If you look right up to the top of the picture, the building to the right is what is now GAP barbiegirl80 23-02-2007, 10:02 Looks like somewhere just down from the Catherdral, over the new tram-tracks.. Looking onto Fargate.. LHarman 23-02-2007, 10:02 looks to me like its taken from Pinstone st, looking down towards Fargate, the shop on the corner on the right foreground could be the opticians opposite the sports shop that used to be Suggs. cgksheff 23-02-2007, 10:02 http://www.hedgerow.co.uk/hpl/images/17133-large.jpg LHarman 23-02-2007, 10:03 looking again, its definately looking up from High st. Sheffielder 23-02-2007, 10:07 Easy peasy that one Coles corner on the right looking up from High Street (possibly the Star building ?) Titian 23-02-2007, 10:12 Easy peasy that one Coles corner on the right looking up from High Street (possibly the Star building ?) Yup, look in the right hand corner of the photo.....it says Cole brothers purdyamos 23-02-2007, 10:15 The street at the far end is Pinstone Street, because it looks just the same today. TattyBear 23-02-2007, 10:17 I noticewd that cole brothers sign too! did it used to be where the hsbc bank is on the corner then? (or am I lost)? Plain Talker 23-02-2007, 10:24 I noticewd that cole brothers sign too! did it used to be where the hsbc bank is on the corner then? (or am I lost)? that's right, tattybear, that corner is still referred to as "coles corner", there's a plaque on the wall near the cafe next door to the bank, commemmorating it. "coles " moved to their Barkers pool site in the early 1960's, they became part of the John Lewis chain in about 1964, but were still referred to as "coles" even up to (and beyond) the "official" name-change about 4 yrs ago to "JL" Rich 23-02-2007, 10:26 My Mum worked at Cole's in the early 70s so I know it's been open donkey's years. TattyBear 23-02-2007, 11:19 Cool, thanks guys n gals x katkin 23-02-2007, 12:04 http://www.hedgerow.co.uk/hpl/images/17133-large.jpg Yup - I agree katkin 23-02-2007, 12:04 that's right, tattybear, that corner is still referred to as "coles corner", there's a plaque on the wall near the cafe next door to the bank, commemmorating it. If you look on the wall just before you go into HSBC bank you will see a plaque telling you. Strix 23-02-2007, 12:30 if the view looks ever so slightly difficult to identify, isn't that due to a widening project? the buildings all down the right hand side of the picture are all modern ones in the scene today ;) http://www.lucas-digital.com/images/sheffield/sheffield_fargate_bottom.jpg heeleygirl 23-02-2007, 12:31 Looks to me as thought this picture was taken from the end of York Street the building you can just see on bottom right is what was known as Coles Corner and the trams are all in line on Fargate. saxon51 23-02-2007, 15:35 Here's an interesting task for you TattyBear, take a walk up Fargate and see if you can compare the rooflines on the left. TattyBear 23-02-2007, 17:57 Hi Saxon, I just did, I went down today this afternoon and with my partner i tried figuring out what was what from all different old pics. Quite fun actually. :) lazarus 23-02-2007, 18:21 Where abouts on fargate (1930) is this, trying to work out the angle it was taken and the buildings? http://www.firthparkgrammarschool.co.uk/sheffield07.htm The building on the right is Cole Brothers, you can see part of the name on the building itself. So looks as if it was taken from just across the road probably from Pawson and Brailsfords old building on the corner of East parade and High St. Ipso facto the old and original Coles Corner. cgksheff 23-02-2007, 18:27 .......... Ipso facto .......... Quod erat demonstrandum! A long time ago! Yellowrose 23-02-2007, 21:26 Thank you for the link to the lovely photos, original poster, I really enjoyed them. The ones of the hospitals were particularly interesting. As an auxiliary nurse I worked at the Royal Hospital and one of the photos showed the corner office where I remember having my interview. I loved the Royal, I remember Bernard Wake ward, but I was on Littlewood. As student nurse I worked at the Royal Infirmary and hated it ... as soon as I saw the pictures I shuddered ... the cockroaches! Nigel Womersle 23-02-2007, 21:27 Easy peasy that one Coles corner on the right looking up from High Street (possibly the Star building ?) Absolutely spot on!! I remember the policeman standing on the platform in the middle of the road, directing the traffic. *_ash_* 24-02-2007, 01:11 Thank you for the link to the lovely photos, original poster, I really enjoyed them. I loved the Royal Criminal that it's demolished, it was a beaut building. Did it burn down? lazarus 24-02-2007, 13:09 Tell me about Pawson and Brailsfords. I have two 19th century quack magneto machines for electrocuting / curing patients of 'nervous diseases'. Both have labels printed by Pawson and Brailsfords. Im afraid thats all Pawson & Brailsford did -- print -- labels, leaflets, books in fact everything that was printable they did it and they must have been very successful because of the size of their premises that are still there on the corner of High St and East Parade. |
