Will turn this into a vote at a later stage but if everyone can post uyp there nominated TOP 5 Sheffield City Centre bars or pubs, we can see what an interesting and diverse mix of venues we get. Restricted to City Centre bars/pubs only, for this purpose within the confines of the main ring road, so not just S1 but a few hundred square metres of S10, 2,3, et al.

Bars and pubs only, not late bars performing night club functions, ie Flares, but other late bars will be fine as long as they dont turn into the equivalent of a night-club re dancing, etc. Reasons for choices will also be interesting, aspecially if unusual or off the beaten track places. Lets see what we get.....

MY TOP FIVE CURRENT SHEFFIELD CITY CENTRE PUBS
NOT IN ANY ORDER

THE NELSON (re-vamped and re-discovered rock bar which really kicks on a Saturday, superb, just a bit too small)
THE BATH HOTEL (off West Street, traditional and unmodernised, great real ale and does not leave a hole in your wallet....real change from the pulse of West Street)
THE SPORTSMAN (Cambridge STreet rock pub, unmodernised, good vibes, great change from the scurry of Division Street and refurbished bars)
FROG AND PARROT (Long time fave pub, great beers and a superb mix of students and locals)
THE BROWN BEAR (very much not known by many other than old Sheffield locals, a real time warp old style pub stuck in the 1970's....yet lively at the weekend)

Go for it....lets here everyone elses faves...

Wig and Pen, Campo Lane - I just like the odd building.
Bath Hotel - for the beer
All Bar One - no kids
Halcyon, Division Street - I don't know why I like it I just do
Sola, Behind the cathedral - Just a relaxing bar

I used to drink in the Brown Bear too, but recently it smells like a wet ashtray so I don't go anymore.

I has to be without a doubt the good old Yorkshire Grey.

I remember my dad taking me in there when I was a wee lad before the Game. Have many a good memories in there and seen many staff come and go.

It's a shame to see it in the sorry state it is at the mo with what I call Thnderbird 5 looming over it (The big white crane with 5 on it for some reason)

It's been the place of choice to drink during the day or before we hit the town for well over 3 years now. Every Friday from 7pm, Pint of Timmy in had, chilling out before we confront the hustle and bussle of further up town, and obviously the cheeky women

Can anybody recommend pubs for pool? Wouldnt mind heading down rylies near the portacottage down eccy road but dont know what i need to sign up. Do i need a current member with me for them allow me to sign up?

Also been looking for places that have Caffreys on tap, so far ive only seen it at the globe, anybody noticed it anywhere else?

The Yorkshire Grey has a couple of pool tables! As for Riley's, you don't need to bring a current member or anything, just turn up. Last time I renewed my membership (end of last year), it was £10 a year for adults, and £3 for students. The pool tables there are American 9 ball with massive pockets, though. Personally I don't like this, as I think it's too easy. There are no traditional pub pool tables.

Deano1889
16-10-2004, 07:28 PM
I think you can have an all day pass for £3 too. There's one standard English pool table which is at the other end of the bar in it's own room. We generally play on that after giving in at Snooker!

Wig & Pen - Very nice bar and the food smells fantastic.
Bia Hoi - Nice place to chill.
Revo - Even tho it has gone down hill since it opened.
S1 - Its just so unbelivable cheap.

Thats about it,still got a few boozers to check out. Going down the Three Tuns sometime next week i think.

If anyones wanting a place to pool you should check out Top Spot snooker club on attercliffe. The last time i went in they had 3 very good UK pubs pool tables. Only cost £2 a hour as well.

In my personal opinion my favourite bar has to be the Halcyon. The ambience is truly electrifying, where else can you sit till 1 AM sipping kir royals (champagne cocktails) listening to funkiest house tunes known to mankind, admiring the mint female bar staff! As soon as Nationwide sort out my second mortgage I will become a daily regular.

Do you agree?

Especially after the early closing crowd have staggered home.

Yes, the bar staff are fit, but to be honest I've always found the place souless and generic, which I attribute to the prettyboy/girl crowd (no offence intended). Places like this are ten-a-penny, only for some reason Halcyon is ridiculously overpriced for drinks. I like the idea of having nights where anyone can come and spin a few records, but there are so many places you can listen to funky house it's pointless really.

Classic Rock Bar is the best bar in sheffield as far as I am concerned. Second after that is Nelson.
The Classic Rock bar is fantastic because it has 2 seperated rooms so you can have a band or musiscian in one room and a totally different one in the other. I have played in both rooms, in total I've played about 10 times.
Drinks are cheap, they have fantastic Guinness and real Ales on. Even Vodka is a good price. The staff are all great. The music is rocktastic.

It's a wonderful place.

I love the Lescar! The whole underground messiness of it is quality. It really has become my local away from home now as I know so many people who drink there. In fact I will be sipping a froth or two there tonight.

Hmmmm, best bar though? I must admit that Sheffield really does lack quality bars. I prefer the Halcyon to the Forum, but it can be a bit soulless at times. I like Muse when it's not too busy. Has a really nice ambience to it.

You must have been battered!!

PROBE was on every saturday for about 3 years at the lescar - you might be getting it mixed up with the NTA night at the Vine which was the last fri of the month.

