in my local neighbourhood we have a family who own a dog but who don't bother taking him for walks. the issue i have with this is that the dog uses the pavement in front of the house as a toilet. everyday without exception the pavement is littered with more piles of doogie doo. i have to dodge the stuff which is easy by day but much harder in the dark. i am totally fed up with having to clean the dirt from my kids shoes because they haven't managed to avoid the stuff.

my dilema is what to do about it, the way i see it i have several different options.

1. give the dog a good kicking when i next see it. however im not into animal cruelty so i will give this a miss.

2. knock on the door and ask nicely if they can stop their dog from fouling the footpath.

3. knock on the door and threaten them if it carries on i will report them to the council.

4. report them to the environmental department of the city council.

5. get a pair of disposable gloves and a tesco carrier and post the dog dirt back through their letterbox. they might then get the message.

which method would you choose if this was happenning in your area?.

Id go with option 2. You have nothing to loose by talking to them? If that fails,id go with a variation of option 5.Rather than post it,simply leave the poo on their property?
Poor dog. Way too many people get a dog, then never exercise them. This,to me,is abuse. :(

option 5 every time!

Poor dog :( .

I'd go for the polite but firm approach. Discuss it with them. If you don't have any joy doing that, then report them to the appropriate council department. Not sure how it works in Sheffield, but where I am, there are contact details on the dog poo bins.

I wouldn't go for option 5. You don't want to antagonize them and risk them shoving the dog poo back through your letter box, or taking it out on the poor dog.

I would go for no 5 as well, see how they like it,but I feel for the poor doggy not getting any excercise, some people dont deserve a animal.

Option 5 with slight variation.
1.Paper bag full of s**t left on doorstep after being set on fire.
2.Ring doorbell.
3.RUN.
Automatic reaction is to stamp on the fire to put it out.:hihi:
Then sit back thinking its not you cleaning the shoes this time!!

Yeah, go talk to em in the first instance IMHO, but if they don't appreciate you going round just walk away don't let em wind you up. The sort of people who don't exercise and care for their own dog aren't usually the sort of people who you can have a reasoned conversation with - but you should try anyway. I take it that as the dog does it's doo doo in the street it is left to roam most of the day?

I'd go for option 6.

Give the dog some nice rich cooked beef & liver; sure to upset it's guts & then sit back while it squits all round their house :hihi:

thanks everyone for your suggestions they made me laugh!. the street in question is not in hilllsborough it is in shefffield 5. i am quite annoyed about the situation. i don't own any furry animals due to being allergic to them but it is not fair on the dog. every dog should be cared for and taken on regular walks. the dog owners can't fail to realise that the dog is crapping on the path in front of their house so maybe they don't give a sh*t (excuse the pun).

Option 4. report them to the environmental department of the city council.

I am such a coward, it avoids a confrontation and they will never know its you who has reported them. You can then sit back and enjoy the show.

Option 1 = Its not the dogs fault it has to poo so kicking it is certainly not an option

Option 3 = I'd go with this one personally

Let us know how you get on!!

I get this several times a week, the grass verge i can cope with and expect it, but on the footpath and more to the point my garden path is no joke.
I don't mind cleaning up the poo of my own dogs but there is something infinately worse about someone else's, plus it has to be a big dog judging by the size of the pile :gag: , the thought that the dog might be being watched doing this on my path by its owner makes me soooo mad, if i ever find out who it is there will be bother!

I'd go and talk to them in the first instance, if they get rude (which, in my experience, some do) then tell them you'll contact the council.

If it continues, inform the council/environmental health - dog poo is incredibly dangerous to young children who may fall on it and then rub their eyes, it can cause blindness. If they get the dog taken off them after warnings, all the better in my opinion, there is no excuse for having a dog and not walking it regularly. ALL dogs need exercise, and this is cruelty.

If they can't be bothered to clear it up I very much doubt they will be the sort of person who will listen to a polite word! Go with option 5, chuck it at their house and wipe it on their door handles!

Report them to the Council - it's supposed to be a fine-able offence - and the RSPCA, whilst you're at it- if they can't be bothered to even exercise their dog they cant be fit to own it. There's a new Animal Welfare Act supposed to be coming in this year, if it hasnt already - and that puts a duty of care on dog owners to make sure their dogs can 'exhibit normal behaviour patterns in addition to the dog's physical needs' that includes making sure they get regular exercise.

There's really no excuse for it- a responsible dog owner will always clear up after their dog - it really naffs me off as we have similar problems near where I live - and some people automatically assume I am a culprit just because I own a dog - I ALWAYS carry dog poo bags and I ALWAYS clear up after my dog - it's no big deal, takes seconds to do it.

it's easier to report them, which as a dog owner i would do.
several reasons not to confront them
1. blazing row
2.smack on the nose - u or them
3. when confrontation fails & u ring the council - they'll know it's you.

Why not get some bags of sand and every time there is a fresh pile, cover it with a very thick layer of sand? This will stop it getting on your shoes and it will also draw attention to the problem pretty quickly.

Near city farm, they used to ring dog turds with big rings of brightly coloured chalk or paint.

Exactly...Last year a bloke a few roads away from me got fed up with the neighbours dog crapping on his path so he went round and kindly asked the neighbour if he could do something about it. The neighbour did something about it...he started by asking the bloke to wait at the door for a minute. He then emerged from the house with a baseball bat and broke this poor fellas jawbone, the orbit around his eye, fractured his skull and almost destroyed his left wrist. Now there are no complaints about dog crap....problem sorted

Yes the street I live on seems to have loads of dog poo - but only recently. I have a dog and always clear it's business up, which makes me want to be sick but it's the only right thing to do and then some scruffer let their dog poo right at the end of our drive!! These people really annoy me, if you can't be bothered to take on all the responsibilities of having a dog - don't have one!!

If its happening as regularly as you say, I think you would be wasting your time adopting the softly softly approach with these people.

I would go and report them to the environmental department as soon as possible as its not acceptable and there is no excuse for it. If you are going to own a dog then you should accept the responsibility for cleaning up after it.

I was walking my dog in Bank Wood this morning when I came upon a fellow dog owner who's dog had left one on a clay bank above the stream.
Bending down to get his bag around it the poor soul lost his footing and slid down the bank into the stream wiping up the poo with his jacket on the way.
I'm not sure whether that classes as clearing up after your dog, but it ranks 11 out of 10 for effort if not style.

There's someone walking a big dog after dark here in Woodseats and I'd love to catch them as there's poo everywhere and it's disgusting...

Totally fed up of it!

Same around here.. The council have even spray painted the path every few feet to remind people not to let their animals mess everywhere.

Was in Starbucks this morning on the Fargate and watched from a far while a kid (who really should have been in school) let his dog relieve itself. The kid looked around and then walked away without picking up the mess. :/

there is absolutely no excuse for leaving your dog muck, I totally agree, Katkin.

Even if I don't have my poochie with me, I've still got wodges of her empty scoopy-bags with me- it's just force of habit.

If I can clean up after my dog when I am a wheelchair user, there's no reason why anyone else cannot do the same.

I have a few ideas about curing the dirty so-and-sos who let their dogs foul... one of them includes making them do community service... Dog poo patrol, cleaning up the streets.

The other idea would include an unpleasant way of clearing their dog's muck up, which didn'y involve scoopy bags... Nuff said! I'll leave that Idea there.
