thank you Hugh, the 5mth old Harry Carter in the 1901 census is my grandfather and I think the Harry Carter in the 1891 census is his father.I am delighted with this information and would love to try and get even further back.Could you give me any pointers as to how you got this information? Thanks again
Kim

hello Kim
The 1901 census is online at http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/. To see the actual image you have to pay, but the information above comes from the free index.
The 1891 census can be viewed at Ancestry (http://www.ancestry.co.uk) but again you have to pay. I used the published transcription by the Sheffield FHS instead.
You can search the 1881 census through the FamilySearch link provided by Retep above.
You can search the GRO indexes for BMDs at FreeBMD (http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl). This is almost complete for 1837-1900. Many of the actual index pages can also be viewed there. You can also view the actual indexes at Ancestry, complete to 1983. You have to register on their site but you don't have to subscribe to see these records.
Looking for the marriage of parents of Mary Jane TRIGG (William John and Emma) at FreeBMD I found the following:
GRO Marriages SEP Qtr 1863 from FreeBMD
TRIGG William John Sheffield 9c 391
BROOMHEAD Mary Ann Sheffield 9c 391
YATES * Sheffield 9c 391
LILLER William James Sheffield 9c 391
except for the early years when there were 4, there are 2 marriages per page and the task is to work out which individuals belong to which couple. In this case the woman * YATES is listed thus because the given name is very difficult to read. From the actual image I believe it is Emma.
You can order marriage and other certificates online at the GRO site (http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/) using the information you get from the indexes at FreeBMD/Ancestry. A marriage certificate should give you the names of the fathers of both the bride and groom which will help you look for the previous generaton in the census and civil registration/parish records.
