Can anyone recommend a friendly, inexpensive gym for a young fella, with a disability, to visit? This guys lost a lot of weight recently but is still too embarrassed to go to a gym. Which is why he needs to go somewhere with helpful friendly staff who can put him at ease and give him a programme suitable for his ability. It also needs to be fairly cheap as hes not exactly flush!
Thanks :)

Not cheap but the Virgin Gym has great facilities and have seen a few disabled people in there. It must be around 50 quid a month these days

I can recommend Hillsboro Leisure Centre - the staff there are very friendly, will spend time with him and do a programme just for him. When I go there, there is often one woman who has one crutch, and just recently a youngish girl with a disability (I wouldn't like to guess what - no idea!) who attends with her mum. Everyone is very welcome, its a great mix of old and young (I am particularly fond of the older lady who uses the weights machines, with her handbag by her feet!) and as gymmemberships go, its not too expensive. I think their off-peak deal is still £19.99 and for that you can swim and stuff too.
Hope that helps!

I used to go to a gym accross from the walkley cottage pub, used to be called unicorn, but i think its changed is name. I used to pay £180 for the year or if you want to go pay as you go, it was £3 per visit.

another  for virgin. me my partner and all 3 kids are members there, facilities are excellent the people that work there are sound and extremely helpful, they have hoists at the side of the pool to aid disabled members. you probably will pay more than you wanted to but you get what you pay for.

Lots of gyms do 'pay as you go' now which involves paying a small one off fee of a few pounds. I recommend he tries a few out to see if he feels comfortable & then he can always sign up for a monthly membership. A gym can be an intimidating place but there's always people who are just as nervous as he would be. Good Luck
