View Full Version : Tracing the Revitt family of Stannington
Is there anyoneout there who could help me to trace a member of the Revitt family.
I am looking for the father of William Revitt circa 1780 who was a farmer and landlord of the Crown And Glove pub.
His wife Hannah b.1781 was a farmer and schoolmistress of the Dames School at Stannington.
I have four of their children's names but cannot find any record of the father of William Revitt their Grandfather.
The Revitt family are also connected to the Greaves, Beachells, Askey,Pease and Timmins families
I know other forummers with Revitt connections who have contributed to the Revill posting and I would like to ask them or anyone else if they could give me any help to find William's father.
Happy Days!

hennypenny 25-02-2007, 10:03 On the IGI there is a marriage of a William Revett to a Hannah Oates in 1806 at Ecclesfield Parish Church, and there are children named William, Joseph, George and Hannah being baptised to a couple with the names William and Hannah Revitt, at Stannington Presbyterian Chapel (This will be Underbank Chapel at Stannington).
There is a William Rivitt who is christened on 12 Dec 1779 at Upper Independent Presbyterian Chapel-Nc (Underbank Chapel), Sheffield, Yorkshire, England . His parents are Richard Rivitt and Hannah.
Between 1754-1837 all marriages had to be in the parish church, (except for Quakers or Jews) which would explain why they were christening their children at Underbank Chapel, but got married at Ecclesfield.
We have come across the Revitt name when researching other families in this area.
It should be possible to track this family back and verify online records by research in parish registers, property deeds and wills, utilising Sheffield Archives, Bradfield Archives, Sheffield Local Studies Library, the Borthwick Institute at York and West Yorkshire Archives at Wakefield.
We would be willing to undertake this research for a reasonable fee :)
Hi Hennypenny
I would like to thank you for your quick and informative response to my query here on the Sheffield Forum.
You did send me the right William that I was looking for.
The information about weddings in parish churches is going to be so useful.
I was unaware of this law.
Now I know why I have been unable to find the christenings.
Thank you for your offer of help.
I have several problems which I have been working on for some years so might well enlist your help when the frustration level becomes too much to cope with.
Once again thank you so much for your kind help and advice.
Happy Days!

Rivelin6 07-04-2007, 16:41 Hi Pop T,
I have just been doing some research for a friend whose ancestor married into the Revitt Family. John Gilman married Millicent Revitt. She was the daughter of George Revitt and she was born Oct 1829. If you want any more information about that side of the family just let me know.

Hi Rivelin
Thankyou for your offer of your professional help but as stated I am looking for the Revitts pre 1780's and I do not wish to pay for researching any family later than that.
Thanking you PopT
Rivelin6 08-04-2007, 08:43 Hi PopT,
Do you know you can can sometimes go back to the 1600's on Family Search ( the mormon site) I wasn't suggesting you pay for the information I'd already aquired. If you don't have access to that site I don't mind a quick look for you as I have an interest in the family.
Rivelin6 08-04-2007, 11:44 Hi Pop T,
Looking at the IGI you can get back to 1690 with the birth of William Revitt but it only gives his wife's name not his parents then.
hi pop t my fathers name is alan revill he lived around glaedless and surrounding areas in the 1960s 1970s,his fathers name was frank revill, they also lived in boston in lincolnshire.any good to you?
Hi Josh
Although I have read on the forum that the Revitt family and the Revill family are connected I have not found a connection as yet.
Thankyou for the info I will check it out if I do find a connection.
Happy Days!

Are you still looking for info on Revitts? I have details of a William Revitt marrying a Ruth Webster in 1714. My link is through the Barker family Joseph Barker married Maria, who was the daughter of Sarah (a Revitt born in 1811).
My family tree is traced back to Robert Revitt. Apparently the Revitt family were driven out of France approx 1683.
Let me know if I can help further.
Douglas J 21-01-2009, 22:12 I seem to remember the Revitt family was at the big house called Revell Grange on Rails rd or Bingley Rd at Stannington. i accept i may be completely wrong but it would also help establish a Revitt / Revell link which Popt mentioned.

Gday Pop, My great granmother is listed on my grandfathers birth certificate as Alice Greaves Beachell, formerly Revitt, I might have to get in touch with my nephews wife as she did our family tree.
On one of the 2 Stannington threads on the forum, there is a link to Stannington history & local people killed in the wars, you might find something there.
I have a vast quantity of information on the Revells (all spellings) as i have been researching this name since 1972.
I don't think there is any connection between Revett and Revell, apart from people misreading difficult handwriting. Revell Grange is a lovely old house, I have had the privilege of having a look round.
Rainyplace.
I have sent you a PM regarding mutual ancestry.

I've PM'd you too Redlegs, or should I say Cuz, :hihi: your Great Great Grandmother was my Great Grandmother, what a small world this is.
Minimo
I have noticed the old house with the large Quorn stones at the gates and it looks great.
I'd love to look around even if the Revells are not related to the Revitts.

430spider 29-12-2009, 22:24 Ask me nicely and I might say yes. I am the current owner of Revell Grange.
cdhewick 11-07-2010, 14:24 Hi popt,
I have just aquired 2 christening cups for DINAH REVITT born in Stannington on november 2nd 1869. I was doing some research on her when I came across your posting. I have been to the chapel you speak of and have photos and transcripts for all the revitt and goodison graves in the church yard, one of which is the William and Hannah you speak of. I can send them if you wish. Also I will be trying to trace any living relatives of the family to return, (for a fee ) the cups to their rightful family.
cdhewick 19-07-2010, 10:55 Hi Redlegs,
I wasnt aware I had sent you any pictures, I sent them to popt. I am not related to you in any way I am merely trying to trace relatives of Dinah Revitt to ask if they wish to buy back property which belongs in their family which I purchased at auction.