Probe could be a mad night - especially the night after Zogg with the room packed and people dancing on the seats. But Zogg moved from fri to sat and Dil who put it on went away travelling for a few months and it ground to a halt.

But for anyoen after some nostalgia theres a one off Probe on Sat 30 April at the Lescar

Way too pricey for the overall package I'm afraid. It seems that the so-called cool crowd have moved on to pastures new and this bar is now falling foul to the chav crowd that makes up the majority of Sheffield's city centre. Such potential, but disappointing.

I would like to second this, although The Dog is more of a pub than a bar. And it sells so much guinness that it is the best pint of guinness in sheffield.

Not sure if it's the same as it used to be but i used to go in The Bankers Draft quite a bit, easy to catch bus home for me from there

Apart from that i'd have to say the Red Deer, good selection of ale and The Washington.

The Devonshire Cat's not bad but it's a tad noisy late on for someone like me who is a bit mutton jeff, it's spacious though, just right for meets and such

So whats the difference between a bar and a pub?
Or am I just being stupid.
They all serve alcohol .
Only difference i can see is bars tend to be over priced and the beer tends to be sh*t,
I personally like the Sportsman (sad i know)
Alot of the people in the Halcyon and some of the other bars on west st and division st are just soooooooooooooooooooo rude and unfriendly

Have to agree with JayJay on this one. Every time I have been dragged into Halcyon, Forum et al I have always found majority of people in there a bit too much up their own a**e for my liking.
Apologies to anyone this offends but I tend to say it as I see it.
P.s Can someone please tell me the definition of a chav? Is it age specific or is anyone eligable?

The difference between a pub and a bar lies in what they serve (cask ales = pub, bottles only = bar) and the percentage of people who can be seated at any one time. Price per outfit and Volume of music can also help determine which your in. Also note that the closer to the city centre the more likely it is your in a bar.

The halcyon and the forum are not really the sort of places i'd care to remember, always seemed fun, but too busy and average to write home about.

Favorite pubs/bars in sheffield at the moment are the green room, the washington, the red lion, and the springvale

I went in that new Crystal bar the other week. Naturally, the drinks were very overpriced. In my opinion, it's simply another "trendy bar by numbers" (The mixture of decor themes took postmodernism to the extreme - it was like Kelham Island meeting the Far East). I quite enjoyed my solitary pint in there, but I probably won't be returning in the near future.

There's nothing wrong with these kinds of bar persay, but I don't like the fact that they are popping up left, right and centre. I think there is room for trendy bars like this, alternative bars like the Dove and Rainbow, commercial chains with low prices like Wetherspoons and good old-fashioned public houses that sell traditional ale.

We need an eccelectic mix of pubs and bars; something for everyone. As long as the pubs of Sheffield don't all become clones of each other, I will continue to enjoy visiting a wide selcetion of them. And getting drunk.

Ah, the self righteous rears it's head. A lot more people than listen to you spouting of about bars that have all the atmosphere of the moon I reckon.

Your opinions are as valid as that of a blind man trying on spectacles.

Since when does your opinion count for more than anyone elses?

As soon as Nationwide sort out my second mortgage I will become a daily regular.

Do you agree?

Sorry Fabio_Pinot, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I nearly fell off my chair when I read your description of the Halcion.

It's a decent enough bar, but 'truly electrifying'? I would say more generic and dull - the same as the majority of other bars in Sheffield. There's really nothing different or exciting about it at all.

I think Sheffield's bars are due a massive overhaul. I used to live in Northampton, which is a really ****ting little town down south with a generally poor social scene, but the bars were much better - loads of themed places. There was one that was done up like a medieval castle inside and the toilets are dungeons, and another with an enormous tropical fish tank in the centre of the bar with minature sharks swimming in it. Nottingham is similar, and I'm sure loads of other UK cities have good bars too.

But Sheffield? Ambient? Funky? Sorry but I beg to differ!

Sheffield is full of soulless bars like Halcyon and Crystal. Even student haunts like Lescar and Porter Cottage aren't all that either.

Unfortunately, more and more dull bars keep popping up throughout Sheffield, with very little to seperate them from the bar next door.

Sola bar is one of Sheffield's best bars, although it's quite hard to find!

Thanks Mr Halcyon! But it doesn't really though, does it now.

I'm not even sure there is a good bar in Sheffield. Sola, maybe, Crystal, perhaps.

Well said Green back. Sola's probably the best. But hey, we don't drink champagne cocktails do we?

At least we all know where to avoid the classy ooziest people.

personally, I can not tolerate any bar longer then 2 shots and a vodka and tonic, bars are meant to be hopped along, work your way down west street and that way you'll not get disappointed. As for pubs I think often your local is the best, friendly faces and no need for a taxi home.

Ruskins (opposite the Crucible & Lyceum) serves the best pint of Caffreys (IMO) in Sheffield.

It also happens to be my fav city centre bar, having not been out in "town" for about 3 years I discovered this place on a night out at the theatre. It's a great to have a city centre venue that caters for nice people, rather than the glut of bottle bars that have taken over in recent times.

I like to go somewhere where the music isn't so loud you can't even hear yourself shout! Though I do love good music and live bands it's nice to have it at a level where you can hear it but it isn't totally deafening.
