View Full Version : Ebuyer.com place in Attercliffe
Does anyone know if Ebuyer.com's place down near the Woodbourn Road tram stop sells to the general public?
My keyboard is knackered you see (I'm on Dad's laptop writing this) so I'm in need of a new one and thought it would be quicker to buy a keyboard direct from their shop than over the net.
So can anyone help? Or does anyone know where-else I can aquire a cheap but reliable keyboard from?
mr craig 15-10-2004, 15:51 I'm pretty sure you can't. I think its just a stock warehouse.
Fantomas 15-10-2004, 15:57 Yeah it's definitely just a warehouse. There's loads of shops around you'll be able to get a decent cheap keyboard from though.

Believe it or not, if that fails, Argos is an option.. Bought a natural style kb from there a couple of years back and it was a good quality one too...

Yeh, if you want stuff from Ebuyer you'll have to get it online. I once stopped in and asked one of their staff and he confirmed this. I was then watched like a hawk by some fat, ageing jobsworth security bloke while I left the building, unchained my bike, got on it and rode away. Just another frustrated wannabe bodyguard most likely. He probably told his mates that he had to wrestle me to the ground and physically remove me from the premises.
Try http://www.tekheads.co.uk/ they have a counter open in the week for pickup.
fredsredhat 15-10-2004, 20:26 the frustrating thing is, the keyboard will probably cost £2. P+P will be about fiver. it'd be cheaper by far to collect but as already said, they wont do it.
My friend had to return some goods to Ebuyer and asked what time he could drop them off at the warehouse as we only lived in Fitzalan Square so it was only a short tram ride away. They told him they had to collect it, which meant he had to wait in all day and the courier never came!

Aladins' Cave might have some in cheap?
I once asked EBuyer if I could collect, due to an urgent deadline. The official reply I got was that they don't have the insurance to provide a collection service / sales desk.
I imagine it's more to do with the fact that it's a warehouse full fo nickable kit that's very easy to sell on in a pub, and they therfore don't want their punters walking around the premises.
Having said that I've heard nothing but good reports about EBuyer - I'm told they're certainly cheaper (especially for components) than a lot of other places in the area. They've also usually got stock where others don't, mainly on end-of-line products.
No, I don't work for them!!
Robbie Loving 16-10-2004, 10:48 also, it may not be at that storage depot, they have 3 different ones round sheffield, where they send stuff out, and some of the stuff comes straight from the manufactures not ebuyer
KangaREW 16-10-2004, 12:03 Tekheads will sell you one over the counter - I usually order stuff online and there's an option in the delivery section to 'pickup' the item. The company doesn't seem to have as much choice on their website as Ebuyer and are generally a little more expensive, but very handy if you need things urgently and cheaper overall for low value items when you don't have to count in the cost of postage.

I've never had any problems with them - sure I've only ordered 1 thing from there - but it worked no problems at all.
Alex
my mate and i deal with ebuyer a bit.. and not much goes wrong.. but if it does the customer service is pap..
so my mate after getting the run around about returning an item decided to drive to the warehouse and make a few demands.....(this may only work if you are a bodybuilder haha). he got it all sorted..
what a good example of how to deal wiv companys.. you follow the rules and you get nothing.. you kick up a fuss and you get sorted. pah!
mega_monty 16-10-2004, 23:37 If you look at the Ebuyer website now, they have now done away with their customer support via telephone, so you cant phone up and rant to them, instead you have to use their e-note service. I know that it used to take ages before your call would be answered by an operator.
Ravenger 17-10-2004, 09:00 I've bought quite a bit from Ebuyer, and their prices are great but postage is a bit steep.
I've had to return a couple of faulty items to them, and they dealt with them fairly quickly. The will refund return postage, but only if you ask, so always ask, and get a reciept from the post office when you send something back to them.
I did ask them once if I could return something personally to garuantee it go there and to save postage, but they refused, which was annoying. It'd have been much easier to drop it off myself.
KangaREW 17-10-2004, 11:20 Return it to the depot, but print out a delivery form from your PC before you go and ask them to sign it as a receipt. Anyone can set up a courier service for themselves, they won't know the difference.

Rich, - there's a component shop in Hillsborough on Taplin Road or Hunter Road, - can't remember which.
They have PS/2 keyboards for about a fiver, USB a little dearer. I bought a basic mouse there a couple of weeks ago for just £3.50 , good quality Digital type.
Just walk up London Road...theres a million and one computer shops on there, and theyll all sell cheap keyboards. Alternatively, go to the computer fair at Don Valley next time its on, you should easily pick one up for less than a fiver.
I actually bought a new keyboard this morning from PC World.
Cost me £44.99 but it was teh only USB keyboard they had in stock, all the others were PS/2 connections :(
Took me ages to get the bloody thing working though, seemed to be some problem with Windows XP that was making it not work.

why do people insist on using pathetic companies like ebuyer, pc world, etc.?

£44.99??? That is an astonishing amount of money to pay for a keyboard!

It's PS/2, but if you've got a PS/1 connection you can get an adaptor for next to nothing (unless you go to PC World, that is) :)

Pathetic is not a term I'd use when describing any company. It's so blanket wool like it's pointless saying it... Specific issues are going to be a lot more relevant and get peoples attention.
So, if you want to go there, in my experience, returns can be a nightmare, pricing fluctuates quite wildly (which can be good and bad) and there's always the whole "delivery only" issue but that's about it...
In terms of price, stock levels, the ratings system and the ability to track where your consignment is.. it's pretty good..
So, professionally speaking, they're pretty reasonable...
Have ordered a lot of kit from ebuyer, a real lot...
Every time anything has gone wrong, they've replaced it no problems. Can't really slag off the postage prices either, unless you order a fiver worth of stuff, in which case of course it's going to be pricy (£8 ish for next day). But when I ordered about 40kg of kit, it was still about £8 for next day (sorry, charged me £1.50 extra coz it included a 19" monitor), so can't complain...
As for Maldonado, well puh-lease, getting a bit "geekier than thou" aren't we? I bet he/she/it doesn't shop at anywhere unless the have the words "tek", or "overclock" in the name. Oh, & going by the deliveries I've seen a few times on London Road, most of the shops there user ebuyer too...

Erm...
1. It's primarily a digital camera supplier
2. It looks so home spun that I would have serious doubts about it's ability to support me in a years time...
3. The computer accessories section is sparse to say the least.
Personally, my initial impression would be one of "steer clear"... which is not to say that the shop/company themselves are bad but that site is not an advert for their products or services.

You have to remember that Ebuyer are geared as a distributor to business and retail trade, and if you use them for personal shopping their returns/credit procedure can seem a little slow.
When I've had faulty stuff from them I've ordered a replacement and sorted the return out later for credit, which is the way most trade and business buyers operate.
You'll always see a fair number of "used" motherboards on Ebuyer...these are returns from personal shoppers who couldn't get them to work, generally because they don't know what they're doing.
Tekheads are pretty good too, I've used them for a few years but I wouldn't describe their returns policy as immaculate.
PCW of course have much higher costs and consequently much higher margins, as well as shareholders and stock market analysts breathing down their necks.
