View Full Version : What has happened with ASDA off Parkway???

I made a trip to the (So-Called) '24-Hour' Asda on Parkway as ususal this Sunday aftarnoon (Today) to get some essentials, around 4 O'Clock, but although the car-park was relatively full, when I came up to the front doors, I found them shut! I could only find a couple of builders who were doing some work nearby and they 'didn't have a clue' and jsut said that they were repairing 'storm damage' to the building. Has it started temprarily shutting early on sundays or something, because I have been there on previous sundays and it is open officially until 9.59 p.m. To my knowledge, the only time that the place actually shuts is between 10 and 12 Midnight on sundays, which I remember was te case last Summer.

If a so-called '24 Hour' store can't live up to its mark, how do you expect them to keep their customers coming? If it is a 'shortage of staff' (This is one excuse all too prevalent in so many 'early shutting businesses I have come across), I'd be the FIRST person off the mark to volunteer for a night shift 10pm-6am on the tills, stocktaking, or management, etc...

As far as I remember, hours have always been 8am Monday- 10pm Saturday, then 10am-4pm on Sundays, since the law doesn't allow for more opening hours on a Sunday.

I have always been under the impression that asda closed at 4pm on sundays, .... 24 hrs at all other times ... but not, and never has been on sunday

As far as I'm aware they still have to abide by Sunday trading lawsa and therefore can only trade for 6 hours on a Sunday 10 -4

They will then open early tomorrow Morning.

24 hr only means trading laws permitting.

Yep - they are 24 hours from Monday morning until about 10pm on Saturday when they close. Then its 10 - 4 on Sunday.

Unfortunately our still antiquated Sunday trading laws don't allow them to open any more than six hours..

The Sunday Trading Act of 1994 is still in force, despite an attempt by the big supermarkets to challenge it last year. It means that they close at 4.00pm on Sundays.

It would be convinient yes - as the OP has demonstrated today. Personally if I want to go shopping at 5pm on a Sunday I don't know why this shouldn't be allowed in the 21st century, unless of course everyone else is at church...

They HAVE to staff it do they? They aren't told when they take the job?
There are many people who like to work such hours for one reason and another.

So it shuts for around 16 hours out of a week and that's not convenient enough for you ?

why the :loopy: Would you expect to get more - if that's your normal hours of work?

I've never been able to understand why the Spar shops seem to be able to open even on Sunday, Christmas Day and Easter Sunday, when everyone else has to close? Any ideas?

Anti-social hours or even a shift allowance.

The limit is 2,000 square feet, I think. Below that you can do what you like; above it you can only open for six hours on a Sunday, and not at all on Easter Sunday.

Apparently God is only offended by shopping if you do it in a large store :loopy:

why is a sunday night antisocial? you should only get extra if you work over your full time hours - i.e over 40 hours per week

You can though! I've just been to our local co-op and bought a ton of gooey muck (choc ice cream, flumps, cookies, buttons, mousse, cream, flakes) to make a ridiculous pudding with later.

It's nice that all the big shops aren't open as long on one day of the week, makes things more relaxed and gives the day a different, more chilled out feel. :)

I think I'll have to line up a bucket for after it's been eaten. I don't know why I had this urge, I haven't even got a sweet tooth!! It's also going to have diced up chilled Mars Bar in it...the mousse is going to be the 'sauce'.

weenireeni - no, Asda is the last place I'd go on a Sunday, the thought fills me with horror! I avoid shopping on Sundays - at least in big shops. I've just had a nice chilled out time mooching round little shops in Bakewell today. :) It's good that big shops aren't open all day, gives the little ones a chance!

...I'd happily work at all hours on a Sunday night!

I used to work in the warehousing/order picking sector on Sunday evenings until 8pm, and I'm now currently DESPERATE for a job, even though I have applied for OVER 200 FORKLIFT DRIVING/ Order Picking JOBS ALONE and not been able to get one. NOT ONE!

Whatever is the world coming to?????

Well thats one way to graciously admit you're wrong and thank those that have informed you.

If you want to work 24 hours try the NHS, they're usually pretty greatful.

The problem with opening 24 hrs on Sunday isn't just about people working there. It will also generate a lot of traffic from people visiting the store and the extra deliveries needed. People living in the area might like at least part of one day a week when the surrounding roads are a bit quieter. It's a terrible location from a traffic point of view, there seems to be an 'accident' there nearly every week. I use quote marks as most accidents aren't that but are caused by peoples stupidity or carelessness.

Well said Vicki... though to be fair Tyranna's attitude has helpfully provided us with a reason why over 200 job applications have failed.

The Scots making law for Scotland were happy to bring this in. The Scots making law for England won't do so.

Sorry, vicki, I FAIL to understand any of the above.

You are probably fixed up with a job OK -maybe you've worked in the NHS for 40 years or something, so HOW POSIIBLY CAN YOU UNDERSTAND what it is like for a fit, young, talented person like me in my frustration in being unable to find any work!

Sorry, but sometimes others do just post exceedingly unhelpful comments...:hihi:

TRY: "thankyou all for enlightening me to the sunday trading laws"
and you may find the reception a little more welcoming

Is this chip on your shoulder about Asda not flouting sunday trading laws or not having a job?. If you are getting turned down for so many jobs (forklift jobs are not hard to achieve, my OH has been offered everyone hes ever applied for) maybe you should visit a careers consultant. find out what is is thats getting you passed over for jobs.

thanks to the wonderful sunday trading laws i nthe Uk this is the greatest amount of time a '24 hour' shop above a certain ( pretty small, corner shop type ) size can open

24 hours day from monday until Saturday midnght then 6 hours only on sunday

shops beloew a certain size are exempted from the requirements - primarily brought in to allow newsagents and petrol statiosn to remain open on Sunday , although it as with most things is pushed to the limits of the law

i think you are confusing shift premia (aka 'shift allowance' / 'unsocial hours '/ 'special duty payment' ) with overtime

many jobs where there is an element of work beyond 9- 5 monday to friday ( + or - saturday mornings 0800- 1230) include in their contracts some compensation for working outside the agreed 'normal working hours'

working above contracted hours / full time hoursand premium payments for that are a sperate kettle of fish

There should be more ASDA's in Sheffield like Handsworth supercentre. Would be even better if ASDA followed suit and had a selection of small shops like sainsbury's centro etc. It amazes me people who expect to get all their items on the shopping list at 4pm on a Sunday!

One day it will probably possible. Surely this Sunday trading thing won't be as tight at some point in the future as we've obviously advanced from the days of no superstores and no opening at all on Sundays

as an asda employee i can assure you that the asda has always closed at 10pm on saturday and re-opened at 10am till 4pm on sunday for the last 7 years that i have worked there, this is because of sunday trading laws.
