Hi Bogwoppit

It doesnt look like much is happening with the old buildings at the minute, but you can be assured that it is. I also think a couple of the issues you raise must be based on info from inaccurate sources so I hope this gives you a clearer picture!

The £250K that you refer to was awarded by Sheffield City Council in 2009 as a contribution to the costs of redeveloping the derelict buildings. This funding is dependant on the Trust taking ownership of the site and bringing it back into life as a community hub for the Heeley area. The £250K is still in the hands of the City Council and is expected to be released and spent on the buildings once the ownership is transferred (soon hopefully!)

The work that has taken place so far ( roof repairs, broken windows fixed ) has been done to make the site weather tight and secure after the lead was stripped from the roof a couple of years ago. The costs that have been incurred doing this work have been picked up by the Council directly.

Im not sure about the £700K figure you mentioned, the fundraising target for the whole site is closer to £5million - coming from a number of sources that fund regeneration of listed buildings, enterprise growth etc. None of this funding has been received or spent yet.

With regard to your point that money is being channelled away from other projects in Heeley? The funding that has been identified for the redevelopment work is available for very specific purposes, with specific outcomes. I cant think of another local group delivering a similar project that would miss out because funding has been secured for this redevelopment.

re timescale for start - this should be clearer in the next couple of weeks.

As you know, the buildings are at the heart of this community but are now in terrible condition - the School has played an important role in the history of Heeley for the last 120 years and Im sure you will agree that this is a fantastic opportunity to bring them back into use for the whole community rather than let them decay further!

Hope this helps, I think there will be an event on site soon so it will be a chance to go along and ask any other questions you've got.

Thanks for clearing that up White Horse. My understanding was that there was now no money for the redeveloping plans for the community centre as The school buildings will be providing something similar.
This means we are left without any youth provision for potentially a very long time.
