I've just given my cat a chicken thigh. I presumed hed just leave the bone and gnaw the chicken off it, but the next thing i knew the whole thing was gone!

I feel quite worried now as ive just read you should only give cats raw bones, not COOKED ones as i did, as they can splinter and get stuck in the intestines. :(

Does anyone know what the chances are that this will happen? Would appreciate any advice

Thanks

If he swallowed it whole he should be fine, especially if he's not showing any signs of discomfort now. The splintering is only really likely to happen whilst the bone is being chewed. Is he an indoor or outdoor cat? If he's indoors at least you could keep an eye out to ensure it's 'passed' in the next few days and hasn't got stuck somewhere along the way.

Given the size of it, he couldnt have swallowed it whole. Il do my best to keep an eye on him, although he doesnt like going to the toilet indoors, an is out at the minute. i think il keep him in for a couple of days when he does come in. as far as i could see though he seemed perfectly fine when he ran offf outside...

anyway thanks, hopefully he'll be fine

Keep an eye on him... cats aren't meant to swallow them last thing I heard!

They do splinter whilst being chewed when they're cooked, which is why you shouldn't give them to dogs who just devour every last bit!

Don't panic too much though, I am so careful what I give to my dogs and the amount of times they eaten the bones left over from somebody's KFC when they couldn't be bothered to put it in the bin and have left it in the park instead, they should be dead by now

I'm sure that if my dogs do it, my cats must go out and find things like that too. And cats are so much more careful that they probably chew them into much smaller pieces than dogs that just crunch crunch crunch!

Keep an eye on him but unless he starts to look off colour I really wouldn't panic too much.

hell probly be fine an old lady who lives a few doors down from me always throws left over meat and bones for all the cats(much to my annoyance:mad: )and i always see my cats running off with them in there mouths cats arent as daft as dogs ie they dont gulp food down whole in one go) if it did have a bone lodged it would probly be making a coughing noise now or showing some discomfort.

i wouldnt worry about it:thumbsup:

The advice not to let a cat have chicken bones is only there because there's a risk of problems. It doesn't mean that it's certain to happen.

If he's fine just try to stop it happening again, and if he's not, get him to the vets without delay. That's all you can do- crossed fingers that it's the former.
