View Full Version : HELP Intelligent Dog Needing Stimulation
hey guys
my Ridgeback is now 11month almost a year, although he is still only a pup he is quite large and energetic
im having problems in finding 'playmates' large enough to handle this puppy:confused:
he is also really quite intellegent, so i was just wondering if there were any groups or activitys, that he would be able to join in, in sheffield?
he enjoyed a mini assult course at puppy training??
or if anyone has the same problem finding a dog large enough for theirs to play with, to maybe meet and let them go crazy??
Thanks
Sarah
Have you tried looking up the thread about the agility class some of our members go to? :)
agility would be great for him once he turns a year old. Although I'm sure you could start him off now doing the non impact exercises. However, the nearest one I can find (and do go to) is in Wickersley, Rotherham. It's very good though and I own dalmatians, again a very intelligent, but easily distracted breed and my youngster benefits a lot from agility classes.
Also, if you ever fancy getting together let me know and once Takara's got a bit more confidence around dogs, we'd be happy to meet up! She's going through a nervous patch but is usually happy to play with any dog regardless of size/breed.

Sam-sung 24-02-2007, 21:59 Has he tried Sudoku?
Has he tried Sudoku?
good one, couldnt resist that could ya? he he he:D
Are you able to get to Wickersley? It's on Morthern Rd and the trainers compete with their own dogs so they do stretch you! My dog's very good at it even if I'm not!
The handy thing is, whether you want to compete or not, the possibility is always there as they train you with the choice to go onto competition agility.
I would offer a lift but I can only get two people and two dogs in and am still waiting to find out if a friend with a cavalier wants a lift there...If she doesn't, I'd happily offer you a lift if you need it!
that would be great i dont drive? otherwise i have my dad who might take me?
im so unfit id probably die lol
haha! Don't worry - I'm disabled and they teach you the shortest way around the track anyway ;)
There's still a lot running around though... especially if you have a dog that won't move unless you are :suspect:
Brude got a trial run at agility once - but the first section of the course ended in a fence with bunnies on the other side
Well, you an guess can't you?
At least he didn't leap the fence like the dog before :hihi:
haha yes, and bunnies frequent the field where we train and apparently rabbit poo is so much more tasty than anything I have to offer for completing the course
BlackVelvet 25-02-2007, 10:07 Some excellent suggestions put forward already. You could also consider activities like tracking/scentwork, canicross, bikejoring, weightpull etc. not really sure what catagory ridgebacks are (are they working/utility etc?). Maybe a breed club could suggest some breed-orientated activities to stimulate his mind and muscles too. Good luck
:hihi: their original function was hunting lions BV :hihi:
hehe now I'd like to see a club in SY that does that! (well no, I wouldn't but you know what I mean)
Zeus has been to agility with me and the spotty maniac today and really enjoyed it :D
Michelle was incredibly impressed with him (and I think she was impressed with Sazzy69 too!).
He's such a lovely dog! Very bouncy and very big but bless him so well behaved for a pup!
Takara bossed him around quite a bit and poor old Zeus wouldn't get in the car because the bossy cow was in it but after sorting eachother out Takara decided she might be able to 'allow' Zeus to be friends with her and Zeus is just plain terrified of her!
I can honestly say, it's hilarious to see a rhodesian ridgeback so obviously scared of Michelle's little JRT!
BlackVelvet 25-02-2007, 21:39 they are (had to go and look) HOUND group. find yourself a scent tracking group, they can be great fun

Ill look into it, i think he will be great at scent work lol
thanks alot:D
Are they scent or sight hounds though?
If anybody finds a scent tracking group, we expect an invitation btw ;)
I think they used to follow the trails of lions in history so this may mean they're scent.......reading through my book though.
'they are surprisingly agile dogs and have been known to clear a 6ft fence' just a quote from book to show how agile the breed can be.
